If you learn to read not by deciphering each word, but by seeing words in their entirey, it explains why it's easy to 'detect' a word simply by the first and last letters and by the size of the word. It's all about visual recognitation.

Some of us have been doing it for decades [:D] .

Aneirin -> RE: For the bad spellers here........ (2/21/2008 4:45:19 PM)

Yes, the trick is to just read what is written, start analysing and you find you can't read it straight away.

See it as it is, think about it and it all goes wrong.

For years I just thought I was weird as I could read bad grammar, upside down writing and mirror image writing without a problem.

Rescue vehicles with ' ecnalubma ' or ' erif ' written on the hood, I always used to wonder why it was written backwards. I was told, so people could understand what it said by looking through their rear view mirrors. That confused me, as I could read it anyway if it were not written backwards and though everyone else could.

You know, I never completely understood the need label the vehicles like that.  You would think that the lights and sirens would be a good enough indicator for people to pull over out of the way.

it's for the people who have their oversized stereos blasting so loudly that everyone in a 5 miles radius hears it...

Huh? wha'd you say?

slaveboyforyou -> RE: For the bad spellers here........ (2/21/2008 7:12:12 PM)

I understand hearing problems.  That's what the bright lights on top of the vehicles are for.  Hell those strobe light bars that the state police use here damn near blind you.  That covers the hearing impaired and the lovers of loud music.  Now it doesn't cover the blind and deaf, but I hope they're not out driving.  Of course that wouldn't surprise me.

Which is why proofreaders will always have jobs.

Seriously - my screen reader almost blew a gasket. it thought that was a foreign language or something, but it gamely tried to read it anyway.

That's one reason i know when I've typed something  incorrectly: my reader reads back a strange word - not what I thought I'd typed.
