Mercnbeth -> TRUE or FALSE Test (9/19/2005 10:09:48 AM)

Can you guess which of the following are true and which are false?

1. Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient at waking you up in the morning.

2 Alfred Hitchcock didn't have a belly button.

3. A pack-a-day smoker will lose approximately 2 teeth every 10 years.

4. People do not get sick from cold weather; it's from being indoors a lot more.

5. When you sneeze, all bodily functions stop, even your heart!

6. Only 7 percent of the population are lefties.

7. Forty people are sent to the hospital for dog bites every minute.

8. Babies are born without kneecaps. They don't appear until they are 2-6 years old.

9. The average person over 50 will have spent 5 years waiting in lines.

10. The toothbrush was invented in 1498.

11. The average housefly lives for one month.

12. 40,000 Americans are injured by toilets each year.

13. A coat hanger is 44 inches long when straightened.

14. The average computer user blinks 7 times a minute.

15. Your feet are bigger in the afternoon than any other time of day.

16. Most of us have eaten a spider in our sleep.

17. The REAL reason ostriches stick their head in the sand is to search for water.

18. The only two animals that can see behind themselves without turning their heads are the rabbit and the parrot.

19. John Travolta turned down the starring roles in "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Tootsie."

20. Michael Jackson owns the rights to the South Carolina State anthem.

21. In most television commercials advertising milk, a mixture of white paint and a little thinner is used in place of the milk.

22. Prince Charles and Prince William NEVER travel on the same airplane, just in case there is a crash.

23. The first Harley Davidson motorcycle built in 1903 used a tomato can for a carburetor.

24. Most hospitals make money by selling the umbilical cords cut from women who give birth. They are used in vein transplant surgery.

25. Humphrey Bogart was related to Princess Diana. They were 7th cousins.

26. If coloring weren't added to Coca-Cola, it would be green.

They are all TRUE.... Now go back and think about #16!!! YUMMMMMYYY

I received this today in email and thought it interesting. But I thought #5 regarding the sneeze, was disproved.

frenchpet -> RE: TRUE or FALSE Test (9/19/2005 11:04:39 AM)

I'd say most could be true except for :

2- That would imply Hitchock didn't have a mother.

9-That would be 2.5 hours every day. I guess only people who have lived post war restrictions, or soviet people at the fall of USSR know what waiting 2.5 hours everyday means.

10- Many arabic people still use a plant that takes the form of a tooth brush to clean their teeth. This plant was used by Muhammad, the prophet of the muslims. But if you mean boar silk planted in a piece of wood, that could be true.

16-yuck... but tiny ones could get caught in a sleeper's mouth I guess.

17-I don't think they ever do

18-spiders have eight eyes, all around their head. Well none is technically behind them, but other animals have their eyes on antennas (snails), and I would think chameleons can see behind. Finally, I doubt parrots would have an advantage over all other birds.

19 & 20 : I have no idea, so I'd say true.

25 can certainly be true : Any person has hundreds or thousands of seventh cousins (that is, if I understand it well).

26 : The urban legend of the green coke is an old one.

... You mean you don't have the answers ! dammit !

edited to add the comment about Muhammad (which makes toothbrushes much older than 1498)... but I tend to think ancient Greeks would also brush their teeth.

Q

frenchpet -> RE: TRUE or FALSE Test (9/19/2005 11:23:44 AM)

Forgot one :

15- I think feet are bigger in the evening...

OK now may I google that ? Or are you going to give the correct answers ?

French pet,
I've been accused of it, but I've never represented that I have "ALL" the answers! [:D]

I received this, and figured I'd share, assuming that the knowledgeable people from CM would have the facts.

I didn't think to check the "urban legends" site to verify some of these. I remember reading the Alfred Hitchcock think before, but forget the story. If I have the time I'll do some surfing and post the findings.

False. It was made 'invisable' after surgery he had.

Anyone, who has had children and sneezed shortly after - knows this isnt true.

False. They are born with them, but they do not calcify.

False

He owns beatles song rights.

I am sure all the others are false also. I just answered the ones I know. (Ostrich one is false also) But I am sure google will answer ....

Peace and Love.

frenchpet -> RE: TRUE or FALSE Test (9/19/2005 3:23:16 PM)

googled a bit (" john travolta turned down tootsie"), looks like it's a popular list of statements ;).

ORIGINAL: dark~angel

I don't get what you mean. The statement as I understood it was that during the sneeze, the heart would stop beating, your brain would stop thinking etc...
But it's the kind of statements that don't make much sense, a bit like "after taking acid 2 (4,5,6...) times, you are legally insane. "legally insane" doesn't mean a thing.

quote:

6. Only 7 percent of the population are lefties.

False

I guess "lefties" here stands for "left-handed"... it's probably close to the truth. I guess "the population" stands for the american population, because it certainly varies from one country to the other.

quote:

False. They are born with them, but they do not calcify.

interesting. That makes the statement almost true :)...

quote:

13. A coat hanger is 44 inches long when straightened.

probably the length of the standard metal hanger... I'd never bother checking that !

quote:

19. John Travolta turned down the starring roles in "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Tootsie."

False

He was probably too young for Tootsie... but I don't think that's something I'd ask him if I meet him ! Actors turn down offers every day.

quote:

20. Michael Jackson owns the rights to the South Carolina State anthem.

He owns beatles song rights.

But that doesn't mean he doesn't also own other rights... while I'm at anthems, a funny thing is that the guy who wrote the national anthem of USSR (lyrics have had different versions, especially that Stalin was removed of the lyrics shortly after his death) was asked to write the lyrics for the Russian anthem, after the fall of the USSR.

quote:

I am sure all the others are false also. I just answered the ones I know. (Ostrich one is false also) But I am sure google will answer ....

I'm not positive concerning TV ads, but for ads to be published in magazines, milk is replaced by something else. So that's one that is very likely to be true.
But yeah, 24 really sounds like the typical urban legend designed to gross out people. So does 16... but given the number of times I've been biten by spiders during my sleep, I wouldn't be very surprised.

Concerning the biting dogs, that would make a bit more than 20 million people sent to hospital every year. That would be around a dog or two out of ten biting someone every year. Note that most dog bites aren't worth going to the hospital, but I'd bet that lots of people would go to the hospital if a dog bites them even slightly.

Maybe someone knows about 4 ?

Lordandmaster -> RE: TRUE or FALSE Test (9/19/2005 3:43:09 PM)

No. 4 is worded so poorly as to be unintelligible. What does "sick" mean? If it means "acquiring an infectious disease," then people don't get sick from cold weather OR from being indoors. They get sick from infectious organisms (bacteria and viri). But there are many kinds of "sickness" that are not infectious at all.

Basically, the whole question is just stupid.

greenie -> RE: TRUE or FALSE Test (9/20/2005 10:53:59 AM)

3 has got to be false! i've been smoking for 17 years and haven't lost any teeth yet! And none of my teeth are rotting either.

4 would be true if the question was meant that people get sick from BEING indoors more often, that's why so many kids get sick in fall and winter...they're indoors more often because of bad weather and so the germs are getting spread from one child to another because of the close contact.

5 would be false. i think what Dark Angel meant is that after having a baby the bladder is weak and when a you sneeze it cause the bladder to not be able to contain itself.

11 i thought that houseflys only live about 3 days but i'm not sure.

16 i'd believe that

This is a false statement - and quite far off the 7 percent mark. It is too difficult to gather percentage information on lefthandedness as (technically) studies have only been done on people who claim they are left handed - and most left hands are ambidextrious anyway in one way or another. But if you do want to take statistics, then the general view is 1 in 10 people are lefthanded (in some way) - in polls taken the figure came in 12-30% dependant on the people involved (which country they resided) with more boys being left handed than girls. My son is left handed - well, technically he is 'semi Cross Lateral', I made sure I know what there is to know to assist him. The population of 'lefthandedness' is on the increase.... they will take over the world one day![;)]

I made the statement with a smile....[:D]. Bodily functions go out of the window when you have a child - bruised bladders lead to sneezing with ones legs crossed[;)]...
Sneezing and bodily functions stopping is false - some women can suffer from bladder weakness and peeing is a bodily function.
That said, brain function stopping - technically sneezing itself is a bodily function anyway - so its a bit of an oxymoron. The myth comes from the reason people say 'bless you' or 'god bless you'... because it was to help your soul to heaven because the heart stopped. A sneeze is also shorter in length of time than a single heartbeat so it cant be measured anyway in that way. However when you sneeze, you can loose eyeballs. They can pop out. Coughing is also a way to lose the eye ball from inside the socket. (But they will still be attached, just dangling...lol)

Peace and Love

frenchpet -> RE: TRUE or FALSE Test (9/21/2005 3:31:17 PM)

Hello angel,

Good luck with your son, it's still a right-handed's world : even a can opener is easier to use for a right-handed person, except if you bought it at a shop for left handed people. Anyway, I guess the reason why the proportion of left handed people is increasing is that not so long ago, the left side used to be the bad side, after all Jesus is at the right side of the Father... Many people over 50 or even just 40 were forced to use their right hand when they learnt to write, and actually some teachers still force their pupils to write with the right hand because they don't know how to write with the left hand. (Maybe left handed people should all do like Michelangelo, it would be easier for them ;) ).

Anyway... I got what you meant :). I agree, the statement didn't make much sense, but yes, if you sneeze really hard with your mouth shut, pinching your nose and your fingers in your ears, your eyes will pop out, for sure. I think it happened to the great philosopher Calvin.
I think people were afraid that their soul might escape, which is why they "had to" make the cross sign (or say "bless you", "Jesus", or whatever) to prevent that. Before that, it was caused by gods, and was religiously respected (Cf. Xenophon).

Oh, and the word "sinister" means left, in latin.

Yes, You are quite right - people are more accepting of left handedness now - and there is alot more help - teachers now encourage left handed writing rather than forcing children to alter.

As for the old thoughts on being the bad side Re: Jesus being on the right side of the Father - I always view it that if Jesus is on His right, He must be holding Gods hand with His left... bwahhhhhh - Jesus was a leftie![:D]

Don't worry, it doesn't happen very often and it's quite benign : All you have to do is push them back in (with clean hands !), nothing to worry about.

DesertRat -> RE: TRUE or FALSE Test (9/21/2005 4:14:13 PM)

I believe #5. In fact, I believe that if you sneeze, burp, and fart at the same time, you will die!! I read that a long time ago in the "True Facts" section of the National Lampoon. They couldn't print it if it weren't true, right? Right?

Also, the thing about Michael Jackson is probably true. He does own (or at one time owned) the rights to "On Wisconsin". Maybe the U of Michigan fight song, too.

This is important stuff, dammit.

Bob

Actually we have a saying that says "fool me once..." no, sorry, not this one, it's "Whoever doesn't burp nor fart is doomed to explosion". And I believe it's true, because well, what purpose would have burps and farts otherwise ? Ah !

i hate to nitpick.. but (i'm almost positive about this - and i intend to look this up inna moment)... loss of bladder control is actual kind of "evidence" to the contrary. Peeing is a "relaxation" of bodily function. Meaning, if you have a full bladder and you die, after you're dead your bladder can still empty. The bladder wants to empty, control (aware - alert - bodily functioning) is needed to keep "urine in" ... urine coming out (when one doesn't mean for it too) actually shows the body has "stopped" or "relaxed" it's ability to function...

That said... i don't believe that when you sneeze "all body functions stop"... though it would be interesting to do brain scans on people while they are sneezing to see if indeed the brian ceases activity for the few moments a sneeze lasts.

I know - it was meant as a funny.
But as I said before - sneazing is a bodily function. So is coughing, burping, heart beats and anything that the body does. So the actual statement it is an oxymoron in itself. Because to sneeze, you must sneeze and if you didnt sneeze then the sneeze wouldnt occur so you wouldnt be sneezing(urgh - monty python moment there.....[;)])... plus the fact that a sneeze is faster than a heartbeat (medical evidence) and so to state all functions would cease is impossible to determine because it cannot be tested.

Actually - the statement is wrong - as Demon just informed me - because blinking is a bodily function - and you try sneezing with your eyes open! Lol... sorry pinkie - back to those eyeballs popping again...[:D]

'Nuff said.

Why don't you all just pass it onto snopes with your evidence and research. It will be labeled as spam once more.

I know it as spam...over the years I cannot count how many times it has arrived in my inbox.
