Hey there- anyone know how to care for an under-the-tounge injury? It hurts and I don't know what to do... it was an accident...

I would have to say it depends on how serous it is if you just ripped the skin a little let it go unless it gets infected, it will hurt for awhile

Well, it was bad enough for about a teaspoonful of bloo to drip onto the carpet. I didn't feel it at first, so that's how i knew something was wrong. Infection is what i am afraid of- but what can be used in the mouth but mouthwash- or should that really do the trick for just about anything?

Under the tongue? Ouch!

Anyway, mouth injurys heal very quickly. Use mouthwash, or if you want dilute some Hydrogen Peroxide and use it as a mouthwash. Fizzy though.

I've had my tongue pierced a grand total of 5 times.. I think? It never takes more than a few days to heal up. Don't stress about it, your mouth is very well equipped to fight off infections.

A teaspoon of blood is minor for a tongue injury. Tongues bleed like nothing you can imagine. They don't sew them up, obviously you can't bandage it. Just take a nonaspirin pain reliever and maybe put an ice cube on the spot.  It will be sore for a couple of days.

Damned typos.

I have injured my tongue a few times before.  Ice on the injured spot helps.  Also rinsing with salt water helps

WHOA!!!  You're getting some BAD info here (no offense to anyone)............mouthwash with alcohol in it/hydrogen peroxide WILL kill bad bacteria, but they WILL also kill the healthy cells your body needs to heal a wound!!!
I'd avoid putting anything on it, suck on ice/drink slushees, take ibuprofen if there's swelling......and avoid drinking/smoking.

What about a sea salt rinse? dilute sea salt in water, swish it around for about a minute...

that was what I used when I had my tongue pierced.. healed up just fine :) (well didnt do much for the talking funny for a few days..LOL)

I don't think I would gargle with peroxide.

This is one of those cases here it would do no good to go to a doctor, unless it keeps up. Give it time though, blood can't clot there really well.

Thing about doctors, I don't recommend them but sometimes they are necessary. If your bleeding hasn't subsided in a week or two try to see an oral surgeon right off the bat, you don't need a dentist.

I don't recommend pain killers, but if you really can't stand it there are topical ones which would be the better choice. Flooding your whole body with a painkiller for pain that is so localized, I believe, is not the best idea. What about Oragel or something like that ?

as said previously, don't use hydrogen peroxide. It is great for cleaning a new injury but after that it destroys new cell growth. Try lukewarm tea...Lipton or whatever. It is a holistic remedy that even dentists recommend. Also, avoid drinking from a straw. The sucking can easily dislodge the clot that has stopped the bloodflow.

(edited) if you try the tea it should be plain...no sweetners, lemon, cream, booze...etc.

Did you rip the little membrane at the bottom of the tongue while brushing your teeth? i did that years ago and it scared the heck out of me... Healed up fine with no particular care, though, and i can stick my tongue out further now
