I have just acquired this, it is about 34 inch long, slightly curved, 1 in X 1/2 in at the base, pointed at the tip, and made only a few years ago from a dried and cured pigs penis, in Denmark. I tried it out on a 'keen volunteer' yesterday and it had a most salutary effect, more memorable even than a heavy cane, of a dramatic sort I have really only seen with from a single-tail whip before. But Googling around I can't find much history or background about it; though there is a fair bit about bull's pizzle whips. Can anybody tell me anything more?

It would be a sjambok, regardless of 'donor' species wouldn't it?

My understanding of a 'Sjambok' is that it is a whip about a yard long meant for striking not cracking. My information is that it may be a pizzle whip, it may be any kind of leather, braided or twisted, with or without a wooden core. But it is intended for striking, not cracking; whether it is used by the police in riots or 'interviewing' suspects, or herding animals. The key difference is that it is for hitting them with, not cracking in the air to fighten them. I say that because I have imported hand-made single-tail whips from South Africa. I was offered several very different kinds of whips, all called 'Sjamboks', and the only thing they had in common was as above. What distinguished them from other single-tail whips was that they could not be 'cracked'. Indeed my supplier told me that if you took a braided sjambok and tried to crack it, you'd split it apart. So I did not buy any because I could see customers trying to do just that and demanding a replacement afterwards.

As far as the Sjambok goes, it didn't see wide spread use until this decade, tends to be around 3 to 5 feet long, and is made usually from rolled up cured rhino hide. Though the South African police started using plastic versions for crowd control. The Sjambok has more of a thuddy use, like a police baton, though because of its length it can also get in some mild whipping action. Rhino hide is very dense, and it can give heavy bruises with very little swing, so it can be a very intense instrument to use on a sub. The plastic versions are lighter, and can be a little less intense. Pizzles are older, being used as far back as the 18th century as far as I can tell. They were used mostly to punish slaves in africa and europe. Pizzles were easy to make obviously and replace when worn out. Pizzles were also used in shorter lengths in a diciplinarian capacity for wayward children in europe, and I am glad I grew up in america. Pizzles are still considered a whip, because they are just dried leather, which is basically what a whip is. Aparently they are still common in europe as tourist gifts, hehe. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, the Pizzle is in fact made from the cured penis of a bull, donkey, or in your case, a pig. It is stretched out as it is dried to get the length, and wrapped with other pieces of lether to give it stability.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no specific history of the pig pizzle. The bull pizzle is a noted thing, since it was long enough to be used as a horse-whip; riding on horseback, you could still deliver a stinging rebuke to a horse's flank. So everyone who had a horse would also have a bull's pizzle hanging on the wall, much as we have ladles and wooden spoons and potholders hanging in our kitchens: useful, everyday objects. Here's Falstaff in Henry IV: "'Sblood, you starveling, you elf-skin, you dried neat's tongue, you bull's pizzle, you stock-fish!" In Robert Coover's book Spanking the Maid, the maid misplaces the master's pizzle, and this is a metaphor for a loss of order, a loss of virility and power. I finally managed to pick one up, at last year's Thunder in the Mountains; I was expecting its effect would be due to its gruesomeness and sympathetic magic. It took me by surprise to learn that it hurts like a mofo.

This one isn't wrapped, it does bend a bit, like a Dragon cane, mine is just as it came - (no pun intended, but it is mildly amusing ...). The South African police have been using the sjambok for at least a century, (I recall many reports of its used in the Apartheid era), and Dutch and Boer slave overseers (and then 'agricultural worker supervisors) for much longer. I have a twisted rhino hide one, sadly now too dried and delicate for use; but my understanding is that the name applies to the usage, not the type, so any 3-5 ft long whip that is semi-rigid, sturdy, 'thuddy' and used for actually striking a person or animal - rather than most bullwhip, signal and similar type whips which are used to crack above or behind an animal to persuade it to move by threat not actual impact. quote: ORIGINAL: Darkfeather Oh yeah, the Pizzle is in fact made from the cured penis of a bull, donkey, or in your case, a pig. Yes, I meant century instead of decade, hehe. But the sjambok was indeed a specialised instrument created to punish slaves. It was originally made out of wood in indonesia I believe, adapted to hide when brought to africa. I used to know the origin of the word, but it escapes me at the moment, hehe
