A Quebec man may face criminal charges after a woman died while they were having sadomasochistic sex.
Josée-Julie Maltais, 39, died Saturday night in a home in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville on Montreal's South Shore, police said.
She went into cardiac arrest while engaging in "out of the ordinary" sexual practices using "very particular" accessories, said Longueuil police agent Martin Simard.
When police arrived at the residence on Sommet-Trinité Street, the man was trying to resuscitae Maltais, but she died, Simard said.
Police found torture devices in the homes, but would not give specifics.
The man was arrested and questioned but released without charge, police said.
Investigators are waiting for the autopsy report to determine if he'll be charged with criminal negligence causing death.

Not the most dignified way to die either... but hey. Shit happens. Hopefully, she had a smile on her face.

It seems odd for a 39-year-old woman to die that way unless she had a history of cardiac problems, took a serious impact to the chest, or some electrical play went horribly wrong...

I'd be quite interested to know exactly what "devices" they found at the house.  I mean jeez, either one of the aforementioned circumstances apply, or the guy's a demon in the sack.

Here's another story about a Quebecer and kinky sex that went awry. This one escaped a close call.

Victim of near-fatal sex play at bondage club doesn't remember incident

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

Tuesday, February 12th 2008, 4:00 AM

A retired math teacher from Quebec survived near-fatal sex play at a midtown bondage club but couldn't tell investigators how he was injured, law enforcement sources said Monday.

The 64-year-old thrill-seeker had been found turning blue, hanging in a dungeon room at the Nutcracker Suite on E. 33rd St. Friday morning.

Dressed in a dog collar and a pair of women's high heel shoes, the victim had paid staff at the upscale S&M club $100 an hour to check on him every hour.

"He comes down to visit once in a while," his unsuspecting wife said when reached in Quebec.

The Daily News is withholding the victim's name.

She said she had been told her husband had been found "unconscious on one of the streets."

But, it's not just the Quebecers who are having problems with living a kinky life.

York County Man Accused of Sex Electrocution of Wife
posted 4:21 pm Fri January 25, 2008 - York, PA (AP)

Police say a 29-year-old York County woman is dead after her husband apparently shocked her with an electric cord to stimulate her during sex. Officials say 37-year-old Toby Taylor was jailed Thursday in lieu of $100,000 bail on involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment charges.

Authorities say Kirsten Taylor was found unconscious Wednesday night at their Lower Windsor Township home. She was taken to York Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Deadly Sex

A woman died during a night of "bizarre sex" in which her husband used an electrical cord to stimulate her, but ended up shocking her, police said.
Kirsten Taylor, 29, was found unconscious Wednesday night at the couple's Lower Windsor Township home. She was taken to York Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Toby Taylor first said his wife was shocked by a hair dryer, according to a police affidavit. But when burns were found on her body, police said Taylor told them he had clipped an electrical cord to his wife and plugged it into a power strip, which he then turned on and off.

He told authorities the couple had used the technique before.

Taylor, 37, was jailed Thursday in lieu of $100,000 bail on involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment charges. He did not have a lawyer at his arraignment and no lawyer had been entered in his court file as of Friday.

The Globe and Mail-

I found this article in the newspaper today is an opinion of a Sex therapist of what happened in Quebec.. I think it's interesting...

They tie each other up, dabble in role-playing and experiment with whips, handcuffs and nipple clamps to experience the kind of turn-on most people achieve through kissing and racy lingerie.
Sadomasochists use a variety of activities, props and even torture-like devices to inflict consensual physical or psychological pain on each other to experience pleasure that is usually sexual in nature.
Although S&M has long been considered a deviant or underground form of sexual behaviour, statistics have shown that up to 10 per cent of the North American population has experimented with some form of it.
In recent years, sex clubs, for-hire dominatrixes and fetish shops that cater to the kinky pain-and-pleasure set have popped up across Canada.
But the death in Quebec last Saturday of a 39-year-old woman who suffered cardiac arrest during a reported S&M session has shaken the sadomasochist community and raised questions over when bondage, discipline, dominance and submission cross the line to become criminal behaviour.
"If the thrill is the risk, if that's part of what's exciting to you, then you're taking a risk. Whenever you take a risk, it doesn't always work out," said Sandra Byers, a sex therapist and chairwoman of the department of psychology at the University of New Brunswick.
Police in Longueuil, a small community located outside Montreal where the death occurred, are releasing few details, but have charged a 41-year-old man with criminal negligence causing death, public affairs officer Constable Martin Simard said yesterday. Police found numerous objects that appear to be intended for torture and are used in uncommon sex practices, but Const. Simard declined to provide specific information.
He said it's a "strong possibility" the woman was being strangled when she went into cardiac arrest, at which point the man attempted to resuscitate her.
Earlier this month, a retired college professor who lives in Montreal became the focus of U.S. media attention when he fell into a three-day coma after being left alone with a dog collar around his neck and a leather hood over his face in a New York sex club. Media reports said the man kept his S&M lifestyle secret from his family in Montreal and escaped to New York to indulge his penchant for bondage and domination.
Many sadomasochists say their sexual behaviour has nothing to do with violence, anger or the will to cause harm to others. Rather, it's a way for people who experience pleasure through pain to "stimulate" each other in a safe environment that is governed by strict codes and rules.
"What you might interpret as pain, another person in the right context interprets that as heightened pleasure," said Susan Wright, spokeswoman for the U.S.-based National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, who also engages in S&M. "It's different from violence or abuse in that those are cycles of control in terms of non-consensual control."
Ms. Wright said sadomasochists often set specific ground rules before a session to establish limits and code words that tell their partner to stop. Even those who haven't done extensive research on the subject should know their partner's limits, she said.
"It's common sense. It's not like we're doing brain surgery here. We're tying people up and having sex."
But some sexual psychology experts say that there is more to S&M than pain and pleasure, and that the innate emotions that push some people to seek pain as a way to achieve sexual gratification could cause them to take the behaviour too far.
Judy Kuriansky, a sex therapist and faculty member at the Columbia University Teachers College, said some people may have deep feelings of anger that cause them to accidentally go too far during a session. Even those who are considered professionals in the S&M community can unintentionally cause serious harm or death, Dr. Kuriansky said.
"They know what they're doing, but they can still make a mistake."
Dr. Byers said that while death is uncommon among people who engage in S&M, risk is inherent in the activity and there is potential for someone to get hurt. Although most couples are extremely careful and follow set rules to ensure their partner remains safe, they also accept a certain level of danger simply by engaging in the behaviour, she said.
"If you're taking physical risks then there are the chances of something going wrong. Those are the tragic cases."
Deadly games
The death of a Quebec woman during a reported S&M session isn't the first time someone has died after engaging in sex play:
December, 2007: British media reported that former BBC radio host Kevin Greening died after being hung upside down in a studded bondage harness.
April, 2006: Adrian Exley, who travelled from London for a bondage session, suffocated to death in the closet of a Boston man he met online. He was wrapped in heavy plastic and bound with duct tape while wearing a leather hood.
October, 2002: John Robinson was convicted in the United States of murdering several women after luring them to his home with the promise of sadomasochistic sex. Police discovered he was a serial killer after two women accused him of taking their S&M experience too far.

Hi

i would say that depends on the activities. If i go out mountain climbing it is my responsibility to follow safety procedures, but i consider the tour guide whit the expertise to be rather responsible to for the group's safety. If you are tied up and gagged and can do nothing, you have put your trust and safety in the hands of the Dominant, he or she is then responsible for you.

i wish you well

These are sad occurances, but they illustrate the difference between a responsible player who learns what they're doing and people who just haul off and do stupid things...
That man who died in New York should NEVER have been left alone in bondage- it's rule #1! For a C note an hour you should get a sitter. That club is sooo liable!

What's the thing Wiseman harps on? Breath play can kill you. You go into cardiac arrest after it if you're the unlucky fool who tries it. And don't start on me, it is risky and this is a classic illustration of how. It's been known for a long time that this can happen. It's why we go to workshops and learn if you're too ADD to just read a couple of books.

This is just really upsetting to me, because the information is sitting right out there at Barnes and Noble now. Or if they're out Amazon will send it over. There's just no excuse for some of the stuff people do and die. And people dieing upsets me.

Another example for the Darwin Prize- Household AC current to the body because they're too cheap to shell out $40 for a weak Tazer. AC holds people and won't let go until they're dead. DC is safer because it will throw people off- and a Tazer is weaker. Or should we say cattle prod? I hear the orange cone ones in porn are four thousand volts, a weak cattle prod. 120V AC is Death in any number of circumstances... Industry uses DC gennies because of the safety factor- shouldn't we? Good reason to get electricity from batteries. 12 volts is a little sting if the toy shorts out.

But my favorite was the guy who put nipple clamps on the girl and hooked her up to household current, right across the heart. Don't people stop and think?

It's a real shame but at least she died for something that she was enjoying at the time of her death. In a sense at least she died having fun,as opposed to really suffering from an incureable disease, what happened is sad but thats life i guess.

Both as a passenger in mountain climbing trip and a sub in BDSM play it's YOUR responsibility to monitor your own status and communicate that status to the guide or dominant.

The more trust you have in your dominant partner, the more responsibility you can give to them, but, you always have to have a way to communicate if you are for example getting nausea or feel some danger which is not a part of the scene.

I have never read of people having vanilla sex, that
died like those in these stories.
Dropping dead of a heart attack is far different then these "accidental deaths".
