defiantbadgirl -> What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/1/2008 7:45:11 PM)

These are the two things I find most the most offensive and why.

All sins can be forgiven except lack of belief.

In other words, non-consentual serial rapists, molesters, and serial killers like BTK who believe in God will go to heaven just by asking for forgiveness while genuinely good people who devote their lives to  helping others will go straight to hell if they are in any way skeptical.

If you get a divorce for any other reason than adultery, you can never remarry as long as the ex spouse lives without commiting adultery.

It doesn't matter if your spouse nonconsentually beats or rapes you as long as they don't commit adultery. It doesn't matter if the family goes days without food because a spouse has a drug addiction or gambling problem they refuse to get help for as long as they don't commit adultery. If you divorce that spouse, no matter how horrible they are, you are expected to spend the rest of your life alone. It's not like people can foretell what the future will bring before marrying someone. Why then should they be punished for the rest of their lives? That's just so wrong.

I guess I'm going straight to hell. I've tried reading it and my impression is, the author was on hallucinogenic drugs

I don't necessarily find anything in the bible offensive- I take in the contexts in which it was created and for the purposes it was created.  I guess if you tried to force yourself to believe and agree with everything in the bible, you might have a problem.  But I'm not a christian or a Jew.

I generally find people who use it for their own maligned purposes to be the offensive parties.

I find nothing offensive in the Bible - it's not Mein Kampf . What's troubling with the Bible is the Bible bashers.

Makes for a good foot stool, too.

CuriousLord -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/1/2008 8:22:13 PM)

The Bible's offensive in the sense that those who believe in it believe ill things of the acts and morals of those who disagree with it.  Assuming, of course, the one who may be offended actually cares what those silly enough to believe in it think.

The Bible is like a gun. It's not so much what it is, it's how it is used

i find Christians who use Mosaic Law (law that was created to bring the Jews to the Christ, and being Christians, they were freed of it when Christ came) to manipulate other people offensive - that is usually where people find the "offensive" things in the bible (in Leviticus and Numbers)

There are things in the Bible and especially in the old testament part that I do not agree with, but I see it primarily as texts documenting history, mutilated, even sometimes ordered in the wrong temporal order, often incomprehensible to everybody except me. What I find offensive are people that do not use their own mind, but instead robotically obey texts that they sometimes do and sometimes do not understand.

I agree.  I don't find the bible offensive, but I also don't find it to be a useful guide for my life.  I do have a problem with people who constantly spout verse though, especially when they don't understand the meaning of context or historical reference.

Standard Reply: "Which Bible"?

I find the KJV myself particularly offensive, mostly in part to James's taste for political absolutism, his financial irresponsibility, and his cultivation of unpopular favourites. Sounds familiar, dunnit?

Most people are affraid it will change their life.

So if it would change their lives and they would

have to change it, then they would find it offensive!

I have read the book a few times, but what I do not agree with is what has been taken out of the bible.Certain books which were not deemed for public consumption by the religous leaders, the apocrypha.

I believe if one is to read and perhaps learn from a book, all of it should be there, I mean how can someone take an understanding knowing there are parts, chapters even missing.

To take a balanced view of things all must be present.

Agreed and I did slog my way through it once. I much prefer Anne Rice.

It's a bit like reading something from the middle ages, written in archaic language, errors in translation and portions missing because they were lost, stolen or removed because of the political climate at the time.

I don't care how good even a modern book is, you can't read and understand it fully if someone ripped out every second page and a couple of chapters here and there.

There is a bit in there about if your neighbour works on a Sunday, they must be put to death. If that were the case, I could go kill all those pricks who insist on mowing their lawns on a Sunday morning.[:D]

MissMorrigan -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 3:46:49 AM)

I'm with you on that, KS, it's open to interpretation and that means it's open to interpretation by anyone with profound issues and hidden agendas. It's a good table mat to soak up any drips from a vase of flowers or a plant pot!

Yeah, I like that, if you were a bible nut and did do that quoting the 'good book', I wonder if you might get away with it. Certainly there would be support for you from the nutter communities.

MissMorrigan -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 4:10:15 AM)

Read it, it's a great work of fiction, seriously and you'll see why it's so open to interpretation and used by so many as a vehicle for their agendas. I was educated in a catholic convent school, I studied theology there, among other things, and learned all I needed to regarding religion - which was that it had no place in my personal life and money speaks all languages and crosses all religions. I have a bible, it's great for using to press fresh flowers.

Since I switched to the Brick Testament, the Bible has become a fun and easy read.

Gotta love the stories of King David for pure backstabbing, wifestealing, genocidal, doubledealing adventure.
