We've been looking for some places that would sell candles online in bulk.  The stores are soooo expensive and the quality is usually crap.

We're looking for long-burning pillar candles for ambiance as well as candles that would be useful for wax play (votives? vigil candles?).  Generally unscented.

We get a lot of matches on google, but I have no idea the quality so I figured I'd see who on here might have a good source that won't break the bank too badly.  When I see a pillar candle at $10+ EACH, that seems just a tad on the pricey side when I look around the room and wat to put up about a dozen of them! :)

I buy tons of candles at thrift stores and 99% are brand new still wrapped for pennies on the dollar .

Yea, I've been keeping my eyes out, but haven't had much luck there.  And those that I do find tend to either burn REALLY fast or in the case of some pillar candles I got, they melted through the side.

I've also been pretty wary of some of them from the wax-play perspective, because I honestly haven't any idea what they are made of.  Any text on the packaging is usually not in english or has no content information.
In any case, I just thought some people might have some sources.

Make your own. You can buy supplies either online or at craft stores.
Candle and soap making are pretty easy.

Yeah, wisconsin, hit the bee farmers up and see what they get for beeswax, get a chunk of 2-3-4-5-6- PVC for a mold and a wick and you are happening units.

Find an IKEA store.  That's where we go when we prepare to do Kinky Karnivals.

I've also done wedding candle buying from http://www.candle4less.com/Bulk---Wholesale.st.545.htm and http://www.candle4less.com/Church-and-Vigil-Candles.st.383.htm.  A case of 15 hour vigil candles for $15 isn't bad.  Another resource is http://www.sanjosecandle.com/.  (I get my bulk incense and charcoal here.)

I get votive candles for ambiance at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for ~$7 for a bag of 100, and I have a 8 cheap glass candle holders that I bought in an arts and crafts shop.

For functional wax play, I use ones that I found at my local hardware store for $2/box of 10.  Simple "Parafin Wax Emergency Candles".  Another reason to shop at Dom Depot (Home Depot) for many of your bondage needs!

Are you sure they are votives?  They sound like tealights, which is the only thing I've ever seen sold in a big bag like that.

Yeah, they were tealights, and they're great for ambiance... sorry about the mix up.  I did find a 12 pack of glass votive candles for $10 in Eckerds earlier tonight, however.

Just some updates.  I did find a couple places that have 10 and 15 hour votive candles in the 20 - 30 cent each range online.  Haven't found any places that really have rock-bottom prices on long-burn pillar candles.  I forgot the links at home so I'll get them up later.  I don't know what the shipping will end up being so it may not be any better than Walmart.

I looked a little bit into candle making per the suggestion above.  We've thought in the past it might be a cool idea to make our own, but honestly I have no idea if it is COST EFFECTIVE.  Just a casual pull up on ebay has 50lbs of wax (parafin) for about $60 with another $50 for shipping.  A) I have no idea if that is a good price and B) I have no idea how many candles that might make (say a 3" x 6" pillar, for example).

In any case, I'll put those links up later today.

My apologies for not getting this link up yesterday.

One of the better prices I found online (at a reputable company), for unscented votive candles at least, was at http://www.thebestcandles.com.  They have 10-hour votives for 17 cents each (dropping to about 14 cents in bulk) and 15-hour votives for 26 cents.  This shipping seems a smidge high ($13 for 144 15-hour candles for example) but I suspect most places will be that way.  Their prices on pillars seem ok, but I haven't shopped around that much for pillar type of candles to compare.

As a comparison, I checked Walmart yesterday and they had scented votives (10-hour) for 33 cents each.  Weirdly, they had no unscented ones.  Prices at Costco and Target were in the 95 cent range for a 10-hour unscented votive.

I did not find significantly better deals on ebay, and who knows what you get from ebay these days in terms of quality or if it will even show up.

In any case, there's some data points.  Hope that is helpful for some.

If there are any candle makers in this thread, I'd love to get some more feedback about the costs of making your own vs. buying them outright.

Well, I have some kind of general candle advice, the same I give everyone. Consider Partylite candles. They come in a wild variety of scents and colors and - are you ready for this? - ALL scents and colors burn cool! You can do black and red and purple decorations on the slut! How amazing is that?
If you are using so many candles that you are looking for a bulk supplier, maybe you should consider becoming a partylite rep. I know nothing about thier individual sales plan, but I know something of party plans in general, and you are going to get a big ol' starter pack, and then buy at a serious discount, part of which would be your 'commission'. Seriously, even if you never try to sell them to anyone and are just buying them for yourself, it may be worth it. OTOH, you may be able to sell them at your local munch, ect. I mean really, Black candles that are safe to play with! How cool is that!

Try church supply places. Their prices may be a bit higher than the local discount/variety shop but the quality will be good and you'll be sure that you can actually burn down the entire pillar. I'm in charge of purchasing at my church, and we've tried lots of candles from various places. Pillar candles, in particular, from discount stores are rubbish. The worst was a set where there was only about 2" of wick and the rest was just decorative wax. The only things I don't get from church supply is tealights, which are cheaper from Ikea.

There is a guy in Atlanta that makes some really nice candles for wax play, you may want to contact him and see if he can make you something custom. He makes candles because he likes doing it, so his stuff is pretty well priced, in my opinion.. I need to go get some stuff from him actually.

I liked my box of IKEA candles, because the staff was actually knowledgeable about the composition.  I was assured that the wax was paraffin, a colouring agent, and nothing else.  For wax-play, I recommend steering away from anything that refers to itself as "clean-burning," "smokeless," "dripless," or "long-lasting."  All of those are usually indicators that the candle contains stearine.  While it does offer the aforementioned virtues for non-perverted users, it has the drawback of raising the melt point considerably.

They sell candles and jars at the dollar store, 25 votives in a bag unscented and the pillar ones, not so great for the smell factor but not terrible either.
