Which males? I mean some guys really go for blonds... blonds don't generally do anything for me. Some guys like women who are aloof and arrogant.... I like bubbly, friendly, happy women. Some guys like dumb as a rock bimbos... I like highly intelligent bimbos. Some guys don't even like women, which frankly I'll never understand, but to each their own. Here's my point, before you can even attempt to analyze what a attracts whom to whom... you first need to narrow down who you are talking about. There is no universal power of attraction.
Now if you want to narrow it down a bit... say for example, why is it that men frequently are the ones pursuing women, but women rarely pursue men? That'd be another discussion entirely... though probably a pretty short one, there's too much evidence regarding biology as the source. Or you could ask why specific characteristics tend to be more attractive? Here too, biology and evolutionary conditioning would likely account for a large part of it, but also cultural and personal experience.

Again... what is "it?" I like brunettes because my very first girlfriend was a brunette... it made an impression. I like intelligent women because I tend to relate better to them. Those are part of "it" for me. But the very next guy you ask might have completely different answers for different reasons.
