summerblossom -> Yawning During Exercise (3/4/2008 9:35:33 AM)

I just wanted to know if this was normal or not and if others experience it. Everytime I do any sort of exercise, like weight lifting, stretching, and cardio, I start yawning uncontrollably. It can actually be annoying. Eventually by the end of my exercise routine it goes away but I was just wondering if anyone knows the cause of this?

bleusparkles -> RE: Yawning During Exercise (3/4/2008 9:36:46 AM)

Ha! Me too!

I think it has to do with using more oxygen ... Yawning is basically the brain's way of getting a JOLT of oxygen.

tsatske -> RE: Yawning During Exercise (3/4/2008 9:52:45 AM)

It does have to do with needing more oxygen. In my current condition (pregnant as well as the more usual crazy), just trying to stand can sometimes be all I can physically handle. In church on Sunday I yawned through the whole damn thing, esp. when we had to stand. Master kept looking at me and raising an eyebrow, and asking if I slept well last night. LOL.
I know that, for me, I yawn uncontrollably, in an uncomfortable way that feels like I can not 'complete' the yawn, when I am being a bit asthmatic. I would suggest asking your doc to do a lung capacity test on you.

I thought it had something to do with having a low blood sugar at that point..... but maybe I'm wrong.

this happens to me when i get upset or emotional.....i cannot stop yawning. (gets rather embarassing at a funeral.)

kyraofMists -> RE: Yawning During Exercise (3/8/2008 8:50:17 AM)

My physical trainer said it was most likely because I was hungry.  I don't yawn uncontrollably, but I would yawn every now and then.  When I had a snack before working out, I did not yawn.

I read something, somewhere, not too long ago that said yawning was a way of cooling your brain...

velvetears -> RE: Yawning During Exercise (3/8/2008 10:04:49 AM)

i read somewhere, or heard somewhere, that yawning helped release some chemical in our brain that fights off sleepiness.

Well into my run I will yawn a few of times. It seems very out of place to be running and yawning at the same time.

Here is a link that may be of help, especially the last paragraph.

Me too. Power of suggestion, and all that. For what it's worth, I've been on a major yawning jag for about two months. Coincidentally, it started shortly after I switched from one antidepressant to another. I kind of like it.

Despite popular belief yawning does not mean you are tired or sleepy.

Your body has something called "Hypoxic Drive" When you body is not receiving enough oxygen, or not at all for that manner, it is starting to enter Hypoxia. Hypoxic drive is the measurement and reaction that your body conducts to keep you breathing when you are not voluntarily controlling (like holding breath or purposely hyperventilating). It's basically what keeps you breathing even while you are asleep or even in unconscious.

Now back to your original question. Your yawning during exercise is your bodies hypoxic drive kicking and trying to pull enough oxygen into keep up with the demand. You can try prevent the yawning by forcing yourself to take deeper breaths and more frequent, at an even pace.

While stretching - yoga or mediational breathing patterns will work well.

While weight lifting - breathing out when you exert and sucking in when you are resisting the weight back to the starting position is best. This will give you a good rhythm as well as help you with the actual exertion.

Cardio is a bit different in this case. If you are yawning during cardio, I am guessing you are doing only cardio exercise and not cardiovascular. In other words you getting your heart rate up (possibly into a fat burn zone) but you are not exerting enough to the point you are having to breath hard. I.e. (assumption here) you are doing stairs or walking, where as running, rowing or spinning will not only get your HR up but work your vascular (lungs) system as well.

I hope that helps some =)

i yawn when i read out loud. and now im yawning  from reading about it..lol ohh and did you know that yawns are the most contagious thing in the whole wide world????  walk into a room of  people as soon as you make eye contact..yawn...then wait..lol and watch..soon they will be yawning as well..then other peoiple will see and yawn as well..you can even watch an animal yawn and start to yawn because of it lol

thinks the Kitty should take over the world by...yawning......
thinks bunny should spank Kitty for using such underhandedness to take over the world..just my opinion :)

What a great explanation, LittleMegan, thanks!  I actually found myself yawning last night during the weight training class but not when we were doing cardio & I was wondering what the heck was going on since I really was enjoying the class.  Good to know [:D][:D]
