Years ago, in my first year in the scene I attended Black Rose. While walking through the vendor area with some more experienced friends, I noticed what looked to me like a set of crochet hooks in a leather case. I turned to my friend and said "Hey, what are those?" To which she replied "You don't want to know."
When someone in Kink tells me I dont' want to know about something...I wanna know.
So I pressed her and she said "They are sounds." I stopped and listened for a minute. "I don't hear anything," I said, which of course made everyone crack up. "No dope, ureathral sounds. For ureatheral insertion." Being new, and someone who had suffered from UTI's long term, I absolutely cringed.
For me, it's still an area of play that I've avoided. I haven't found a desire for catheters or other intimate medical play aside from the rare "Doctor with a Speculum" scene. But I know people who are into it and enjoy this kind of play and have watched scenes of this nature.
The advice that's come is all good. Sterile field is extreamly important when doing this kind of play. There are links on the web that can tell you exactly how to create and maintain a sterile field if you aren't knowledgeble. Cleaning and maintaining this kind of equiptment after use is essential, and it's my opinion that insertables should not be shared with others. I believe that you should buy and keep your own insertables and use them exclusively.
