You would, perhaps. However that is the least sanitary option. And in the field, lack of good sanitary practice can cripple a unit as fast as a firefight. What if the animal *were* diseased? Cutting it open and then putting that disease-filled bloody knife back with your equipment would be a *bad* idea. So we talk of shooting the animal. Ok, and perhaps there were suspected insurgent activity around and a single shot would either expost our guys or let them know we were coming.

There are MANY factors in this that don't and may never know. What we *saw* was fucked up. But it's a 15 second snip of (one of) a guy's year-long or longer stay in a warzone. You can say what we saw is fucked up....but assuming that we know all the details at this point is jumping the gun a bit.

According to Snopes, this guy's tour was less than a year.. 7 months, I believe.  And I believe that the basic training includes lessons on how to clean the weapons in the field.  Since the weapons in the field (except for medics) are not generally expected to be used for "sanitary' uses, I don't see what your point is.

Thank you, Celticlord. LOL on that last part.

Smith, my statement was made under the assumption there was something ailing this puppy; trying to give the guy a break on the death its self. If you would rather I not....

My dad was a jarhead...he also used to refer to MREs as May Reduce Efficiency, Major Rectal Exams, and Military Refusing Extraction.

Actually, Invictus, serial killers, as children, generally cut their teeth torturing animals to death. It's a symptom of severe mental illness, not some sort of by product of being in a war. People like him will soon be coming home to live amongst you and while you might be comfortable having a psychopath for a buddy, many sane people would not.

If he'd had to choose between the death of a person and the puppy, that would be understandable. This was an act of casual cruelty, done for the approving eye of the camera and his comrades. It was not a mercy killing. If the dog had needed to be put down, any reasonable person would have done so discretely, not in a grandstanding manner, capped by a little WTF shoulder shrug.

Are you seriously suggesting this video is a put up job? Someone made a special effects puppy and did a few hours of  CGI on their home computer? Did you look at it frame by frame. Would you like another straw to grasp at?

You can defend his actions with fantasies about rabid puppies menacing marine batalions but I'm not buying your rationalisations.

Z.

Way back when, at good ole' Fort Dix, there was one of those marching/cadence "songs" that went something like this:

A little bird
da de-de da (don't recall the words)
he landed on
my window sill.
I lured him in
with a piece of bread
and then I smashed his
fuckin' head!

Charming.

Could you please explain this statement; who are you refering to as the "fuckwad in chief"?

That's the first thing you got right in this whole thread.

Actually, I've said several things right in this thread. Whether or not you can emotionally separate yourself from the subject matter enough to see that is not my problem, it's yours. If you would like to separate yourself emotionally and discuss openly any of the points I have made, then peachy. If, however, you would rather react to everything I have said as though it's a direct attack on you, move along. I have time for that kind of bullshit.

Nice try, but straw man arguments are passe and pathetic.

Next guess?

My "straw man agurment" is no worse than your assertion that you needn't any more facts in this case to fry this marine. Personally, I *want* to know the other factors. I don't want to just bury my head in the sand from the bad bad man and have him made to 'go away.' I am genuinely interested in what made him to this and why he thought it was a good idea. I already know I probably won't agree with his reaasoning, but like so many others with an interest in psychology, I would like to know how he got to this point.

As far as the cliff thing though.. since (AFAIK) there are no videos showing the actual drop from the cliff, we have no way of knowing if the pup hit the bottom at a great height and died.. if it hit the bottom and wandered off (slightly dazed, but ok), or if it hit the bottom, and was critically wounded and left to die in a most painful and heinous manner...

a knife to the throat, or a snapped neck would have assured it of a quick death.  NOT that I condone doing that to any living creature, but it certainly would have been more humane than tossing it off a cliff and walking away without knowing what the end result was.  Just my .05.

Excellent point.

The point is that field sanitation may not get a disease off the knife, should that be the method employed. We had "field sanitation stations" in afghanistan too. They included water and purell hand santizer and were right outside the port-a-jons. Obviously they weren't fool proof, because many people got a condition the docs tell us was related to improper santation -- such as the runs.

*If* the dog was believed to have a disease and *if* I were told to dispatch said canine I would *certainly* not use my knife. No way am I having suspected diseased blood anywhere near me if I can help it.

Good grief! I hope I am not thinking of the same PA Ave. as you are talking about. Though, it wouldn't surprise me.

When people make their voices heard about this type of behavior, enough to get federal laws changed, it shouldn't come as any surprise to learn why there is so much outrage about the puppy-throwing video. Real or not, it is just sick, and to the millions of pet owners in the US alone -- who spend BILLIONS of dollars on their pets, BTW -- it is very much akin to throwing a human infant off a cliff. Senseless.

What I think is senseless is that we spend billions on pets, but we still have homeless PEOPLE.  That we won't even take care of our own species first is amazing to me.  It should be a felony to feed an animal that is a pet before all the humans on the planet have enough to eat.

Pets are the only one of those two groups that are truly innocent. If an animal bites a person, chances are it's got soemthign wrong with it or the person did something to it. Animals offer unconditional love and loyalty to their owners. As a species....we can't seem to grasp that concept.

The guy on the radio said this dude was doing training in Hawaii. Not Iraq. Anyway, he's still a jerk for throwing a puppy just for the sake of having it on camera.

The "guy on the radio" was wrong. The guy is stationed in Hawaii at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base on the northern side of Oahu. At the time of the video, he was DEPLOYED to Iraq.
