DrkAngl, to help get rid of most of the annoying random IMs through Yahoo, you can do the following:
1. Sign into Yahoo Messenger or chat.yahoo.com
2. For Messenger, go to Messenger --> My Profiles --> Edit/View Profile. For chat.yahoo.com, click Add/Change Profile
3. click on "Edit" by the profile you use for chatting. Most people just have one, but you never know.
4. Click "Edit Profile Information".
5. At the very bottom, uncheck the box saying "Add to the Yahoo member directory"
6. Click "Submit changes"

And if my computer, the beast running Windows 98SE with a 4GB hard drive and 192MB of RAM can run the newest version of Yahoo, AIM, and MSN without issue, I think your computer might need to be looked at.

Oh, and to answer the question, I don't give out my IM info to anyone I meet here until we've exchanged a couple messages and I feel like I want to talk to the person in realtime. Hell, I trust the message board people enough to give them out now. If I get creepy people, that's what "block user" was made for.

I didn’t think so, but I have been, for lack of a better word, scolded, by people who think that it is a waste of time and energy, not to mention rude to not give them what they want.

I use a similar response all the time, for the reasons TameMeMature lists in her post.
Like TameMeMature, I think that anyone who reacts in a negative way to such a request has a problem that raises an immediate red flag. Block them and don't give them another thought.

I tend to wait a few converstions. I rather like yahoo or AIM if only because it means I can talk and do other stuff at the same time. Sitting down and writeing out a longer message, with my ninja-typo abilities can take a while.

At the same time though, I'd rather get to know the person first before giving them a conduit to talk to me off of this website. There's plenty of people I've decided really don't need to chat it up with me after the 2nd message or so.

How do you have a conversation with someone if they don't give you their Yahoo ID?

Well first of all I would have to say that I am one of those who ask for a messenger id example: yahoo. I do so for the simple reason because sometimes it is weeks before I have time to enter into this site due to work or homelife either way I feel that if I had someones yahoo id it would make it easier for us to communicate. In reference to those who has made you change you id name there are those types of people in all walks of life that you may come across. I stand behind the theory that there is nothing wrong with giving out yahoo messenger id even if you have to make up one for each site diffrent from the original id for the account.
