sirsholly -> carpel tunnel.......ow!!!! (3/8/2008 6:17:22 AM)

I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I had a carpel tunnel release on both hands about a year ago. The pain, numbness and loss of control has reoccured in one hand, requiring more surgery.

I know the first surgery was successful since i was symptom free for almost a year. We practice moderate bondage..nothing heavy like suspension...with fleece lined wide leather cuffs. Does anyone know if there is a relation between the reccurence and bondage?
Thanks so much in advance for any/all info!

Very doubtful....what do you do for a living?

sirsholly -> RE: carpel tunnel.......ow!!!! (3/8/2008 6:27:10 AM)

i am a family therapist, but have been a stay at home mom for a yr and a half (i am going back to work soon though, just for thr R&R!).
The most strenuous part of my job was a good brisk sit.

Well, typing and other fingering wrist shit then........it is not at all uncommon for it to come back, the surgery is rarely lifelong relief.  A year isn't bad.

IT guy here, fucking claws I got, sometimes excruciating pain to lift a loaf of bread.

Are you sure it's carpal tunnel and not nerve compression in another part of the arm?

I was originally diagnosed with carpal tunnel in my right arm, after a few cortisone shots and a nerve study, the doc discovered my primary problem was cubital tunnel syndrome, so when he went in to do the carpal tunnel release, he moved my ulnar nerve as well.

As much as I thought I would never say this to anyone because they are just plain evil, if you haven't had one, you should ask for/have a nerve study done to determine what nerves are the ones with the problem.

sirsholly -> RE: carpel tunnel.......ow!!!! (3/8/2008 11:38:11 AM)

DaddysBlondie, thanks, you have a good point. I was told it was carpel again without the benefit of a nerve conduction study (i talked my way out of it.....you called it right when you said they are evil!!)  I guess i need to put on my big girl panties and get it done.

The first surgery worked so well and the surgeon told me the average recurrence time is 5 years. That why i was questioning if wrist restraints could have brought this on sooner.

opensoul -> RE: carpel tunnel.......ow!!!! (3/8/2008 12:16:18 PM)

I have another question, Could it be thoracic outlet syndrome, too? I have had a few clients who had the carpel surgery, then they found out it was this instead.

daddysblondie -> RE: carpel tunnel.......ow!!!! (3/8/2008 1:23:23 PM)

Yep, I had three of those evil nerve studies done. They never get any easier to take.

On a different note, I don't think I've ever found wrist cuffs to bother me. Rope doesn't work though, tight enough to really restrain me instantly gets the tingle in my hand going because of the new location of my ulnar nerve. (Guess it's a good thing that I'm such a "good girl"... lol)

Good luck with whatever it turns out to be. After my surgeries, I developed a nasty case of tennis elbow, presumably because I was overcompensating at work. After 9 months of therapy and treatment that wasn't giving me any relief, I had to walk away from my career, have surgery to correct the damaged tendon, go back to school and I'm just starting over.

I have had carpal tunnel in the past,  working in an auto factory and  having experienced repetitive strain injuries one of the things I learn is that proper  ergonomics cqan help to prevent many problems from occuring, If I start experiencing numbness and pain in my wrists I start putting on wrist supports, putting them on snuggly as each time I start bending the wrist the wrist support will dig in, this teaches me what hand positions are causing the problems and I can learn ways to change my hand positioning so as to keep at the wrists  near 180 degrees(unbent)   which is the neutral position  I will keep the wrist supports on snuggly for a couple of weeks inorder to retrain myself , after gradually loosen of the wrist supports over a period of a few weeks to give the wrist time to heal and  so as to restrengthen up the wrists as confining them snuggly in wrist supports can weaken the muscles more.. I use corsets for upper back and low back supports for lower back in the same manner as soon as problems start occuring inorder to learn what I doing that goes against good ergonomic positioning and to help me get me relearn  to do the job in near neutral positioning or to rearrange my work station to prevent poor positioning  as a result I have been successful for the past 13 years from allowing minor repetitive strain injuries from getting worse.  if you do a lot of writing in you work learn to hold a pen less tightly also look into buying ergonomically styles pens, use supports as well  to help prevent fist clenching in your sleep, if you spend a lot of time at the computer invest in ergonomic armrests also ensure that your keyboard/chair is at the right height .. your, elbows should be at your sides bent at 90 degrees your  forearms as you are  sitting should parallel with the floor if angling upward or downward it means your working with your wrists bent rather than in the neutral position.

btw...i recieved an e-mail on the other side from a sweet member suggesting Max Fisch's Health Forum for answers to questions such as these. The site looks interesting but i havent really had a chance to really get any info yet. Too busy shoveling snow. Makes the ol' carpel tunnel feel great.....grrrrrrrr

Just a suggestion for RSI support including carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, and similar tendinitis-type problems. Try one of a number of bruise/soft-tissue herbal products. The one I can think of that's commercially availablle is called "InjureAid" and it is in oil form. I know people (including me) who have used this and other herbal healing salves or ointments for sprains, bruises, ACL problems, carpal tunnel, traditional tennis elbow, thumb injuries, etc, etc. At least a few of them have been folks who were carpal tunnel post-surgery, and got sufficient relief that they felt no need to pursue further surgery.

Your mileage will undoubtedly vary.

Disclaimer: I'm not any sort of licensed medical practitioner, not even a "trained herbalist". Nonetheless, I make one such product (Green Comfort) which may one day be more widely available than by e-mailing me. I manufacture about a liter per quarter and bottle it by the ounce or 4 ounces for local sale to the cognoscenti.

Before singling out bondage as the cause, you should also look at your general lifestyle; do you keyboard, daily, how many hours a day??
If you do keyboard a lot, is your keyboard setup flat or did you put the feet up under it? Your keyboard should either be flat or better yet, in a keyboard tray and tipped down so your hand and wrists can remain relatively straight with no bend in the wrists to strain them. If you have a mouse, I highly recommend changing it out with a good quality track ball, which allows your hand to relax and you can customize it to fit your needs. Once you get used to it, you will hate going back to an old fashioned mouse because it gives hand cramps or as we called it "the claw". I have been a heavy use keyboarder for 25 years, at least 10 hours a day, and whenever I get carpel tunnel symptoms, I treat them quickly by wrapping the wrist and putting a band on the upper forearm (for tennis elbow). Ice can be beneficial but it is the ergonomic changes that will minimize your discomfort at the keyboard.
You may want to wrap your wrists with a support, similar to those used at the Gym, before placing them into bondage.
best wishes to you  [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m6.gif[/image]
