When I left my husband, WEAVE (Women Escaping A Violent Environment) was good to me.  I donate belongings to their thrift store to sell to other women who need to buy decent stuff for cheap (like I did) and so the proceeds can help others who were in my shoes.

I have started looking into volunteering at a local children's cancer center.

I know I am going to sound awful - maybe.  Don't know.
I'm not going to say if I do or don't because I guess I see volunteering and gifting as personal and not something to tell people about, unless I am being sponsored or on a activist march or actively promoting something for example World AIDs Day etc.
It's too personal a thing for me and for me personally I would feel like I was gloating.  But more power to people who give and say hey.

I used to feel this way too, but my views changed.  If my talking about volunteering or donating inspires someone else to do the same, then the giving continues and grows, and that's why I talk about it.  But I understand where you're coming from.

My company operates a food bank, and I both collect & deliver food for our needy members & clients.

All three of us donate blood, clothes, food & cash when available.

i do not donate money - i don't have enough money to support myself...but that being said i have lots of time...and when i am physically able to, i do so...it doesn't have to be "organized" to be volunteering or charitable...i help when i can, where i can...

Bravo to you, you do what you are able to do. Me, I was in the same situation as you, I was ok when I started the sponsorship, but times changed,I lost my marriage, I became ill, lost my job and ended up on the delightful UK benefits system, all being worked out, living on £8.50 a week was a challenge. I could have marginally more if I did not sponsor the um, possibly £3 more a week, but still that amount, neither here nor there, and I did not have the heart to break the agreement, survival of a third world country person was a greater need than mine.I could live on me for longer than they, with our western diet.

The person I sponsored had a desire to become a nurse in her country, to help others, I was fully prepared to be a sponsor in this country should she desire to come here for her nurse training.

Being a person myself who is unfortunate enough to not have children, I felt it was the least I could do.

stella41b -> RE: Charity/Charity work (3/12/2008 5:29:42 PM)

I recently decided to devote my artistic work and career entirely to charity and am working along with others to set up a registered charity which will be international to fight social stigma on behalf of the stigmatized through theatre workshops and fringe theatre productions to enable such people to share their experiences, talents, skills, and interests with people in community and eventually society with the aim of achieving through their work and achievements help and support with overcoming their stigma in order to achieve more independence and to return better established to mainstream society.

The principle of the charity is very simple - we all need recognition, acceptance and acknowledgement of what we have to offer and share with other people, but some people - those who have been cast aside and either discriminated against or shunned by mainstream society need this more than others.

We take people who have been left behind and who other people normally would perceive as people with 'problems' - the homeless, the long term unemployed, long term drug and alcohol abusers, we put them through theatre workshops based on my own interpretation of the Stanslavski Method - based not on Pavlovian thought but that of Rudolf Steiner, Noam Chomsky and Dr Eric Berne (founder of Transactional Analysis) and we give them a production to work with together in a group or 'theatre'.

However this isn't a theatre of homeless people or drug addicts, this is theatre, period. The people we work with are actors, and when they go out on stage the artistic standard is the same as that of a professional theatre.

We also work with the non-white community, presently the black community, as it appears Britain has yet to produce a major film release with a black actor or actress in the leading role, there's no black film or stage directors in professional theatre. It would also appear that the poorer the people an office or organization deals with, the greater chance you have of finding black people working in the office.

This curious anomaly in British society or apartheid is more down to the ineffectiveness of political correctness as opposed to racism, for rather than fight racism and other forms of prejudice political correctness increased it.

The project or charity side of the theatre - which isn't one theatre but a new concept in theatre, and therefore can be either one theatre or ten thousand - has exploded and we now have a waiting list of interested organizations with offers of funding and support from various London boroughs and central government.

I also do voluntary work with the homeless, and work with different agencies providing free interpreting between Polish and English to help them to help homeless Polish migrant workers and also liaise with prople like the Polish Consulate, BARKA (a Polish homeless charity based in Warsaw) and people here.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Charity/Charity work (3/13/2008 12:12:43 AM)

I used to sew baby blankets and bibs and other baby items for charity, and once in a while I put together gifts for teens and stuff in the hospital. but it got very very expensive, what with buying all the material and then shipping and I stopped doing it. There were several diffrent charities, there was wee care and angels in need, and and all crafts for charity, they were not babie exclusive, they had as ponsored charity each month, one month it was babies, one month it was kids in the hospital, one month it was seniors in nursing homes, and one month it was the indian reservation.

and I volunteered at the spca which, was not charity, but it was donating my time.

I am curious, how many of you:

Donate to charities?

Work with or on behalf of charities?

if you do, which ones and why, of not, why not?

CuriousLord -> RE: Charity/Charity work (3/13/2008 12:16:26 AM)

I neither donate nor work for charities.

I don't donate because I'm a broke college student, and I don't work for them because I'm a busy college student.

Still, later in life, I plan on doing some positive things with my money.  I'm working hard to have a very good job, but I'm not an overly expensive person.  It's my hope that I can use the extra money to productive ends.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Charity/Charity work (3/13/2008 12:21:27 AM)

I wouldn't donate money even if I had tons, and I can barely get by these days any more,  because you never know if it goes where it belongs, and half the time only penies of the donation actually go to who it was prommised to. I give my time and energy. I also give items like home made things and books and stuff depending on what the need is.

I give regularily to Medicines sans Frontieres, and locally to an organisation who cares for poor/disatvantaged children. They provide hot meals for the kids, put some decent clothes on them, help with problems and schoolwork and give some much needed care and affection. This place is also where clothing and toys my kids have outgrown go.
At this moment my time is devoured by my children and my schooling. However, I do try to do the small things, helping in kindergarten and school and such.

Absolutely OG - I get that about promoting the spiral of giving.  If I attend an event or something similar, I have often posted on the board here when a specialist day comes up, or an organisation has requested advertising.  I am totally happy and comfortable voicing my support for organisations.  The private matters of money is what I meant - to me that is personal and whether I do or don't isn't for the knowledge of others - even the charity itself.  But like I said - full kudos to everyone who does hey.

NPR and my church are the primary two because I enjoy their services so often.  I feel it only appropriate that I do for them.

I donate money to the local rescue ministries and women's shelters.   I prefer not to donate to the big outfits as I don't think they are as efficeint with the money.

I give blood regularly and stop for broken down motorists.  I typically give blood 6 to 9 times a year and change 3 or 4 flat tires a year.  Just becaue it's the right thing to do.

EDIT:  I also donate heavily to Goodwill, but that is more selfish than charitable.  The tax savings are typically way more than I could sell the items for and it's a lot cheaper.

How do you know that she exists? How do you know that she got your money? Did you meet her? Did you transfer the money to her individual bank account? Perhaps she did get some money, but how many other people assume that she got their money?

I'm easily the largest non-corporate, single monetary donor to high school / little league /Babe Ruth / after-school athletic programs in the town in which I live.

And a few years back, I used to coach H/S wrestling and pitch batting practice / drag the field/ operate the pitching machine / Play pepper.

If it’s sports-minded, highly competitive and keeps em’ outa trouble - I’m down for the kids….

I'm a player....nota player hater......[:D]
