Well, I hate it, when a person does not prefer to stretch their mind to include another person's viewpoint and happiness in it, but instead, chooses to rain on someone else's party. They seem to think it will make their own world brighter, that it will prove them superior, but it won't.
Puppy, as Cali remarks below, people wear collars for various reasons - maybe you want it to flag you as a submissive, or as someone into puppy play, maybe you feel good, in it, maybe it excites you. It is not inappropriate or disrespectful to wear one, when you are not collared to a specific person.
It is true that these days, many in the scene have heard that when you wear a collar, you are taken, and therefore, they may leave you alone, thinking that they will interrupt your service to a dominant.
(- whereas this was not always the social convention, in the scene; people often wore a collar simply to identify themselves as a submissive or bottom, till fairly recently.)
Just as in Cali's analogy, you may wear a ring on the third finger of your left hand and that's fine, but others may believe it means you're married.

Puppy, if you like your collar, wear your collar. You will run into narrow-minded, judgmental people who will tell you that you are wrong. Just smile and tell them you will give their opinion all the consideration it deserves.
