I hate it when white girls who have learned a handful of things about a particular culture think that makes them part of that culture and makes everyone else ignorant morons because they aren't as bigotted about the potential uses of aspects of that culture as they relate to private expressions of love. Without actually knowing who the fuck they're talking to.

yeah i hate when people do that with paganism too, i dislike having a culture taken apart piecemeal by people who don't know what they're talking about

and the little girls who run around this city in psuedobondage gear without a clue what is that they're wearing...

touchy issue. This is American, a land whose greatest streaghnth is the Borg way we assimulate every culture that comes our way.
I don't want to make anyone feel 'raped' of culture, so it is important to try not to stomp on what is sacred to each. But i do want to take advantage of what is good and learn from every culture.
I really think the thing at issue here, though, is not so much the using what is sacred as if it were maundane - it is more taking up one or two things you like from a culture, rather piecemeal, but then refusing to acknowlege that that is all you did - learn a little from a wise people. Instead, with one or two borrowed facets of a culture, to go around trumpeting great cultural knowledge and 'dising' other people - both those not so 'in the know' as you, and those actually OF the culture you are borrowing from.
This is like - well, like my crazy ass vocabulary. I must know a half a dozen words each in maybe 30 or even 50 differant languages. I love the richness this lends my vocabulary, esp since most of them are words with wonderful shades of meaning that we don't have in English.
But if I were to start correcting the speach patterns of a native French speaker becuase, French being one of my better languages, i can actually form a half a dozen whole sentences in it - how stupid would that make me look?

In fairness to the white girl in question, this is what she was complaining about and if the context of the discussion had been different, I might have agreed with her.

However, the irony of it is SHE'S FREAKIN' WHITE and not even part of the culture in question. She just participates in a single part of it and then gets her panties in a bunch when someone suggests another perfectly acceptable use for the same part that she's participating in.

yeah i try to be lot more conscious about what i do and say now-- not to the point of paranoia but now that i'm out as a non-wiccan witch, i'm noticing how much pagan culture is demonized in american culture and it makes me sit back and say whoa...so i try to be at least of aware of what i'm doing. i had an argument during one of my seminars with a guy that told me that i would never be able to fully grasp it. my response was yes well i might be white, but i'm also a woman, overweight, pagan, and queer. it happens to me too.

Yeppers.. I know.. That is why I was Passing the NyQuil.. not drinking it. *smiles* no pickling the bebe. Heck.. I have not drank caffine, or eaten crapy stuff for over a month. I must have been gearing up without knowing it. When Ya'll go about to eat of the dead animals.. I will just head to a different room. It will pass in 3 months.. and I can handle the smell and idea again.. ( at least to chicken then) I did eat some fish for lunch though. ( Go Me! )

Maybe Glub and cluck are ok... just depends.

and there must be avocados.... YUM! Can not get enough of them... and mangos. Guac. is like the best thing in the whole wide world.... *rubs tummy happily*
