I lived in a cabin in the woods one summer. There had been a pump at one time years before to pump the water from the river down below. So every morning, I would take 2 5-gallon buckets down the steep path to the river, fill them & haul them back up the steep hill. For bathing, we just went nekkid with a bar of soap into the river which was fed by glaciers. It was so cold that my skin would turn beet red within seconds. We had a wood stove, but no chopped wood, so after the water-hauling, my little girl & I would go for our "wood-walk", finding deadwood & bringing it to the path on the way out, then gathering it on the way back for the day's cooking. To this day, I prefer cooking on a wood stove to anything else. Thanks, Holly, for reminding me about a wonderful summer in my life.
