My Ex Mother in Law gets her insulin from Canada it is 1/3 the price it is here. A Sad commentary I think but US if it helps you breathe, eat or pump blood, the pharmaceutical companies have you by the short hairs. Insulin has been on the market since 1923 and there is STILL no Generic, they charge all the market will bear for it. Some would say it is because they are developing ways for delivery and to make it store longer but believe me, with the number of Diabetics on insulin in this country alone the price should be going down..not up. What I could buy for $25 a bottle  5 years ago is now $65 and I don't see it going down even though it is now being made without using animal insulin these days.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: I love it when..... (11/24/2008 11:17:25 AM)

poen, I take a med for Crohn's Disease that has no generic & without insurance, it costs me $400+ for a 30-day supply.  How freakin ridiculous is that??  And every time I see advertising in the media for prescription meds it gets me pissed off because I know that's where a lot of the price of our meds goes.

I love it when someone PMs me on the other side because I mentioned my um and Aspergers Syndrome and it turns out the person who PMed me has an um the exact same age as mine who was just diagnosed. And she lives near Warden! My um may have a friend, the same age as him who identifies with him. Isn't that so cool?

I love it when I'm reading the refrigerator is a bomb thread & poen gives the link to freecycle & I go there & put 3 ads up for all the donations I have on my front porch that I hadn't gotten around to getting to the needy & everything is claimed in about 1/2 hour.  Now let's see if I'm gonna love it that they show up & cart it all away!!

Just so you know we have much stricter guidelines impressed upon us by the FDA than Canada does and we also do more quality control testing. (I work at a pharmaceutical company) yes it is sad in a way, but we also go to great lengths to make sure that the drugs that you take here are pure and free from contaminants, shelf life testing etc. If you could see the amounts of testing that are done if you could see on a daily basis what a drug must go through in order to be released you could probably understand or begin to understand why they cost what they do. Just as you could probably get the medications that are gotten in canada in China for much cheaper than you do in Canada they have even less guidelines and often their drug products are so dirty they cannot be legally sold in the us or have to undergo so much "cleaning"

Generics cannot be legally made until the original patent on the drug has expired. (in this case I don't know when the patent would expire or if it has or even if you could make a cheaper insulin)

The patent has expired on Insulin and rDNA Insulins ages ago, they change a the process just a hair and re-patent it. Novo Nordisk brought out insulin R in 1923..which is why we have Novolog r and that line, Humalog ( came out when Novologs patent expired with a slight change in processing) Lantus, and so forth.

I can believe the amount of testing for purity etc..but the FDA is not as strict as you would be led to believe since they accept the testing by the company producing the drug as the proof of the safety of the drug. I have been on the wrong end of Vioxx, Prandin and Avandia, just to name a few. Deaths cropping up and injuries to other organs a couple of years after the drugs are certified safe byt he company and the FDA, is not a strong endorsement.

I Do Love that so far I am still alive despite chronic illnesses and some nasty surprises from the Drug companies...and I know I probably wouldn't be alive without some of them, but Geeze...I would like for them to do heir testing and find out the problems BEFORE I take them..and bring the cost down to manageable.

Poenkitten
P.S. some how I don't think Canada has less stringent criteria..the drugs come from the plants here in the US and I doubt the companies change the process because it is going to Canada.

So's Canada but you need a passport to go there!  **Dumber shit**

listen Retardo...YOU wanna tell all the Canadians they are US citizens?

This made me laugh so hard.  I've made this analogy with folks soooo many times.  When people used to ask where my ex was from, I'd say Sri Lanka, it's an island country in the Indian Ocean.  They'd smile and say, "Oh, he's Indian then."  I'd correct them and say, "No, it's its own country, it doesn't even touch India."  *blank stares*  "Do the people over there look Indian?"  I'd say, "Well, they have dark skin and eyes, and black hair - at least most of them do."  Then I'd get a satisfied look from them, and they'd say, "Well, then he's Indian."  Whereby, I would have to say, "The US, Canada, and Mexico are all in North America, but they are separate countries that happen to be on the same continent.  Going with your logic, you must be Mexican, right?  It doesn't matter that North Carolina isn't in Mexico, the countries still touch."    [8|]     Then, I'd get mean looks or muttering as they walked away.

Geez...  [>:]

My best friend from my college days and her husband and her brother are doctors, and Canadian citizens, who live in the US and have for a very long time (decades).  They had a practice together in Canada and one of them was in pharmaceutical research and production up there.  After working there for a long time, seeing what was going on in several of the testing sites and the plants (which not all Canadian meds come from the US), they quit prescribing certain Canadian meds to their patients because the testing facilities had standards that most school cafeterias wouldn't allow.  (their words)  What Imp says is very true.  While it totally sucks ass  that we pay outrageous prices for our meds, try getting what you need overseas, even in second world - not to mention third world countries where I've been dreadfully ill, and you'll be amazed at how much better our drugs are.
