I love it when smarmy people call me to tell me I'm doing something wrong and end up apologizing! Got a phone call from an insurance company, something like this:
REP: Your patient, Mrs. Smith, called us to complain that you were billing her instead of us for her visits. Why are you not doing your job?
ME: Which part of my job, exactly, do you think I am not doing?
REP: The part where you are supposed to bill us.
ME: Really? Are you aware that we are not participating with your network?
REP: Ohhhh, uhhhh, no. You're not in our network?
ME: No. Are you aware that when I do send you a claim, as a courtesy to the patient because the patient insists on it, you do nothing with it at all and it goes into a black hole never to be seen again? No acknowledgment, no denial, nothing?
REP: Uhhhhhh, no.
ME: Are you aware that your company has a policy of telling patients that you will pay for services but neglect to mention that you won't pay for those services if they come see us?
REP: Uhhhhhh, no.
ME: Are you aware that we have told Mrs. Smith numerous times that if she wants to see us, she will have to pay for it herself and she has acknowledged that in writing?
REP: Uhhhhhh, no. Uhhhh, I guess this is the point where I say I'm sorry for the apparent confusion.
ME: No, this is the point where you say you're sorry for telling me I wasn't doing my job without bothering to find out all the facts first.
REP: (big pause) I'm sorry. I'll call the patient and tell her that we won't pay for the services.
