Probably as many times as the people who place "Free Tibet" t-shirts and put similar bumper stickers on their volvos.  By the way I like the chip on my shoulder, it keeps me from living with my head in the clouds.

Been to Tibet. Studied the Dalai Lama's works. Signed the petition.

Thanks Luckydog for the thread. Thanks CelticLord for the petition link.

So criticising Chinese atrocities against the entire population of Tibet is 'living with heads in the clouds', because the Lamas had the good life?

What BS.

Ya know, I know quite a bit about many different cuisines, but I know zero about Tibetan. Could you give me an overview? Also, was it difficult to breathe? Isn't llasa about 11,000 ft.?

I never said the Chinese were not responsible for oppression.  However, I doubt the numbers they put up for Tibetans killed.  I am not the only one that questions the 400,000 to 1.2 million killings that Free Tibet supporters claim.  The cultural genocide you speak of has to do with Chinese migrants moving into the Tibetan region.  Cultures are never perpetual, they change as the world changes.

[clip]

[Tibet] was a feudal state.  95% of the population worked for 5% of the population.    [clip]  You should really learn more about what it is that you are supporting.

So, would you agree that that 95% of the Tibetan people you mention have had enough oppression, over time?

I won't sign a useless petition online.  It doesn't hold any weight at all.

I disagree.  The petition in question is directed to the Olympic chairperson, and if you think that international public opinion doesn't matter to him, I'd say you're mistaken.

As for whether or not the Chinese mind about the world's scrutiny regarding Tibet, and their right to host the Olympics - what do you think this activity is all about:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080315/ap_on_re_as/china_tibet?

Those are some facts.

What do you suppose all those 95-percenters, the ones who used to be oppressed, are risking their lives to protest about, while they've got a chance of being heard for the moment?

I mean, what with the improvement in conditions under the Chinese occupation that you're describing

On this one I'm with slaveboyforyou. I don't see why this is our concern. I am well tired of the U.S. playing World Cop. If the U.N. can't fix it, fuck it...

Me too, I couldn't care less about Tibet!
Why do some people in the U.S. and England care about foreign countries who's people if they had the chance would kill them?
Hey, if *you* care that much *you* pick up a rifle and go help them.
God, I'd LOVE to be a congressman or senator and personally answer a few calls from those idiots!
"Oh? You think we should send U.S. Troops to Tibet?"
"Well we can't, we're doing Haiti this week."
"We're going to air drop in 100,000 machine guns, 10 million rounds of ammo, 50,000 pounds of crack cocaine and 20,000 cases of Jim Beam whiskey and let "Nature take it's course."
"We'll "do" Tibet next month."
"How's that for foreign aid?"
Plus, we piss off China and guess what we don't get from them?
Transplant parts! Kidneys, corneas, livers, hearts all that stuff!
And they have the best transplant organs going too.
They work those prisoners *hard* so they're in great shape before they wack them! Not an ounce of fat on them! Very good product.
"Hey Hop-Sing, send over a "fresh" one!"
"And tell the guy with the rifle to settle down a bit that last liver had a bullet nick on it."

At www.savetibet.org, they have a message to the Olympic chair, which you can sign and send, if you agree that the Olympics need to keep their promise not to be complicit in China's human rights abuses.

Let the kinky constituency drive the number of messages sent, up!

It's signing a petition to the Olympic committee, not strapping on a rifle.

You don't care enough about people somewhere being shot down in the streets *today* to sign a petition that might have some influence and improve their situation?  Sorry to hear it.

...and what ever gave you the idea the Tibetans want to kill you?

Sure they do, they hate the U.S. those treacherous bastards!
That's what those on the left have been making abundantly clear for the last few years.

Uh-huh. We progressives hate the US so much that we let the Refucklinazis raid the Treasury and run the whole country into the ground. Yeah, it's our fault. We elected a Rethug Congress and an asshole who couldn't wipe his ass without the Petroleum Club of Houston to give him permission, as Presidolt. We pissed away way over a half-trillion bucks in Iraq after we forced Colin Powell to show the UN all the nuclear weapons that Saddam had hidden. Oh, and don't forget we made Gowadduh wipe out NOLa with Hurricane Katrina. We hid Bin Laden from the Smirking Chimp, too, don't forget. We hid him, hell, almost 2400 days ago. We're fuckin' good, ain't we? We also made Cheney shoot his friend with a shotgun while they were "hunting" Doves that just got released from cages. Mah hero. We made Libby lie, and Gonzalez lie, and Rove lie, and Larry Craig go hunting for cock in an airport bathroom. I personally know a Progressive who put a gun to Kenneth Lay's head and made him not only steal hundreds of millions from the investors and employees of Enron, but give a chunk of that to Bush to get him elected. We made the soldiers at Abu Ghraib torture innocent people and forced Blackwater employees to rape and murder. What was that about Halliburton and sex slaves? Yep, that was us Liberals. We also recently discovered we had over 700,000 people a year arrested for a plant, most of whom were, strangely enough, African-Americans. Damn, we're "racist"!

And, lest we forget, a Progressive committed the most unforgiveable crime of all. He got a blowjob!

Hey, good fucking thing Halliburton is building all those Concentration Camps and those Freedom-loving Free-market-advocating States-rights-supporting Christian Constitution-embracing Amurkkkins are bringing us a National ID card, eh? Damn, we are so freeeeeee! Woo-hoooo!

Damn skippy.

Beijing needs to stop its campaign to eradicate the Tibetan people and the Tibetan culture.

The Olympics is meant as a celebration of human nobility and human dignity. It should not be used to give credibility to a totalitarian state bent on genocide.

Nice post CL, i can never understand how certain countries have had the Olympics or World Cup. Maybe its money, maybe its politcis but its certainly not sport.

Well reasoned posts slaveboy.
I take on trust your description of the oppression of the Tibeten people under the Dalai Lhama.

Since all the usual soft option Liberals are making "correct" noises it occurs to me that this is a way they have to express their own latent racism.
Lets teach the little yellow Chinaman a lesson and spoil his big international showpiece. he he he he he he he.

The protests were first described as peaceful  then it emerged that in fact Chinese properties were being vandalised and little yellow Chinamen/women were being attacked.

China wake up? That'll never happen, CelticLord.

My eldest nephew travelled around China for approx. five weeks some months ago and said it was one of the most xenophobic/oppressive countries he's visited, and he's one of the most open-minded globe trotters. China has a great deal more to answer to than Tibet - Tibet is a start, so duly signed.

Say in this case I lived in Tibet I would certainly think twice knowing the record of Chinese governments.
Then I would have been in appeaser in 1939. Honest pragmatism IMO.
Being "right" and then being "crushed" doesnt seem sensible to me.

With regard to Chinese xenophobia mentioned by MsM , the Japanese are apparently just as bad.
See its not only " nawty whitee " is it he he he he he he he.

Wotcha, Seeks. Xenophobia is natural to indigenous peoples where differing cultural influences are greatly limited. However, in China's case, it goes way beyond a fear of foreigners to the point of outright racism and I, for one, would like to see them sanctioned harshly. If they want to continue trading internationally they should be forced to adhere to standards set by the UN. Racism on any level is unacceptable.

You sidestep the central question in your haste to point out the log in the Liberal eye.

Many say China's policies in Tibet and with respect to the Tibetan people is wrong. Do you say otherwise?
