Some of the best I've read from Ms. West:

"Whenever I'm caught between two evils, I take the one I've never tried"

"Marriage is a great institution, but I'm not ready for an institution yet"

"Good sex is like good Bridge... If you don't have a good partner, you'd better have a good hand"

"Don't marry a man to reform him - that's what reform schools are for"

"I believe in censorship. I made a fortune out of it"

"I'll try anything once, twice if I like it, three times to make sure"

Gwyn, lovely, I've found another Sister, in the Tao of Mae!  JoyfulMistress is also wise in the ways of Mae.  (We've been busy quoting her, on the movieconversation thread.)

Hope you are well, Gwyn.

Oh my gee I LOVE Mae West. She was a size 18. =)

AND she was banned from radio (before tv, obvi) for being so raunchy. Thing is, you can watch a lot of her shows and you sit there with your jaw hanging open going 'wait, they let her SAY that??'

What I love about her is she's a bit like popeye in the way that she mutters things under her breath...the good stuff you have to listen for. She was AMAZING though. *sighs*

I happen to be reading an biography of Cary Grant. Being a big fans of his and old b/w movies in general.
During filming with her she absolutely refused to actually kiss him during filming. They actually had to film it seperately and edit it.

She kinda lost favor with me when I read that. I mean Cary Grant. Not only was he a yummy and brilliant actor, but he was openly bi-sexual and got away with it being an actor back in the day.

I wonder why she wouldn't kiss Cary Grant.  From what I read, she handpicked him, to be in the movie.  Did she write about that?  I read her autobiography a long time ago.  I should get a copy, again.

You have to give her the win, though, for pioneering in the realm of females objectifying males!  I,...I think I'm getting a little teary.

Mae West was a woman way ahead of her time. An innovator who wrote her own plays and movies!

from the book Cary Grant by Marc Elliott

" West was so dissatisfied with Grant that she refused to film her love scenes with him. Instead she had them short in single isoloated takes,so that her face and dialogue would be shot one day, and his the next. edited later on to make it seem as if they played the scene together. Grant was himiliatead and told teh studio in no uncertain terms that he would never work with West again."

It further says that their working relationship was always strained.. But at the time she was an established star while he was still relativly new to the moving up as a top actor.  From what I gather she treated he as inferior and he restented it.

Back to topic, justa little trivia since I happened to be reading this book.
