Almost everyone knows that HSV-2 can be spread through oral sex. But what happens if you kiss or share a fountain drink with someone who has recently engaged in oral sex with a person who has genital herpes? Could you catch the virus this way? I think so, considering HSV-1 is often spread by kissing or sharing drinks. I'm interested in knowing what others think.

HSV-2 is about as transmissable as HSV-1. However most people already have HSV-1 and that infection provides significant protection against HSV-2 both genitally and orally.

Are you posting this because you are really worried about your health risk, or are you posting this because of intellectual curiousity?

You have mentioned herpes several times that I have seen. I have noticed that you seem somewhat preoccupied with it. I just have to ask why that is so? Are you really afraid of drinking out of a fountain, shaking hands with people, etc? I just don't want to live my life that way and I just don't worry about this sort of stuff. I wash my hands often and let my higher power take care of the rest.

You should be more concerned with the flu, because it is more likely to kill ya.... just saying

Edited to add, very informative link Ken

I'm posting this out of intellectual curiosity and because of the social stigma associated with herpes.

I've never been afraid of drinking from a fountain.

shaking hands with people

of course not

I just don't want to live my life that way and I just don't worry about this sort of stuff.

neither do I

Agreed.

I'm just saying I think it's very probable in the hypothetical example I gave for someone to contract HSV-2 without engaging in sexual contact. Kinda makes supporters of the social stigma and the organization that labeled HSV-2 an STD look stupid.

Seriously - call Planned Parenthood and get them to send you information. It's much more reliable than asking people on a message board. Or get online and order a textbook used in a college sexuality class - you'll have to make sure it's up to date and not biased though.

Edited to add: It is very clear through your postings that STIs are something you are very concerned with. I can not urge you strongly enough to educate yourself using reliable materials, not people on a message board. Here is the website for Planned Parenthood: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/ and a textbook I found very informative and up-to-date (not quite perfect on it's stance on BDSM and other things but pretty damn good) was: Understanding Human Sexuality. I believe the latest edition is the ninth. It costs a bit, but it's definately worth it. It also contains wonderful information about sexual customs, birth control, some of the latest research on AIDs and HIV and so on.

Great advice.

Here is another good link with lots of info, including recent studies and statistics:  http://www.cdc.gov/std/Herpes/default.htm

http://www.cdc.gov/std is a good place for looking up most STD/STIs.

Also your local public health department will have the local statistics in your area of the reported rate of STD/STIs.  The largest problem with that though is many cases are not reported and many people do not always pay attention to having them.

The CDC site states that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 8 men are the stats for HSV-2.

No you get the sores in your throat but you still have contracted the genital herpes virus (HV2 or HS2). Just like a person can get gonnoreah (SP) in their throat too.  No it isn't in the genitals but they still have gonnoreah.

Just thoughts to ponder.

While I've heard of getting gonorrhea in the throat, I thought that oral herpes showed up around the lips. I've never heard of it being in the throat (but I could be wrong). I've also read that HSV-2 is generally so mild when contracted in the mouth as to be completely subclinical (i.e., there's no real way of knowing you have it unless a blood test comes up positive, no outbreaks).

I think HSV transmission from a drinking straw is highly unlikely. It's a skin infection that is passed along via skin to skin contact. If it was so easy to pass along, then everyone with HSV-1 or 2 would have outbreaks over other parts of their bodies (it can transfer to the eye, it can transfer to the fingers which is known as herpes whitlow and usually happens among healthcare providers). There would be a high incidence of herpes infections in other body parts if it was so easy to pass along.

You're more likely to catch a cold or the flu from a drinking straw than you are to catch herpes. Plus, the person would have to have HSV-2 in their mouth AND have it be active at the time of using the straw. AND the virus would have to manage to live on the straw long enough to be transmitted. HIGHLY unlikely.

i joined this site a month ago and after considerable thought, have decided to post that i have genital herpes.  i got it from my ex back in the 70s. remember free love and peace!   well mine is only on the upper part of my butt, not on my genitals... thank goodness. i do take meds for it but as we all know, there is no cure. this of course scares men away because they don't bother to read up on it. i can understand why. it is something to seriously consider before obtaining a partner in this lifestyle. but i can tell you that the men i've had sex with never got it, nor did they get it from oral sex, kissing or sharing a drink. it's just part of life!  i am very big on taking herbs for my health and there is one my doctor told me about only just recently called "L-Lysine".  she said to take it every day and that it works better than the prescription stuff and isn't as harsh on your body.

HPV or human papilomina virus has many different strains near 100 last count most don't cause problems there are a few that do. hpv simplex cold sore is one, the ones that cause warty growths can be transmitted to mucus membranes or through breaks in the skin.  for more complete and accurate information seek out your local health nurse or MD and get the info from them. theres many great resources on line as well CDC and others.

You may be confusing HPV with HSV (there is no HPV that causes cold sores; that's Herpes Simplex Virus I, or HSV-1 for the most part.)

So, I currently dont have HSV1 or HSV2.  Im a rare oddity.  My partner has oral HSV1.  Honestly?  I would really prefer to get it genitally.

HSV1 is commonly seen in the mouth, and HSV2 is commonly seen in the genitals.  However, you can get HSV1 genitally, and HSV2 orally.  In that instance, however, you see far fewer outbreaks than when the virus is in its preferred area.  So, I would much rather have genital HSV1 or oral HSV2 :-)

You can also get herpes in almost any mucus membrane, including your eyes.
