PLAY PIERCING 101: BEING SANITARY
*note - I am a body piercer who is not against non-body piercers having BDSM fun with needles (and with play piercing, I am talking about hypodermic needles) - I have seen so many message board posts with play piercing or similar questions (that worry me!), so here is ~my opinion~ of BARE MINIMUM requirements for setting up and doing a safe play piercing session. This is not going over where it is/is not safe to pierce. I also accept no liability for whatever you choose to do!
A higher-standards approach would be to start out with taking a bloodborne pathogens class before you ever pierce anyone, as well as spending more money on some equipment (because paper towels on a table is just a bit...trashy lol). But it should suffice. Feel free to add to this/ask questions/tell me I don't know what I'm doing lol...but I've been play piercing safely & without ever having a problem for a looong time...just trying to help :)
To do safe play piercing, you really need (at the bare minimum):
-a non-porous surface to set things on
-a sharps container
-*nitrile, non-powdered, medical-grade gloves*
-Technicare (surgical skin prep - kills 99.9% of bacteria with 30-second contact) (used by most piercers...not trying to sell a product here, if you find something else like it, go for it)
-corks
-surgical scissors
-a bagged garbage can to throw gloves in that will be sealed directly after play
-gauze pads
-paper towels
-a hospital-grade disinfectant
to clean up the area needles were set on/anything that gets blood on it.
*once again, this is a bare minimum standards approach*
-person doing piercings washes hands with anti-bacterial soap
-put gloves on
-use paper towels to clean non-porous area with disinfectant
- let disinfectant sit for 10 minutes (unless the bottle says differently)
-change gloves
-fold 3 sets of layered paper towels so the "clean" (underside) area is on top & set on area
-set out packaged needles on one paper towel, then the sharps container on another
-change gloves
-set out gauze on another paper towel, open needles from packages & also set on this, along with some technicare *preventing bacterial cross-contamination here by using separate paper towels & changing gloves*
-change gloves
-use gauze to scrub area to be pierced with technicare, let sit for 30 seconds, use new gauze to clean off
-throw away gauze
-change gloves
-pierce (and cork ends of needles to prevent yourself from getting stuck!) - should someone ever stick themself after the needle is through, they should immediately use the surgical scissors to cut off the tip of the needle since play piercing needles are hypodermic needles & have to be pulled back through the skin - you may have contaminated the piercee with your blood, but you don't also want to contaminate yourself! Then the person who got stuck should wash where
they got stuck with an anti-bacterial soap & keep running water over the wound for 15 minutes *then get tested if needed*
-do whatever - non-waxed floss is good for wrapping around the needles & pulling on for fun ;)
-take corks off one needle at a time & put both the cork & needle in a sharps container
-change gloves
-once again, repeat the process of cleaning the entire area that was pierced with technicare
-change gloves
-at least bag up sharps container and store away if you're going to re-use it - you can't close the lids since they don't re-open
-throw away paper towels that had things setting on them
-change gloves
-clean area items were on again with the disinfectant
-bag up garbage can & take garbage out wearing gloves
-wash hands with anti-bacterial soap
