What signs and symptoms indicate that deep bruises are in need of medical intervention rather than continued tender loving care?  All responses are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

The feeling of muscle binding and cramping. Pain when moving deep musculature or joints. Crushing of muscles and ligaments can lead to interlayer adhesions. And can even cause blood clotting at deeper levels-if veins were compressed too much.

That's when you see a doctor-and decide if the play was really worth the damage it did.

How about any swelling?  If swelling is still increasing after 24 hrs... I would think medical intervention should be in order.

hello,
I am curious about bruising in general, I tend to bruise quite easy, and they stay around for a long time, I am extremely fair skinned and the clash of colors can be very shocking,  any ideas on how to make the bruising go away more quickly ?

Arnica can help with bruising...available at health food shops and probably chemists

Disclaimer: I have used all of these remedies and found them effective in varying degrees. However, I am not a trained or licensed medical human of any variety. Evaluate and use what seems good to you within your own knowledge, comfort zone, experience, and with care to avoid any allergens or potentially interactive prescriptions or herbal supplements.

Home remedies for bruising are (realistically) almost all there are. Doctors don't have much to offer from the pharmacopia.
The first thing about bruising is that the sooner any remedy is applied, the faster the improvement and healing time.

  • Physical massage of the affected area (my sister taught her kids to "rub it out") pretty well immediately can prevent most of the color and discomfort of a bruise from even developing. Generally painful.
  • Aspirin can be useful as part of a muliti-pronged approach to the aftereffects of a scene; not only as direct mild pain relief, but by lessening blood's clotting factor (temporarily) it can help reduce any associated swelling (edema), which is another significant cause of pain. Combines well with "rub it out."
  • Warm to hot baths with a heavy lacing of epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) helps with discomfort of soft tissue injury. It will also help prevent or clear up any possible incipient infection if the skin has been abraded or otherwise opened. Also combines well with "rub it out" or aspirin.
  • Comfrey, comfrey, comfrey! A messy herb that is nature's bruise repair. If you have any growing around, or dried leaf during frost season, mash some up in a warm washcloth and apply as a poultice to the affected area. Black eyes, crushing (not tering) dog bites, crash-landed backsides from falling out of trees...I've seen every one of those reduced to nothing within hours or overnight using only this treatment. (Well, after cleaning damage and iodine or topical antibiotic on any abrasion.) I do NOT recommend comfrey for internal consumption.
CAUTION: Never use comfrey directly on a deep puncture wound until it has closed/scabbed over thoroughly without any infection. It helps repair surface tissue so fast that deep infection can become trapped, and that's just nasty to fix.
  • Like arnica, you'll probably find comfrey-based salves or ointments at your local alternative grocer (in the States: Whole Foods, Wild Oats) or health-food/herbal supplier or herbalist/apothecary. Can't name you any specific brand names because I've been making an herbal bruise/sprain healing salve (Green Comfort) for 20 years, and selling it locally in a small way for ten. I'll post a notice in the For Sale section.

Arnica's great!  I'm very fair and bruise if you look at me (good thing I'm a top/domme), and arnica is good stuff.  You can't use it on open skin, though, so I did some asking around and a friend gave me some Ten Thousand Flower Oil (aka Wan Hua oil) when I smashed up my ankle.  Smells nicer and works really well.

Thank you all for your responses.  I think they will all come in handy in the future.

My concern is that the bruises that occurred nearly a week ago are now swelling again, warm to the touch, and have become tender again.  I did not know if this is typical since I have only had experience with one bruise of this kind ever and it followed a rather typical course.

Continued thanks,
lovingpet

Sabirah, all you have to do is click on the search icon in the upper right hand corner. There, use the word Burise and you will find many threads with good suggestions from cold packs, movement, and vitamin E oils that help the healing of brusies/marks.

Having it suddenly get worse as you are describing after a week would be reason for me to seek out a doctor asap

I am an ER nurse...I see many people come in with these symptoms nearly every day. A deep hot tender and swollen area such as that may have developed a cellulitis which needs antibiotics. Another more life threatening scenario might be a DVT or deep vein thrombosis which is a blood clot from trauma or interruped blood flow.  Both are described as hot swollen and tender. Both need medical intervention. This is where prudence of well being needs to wake up and over ride depth of pain endurance.
Go to an ER we can diagnos both conditions and treat you...don't wait for an appointment.

Regarding aspirin and warm baths.

Aspirin can increase swelling because of its blood thinning qualities if used right after a scene.  Warm baths can have the same effect by widening the blood vessels.  I would wait at least 12 hours or preferably 24 hours before I would take aspirin and long warm bath.

If I'm worried about bruising and/or swelling I would use icepack on the affected area and take Ibuprofen right afther the scene.

If you find you are having bruising issues then I would suggest you get some blood tests done and ensure you are not anemic.  It is a simple test with a generally simple solution.
Many women of menstruation age are anemic and do not even realize it.

I cannot find this Arnica stuff anywhere. >.>

None of the little hippie health stores have it, and the Pharmacy looked at me like I was crazy.

I know Walgreens has Arnica even these days but then again I am in California.  Go to the section with Hispanic remedies - you can typically find it there if you can't find it other places in the store.

Also, Trader Joe's sometimes has it as well.

Best of luck. If all else fails order it offline.

Thanks to all for your input as it has all been helpful.  If anyone has any further insights, I would certainally appreciate hearing from you.  The bruises have resolved now without incident, but this will still be valuable information for future events.  Thanks again!
