But if you are in agreement that there is no blood then where is the threat? Do you think that your Dom will suddenly stab you or slice something? A prick with a knife, big deal...You could get the same sensation from a plastic fork or spork.

First, he does draw blood, but not in those areas.

A prick on the clit with the stinging sharp tip of a bowie knife in no way compares with a plastic fork!   If you aren't sure, test it on your finger tip -  it's a less sensitive area yet surely you would see the difference.

And no, he won't suddenly stab or slice my insides.  He has sliced other areas, however.

Adding to this, the depth and length of such a knife is also more intrusive than a plastic utensil.  More damage could be done if there is an error.  And nobody is perfect, of course, errors do happen.  So it requires a greater level of trust.

Some folks do knife play with the knowledge the blade is to never be utilized.

Have actually used the plastic fork before, for sensation play- surprisingly fun. Toothpicks ain't bad either, although I've only seen one used effectively once.

The fact of the matter is, you can rationally trust someone and still have a drop of respect for the weapon. In our society, many are trained to fear these weapons, irrespective of the owners. Ask someone to pick up a gun if they never have before, or touch the edge of a blade. They're hesitant to even touch it, despite the fact they know THEY aren't going to willfully hurt themselves.

It's not about the rational risk of the weapon, any more than face slapping is about cervical trauma. The effect that it has is based on the receiver.

Tangent:
Reader response theory, only with ouchy stuff instead of books.

fondue forks are also fun.

To the OP, we sterilize our knives with alcohol after each session.  We use a wide range of knives.  For cutting off clothing, we use curved blades.  The serrated one (did I spell that right?) makes a particularly hot shredding sound through most any fabric!

I am not positive which knife he used the two times he actually cut me, but it was sterilized first and he rubbed alcohol into my skin afterwards.  Ah, new pain!

He often uses a skinning knife to cut wax off my body.

Knives in general make me purr, which is fun, since I also find them terrifying.
