NajaNivea -> Collars and cuffs--what do you like to see? (3/22/2008 3:24:46 PM)

Hi folks,

I'm a leatherworker. My public shop and website are geared towards pet products, but I do a pretty significant "underground" business in custom bondage gear.
I'm curious about what everyone looks for when looking for collars, cuffs, and such. Things you wish you could find? Are there particular features you like but have ideas for improving?

Happy spanking =)

Speaking for myself, as little metal hitting the skin as possible - due to wicked metal allergies. Is why I have a sterling silver collar from my Sir.

Hey, thanks. I don't want it to seem like I'm trying to drum up business, I'd just like to know what people look for or what makes a collar special.

Longer post deleted for general silliness.  However, one thing that might be nice is the use of tooled leather.  That is, i'd like to see something like an elegant Celtic pattern stamped or burned in to the leather.  Maybe you could customize work with the dominant's chosen symbol.

I don't think I'm going to be very helpful, but I like a selection of pretty collars and cuffs to choose from. Things with studs, spikes, chains, rings, jewels... I also like when they're lined with soft material or fur, and are lockable. It also might be worth it to make matching sets (collars and cuffs) and sell them at a reasonable price.

Do you have any examples of what you've made so far?

Hey! Come back here with that general silliness [;)]
I don't do much tooling, I tend to work with overlays and handstitching to get the decorative effects I'm looking for--but customizing with symbols is definitely an option!
Good lookin' dogs you've got there!

I do, only insofar as my website: http://www.rawdogleather.com --none of the adult stuff is up there, but you can see some samples of what I can do!
I'm collecting a portfolio of "people gear" but haven't set it all up yet for public viewing.
Lockable is a feature I hadn't even considered--I don't think anyone's asked, yet, so thanks for the input!

I'll say this -- the collar with flames immediately caught my eye. The one with leaves is very cool, too. And, ohh, the black and red one with spikes and the utility-looking ring... *drools*

Ahem. What I mean to say is, I think some of your designs for dog collars could work well for human collars.

I'm glad I could help in at least a small way. :) Good luck!

As a vendor and owner of a fetish biz , what i like to see in one simple word is quality .
Beveled edges ,finished leather  work and tooling ,even placements of hardware, quality hardware used , creativity in design ,higher graded leather materials ,durability , comfort .Price point when the above are met justifies the work . I would rather buy and sell items  once for a fair price rather than buy a bargain or cheap priced over and over again .
Best of luck with your work .

Well I know I personally have a weakness for bells....other than that your work is lovely.  I rather like the pink one with the spikes.

Soft leather and it won't pinch skin as it's being tightened.

CalifChick -> RE: Collars and cuffs--what do you like to see? (3/23/2008 3:08:26 PM)

I look for stuff that doesn't look like everybody else's stuff. Anybody can throw a bunch of rivets and studs on a piece of leather; I look for nice, even stitching.  The flames and the appliqued leaves (particularly on the blue collar) are very nice and not something you see everywhere.

Something to think about is matching thigh and ankle cuffs too. Make the ankle cuffs just different enough so that the user can tell they are the ankles and not the wrists; for instance, double stitching for the ankles and single for the wrists.

Thanks for the nice words everybody, and great suggestions! Keep 'em coming!

Your stuff is lovely! But for me, smooth leather linings and beveled edges. Sharp edges and suede insides tear and blister my skin, and that's the wrong pain to pay attention to. I'd rather pay for quality than have obvious and painful marks (work) that keep my bondage time down. Even raised seams with nylon, or whatever it is, thread can drive me nuts.
I know how nitpicky this sounds, but quality is about little things.
The whole form of overlay you do is very beautiful, and for people there should be no end of amazing things possible. I'd go get some jewelry design books out of the library and cruise them, certain shapes and ides should translate well to collars. For humans the simple band can get much more shaped and complex...

DesFIP -> RE: Collars and cuffs--what do you like to see? (3/23/2008 5:36:23 PM)

Something lined so the dye doesn't come off on my skin.

I love the black one with the pink hearts on it.

Willowmoon -> RE: Collars and cuffs--what do you like to see? (3/23/2008 11:38:56 PM)

For us they have to be lined and no metal able to touch the skin otherwise I end up with a rash.
They have to be lockable.
We are always on the lookout for something a little different then just the standart plain collar or spikes/studds so pretty pictures tooled in to them are nice.

Hey, i resemble that remark! [:-]

One thing that i've seen on only a few cuffs is velcro on the overlapping section- makes the cuff easier to apply, and keeps it looking neat when in use. Otherwise, i agree with a lot of the other things mentioned- finished edges, nice lining, even stitches, good hardware. i also like unusual hardware (i like the big brass "panic" connectors on your leads), and really *heavy* gear. So, while the little pink collars are just fine for all the cute lil subby girls ([8D]), the big attack-dog collar got my attention (custom page, far left, third from bottom).

BTW, what is the item on the custom page in the center of the bottom row?

That's good to know--what about organically tanned sheepskin, or rabbit fur as linings? Please don't think anything is nitpicky--as you said, quality is in the details.

It's a martingale, sometimes called a limited-slip collar. They're for dogs like sighthounds with necks wider than their heads, who tend to be able to slip out of flat collars, or other escape artists.
I like the heavier hardware, too--the other thing with the big stuff is that it's easier to find "real" metals, like solid brass or steel, with hardware intended for livestock use. Most smaller hardware is nickel/zinc which is why it causes so many rashes, sigh.
