Hello, it seems like there are a lot of random STD's floating around out there. I don't have any reason for concern and I always play safe (latex barriers, etc), but I was thinking of just getting everything tested the next time I'm doing my annual exam. I donate blood regularly (which tests for Hep C and HIV, as far as I know)...but can you guys just start rattling off every name you can think of so I can bring in a huge list to get tested for when I go in? Last time I was in there, my gyno seemed to think I was being paranoid and in a very low risk group considering my activities and partners. I failed to mention things like being interested in poking needles into people and the like. (It just seemed like too much explanation to get into the whole BDSM thing at the time, although if she seems resistant to test me this time I'll just explain it).

Maybe I *am* paranoid, but, in my opinion, I'd rather have everything checked out every few years than just not know.

Ok, so bring on the big scary list!

Heehee, go to a planned parenthood. They will test you for everything under the sun, quite cheerfully,

People really need to stop thinking of donating blood as a means to get free medical testing, and they need to stop thinking that the testing done on donor units is 100% accurate.

They only test the units for ANTIBODIES to the diseases. Antibodies don't appear in the blood stream for at least WEEKS, if not MONTHS after contracting a disease. So, you can contract HIV and have the virus in your blood and you can donate it to someone else, but if you contracted it recently, the tests are NOT going to detect the antibodies yet and that unit of blood is going to appear safe, even though it's contaminated. That is why they ask people with high-risk lifestyles to please not donate blood. It's the only way to attempt to keep the blood supply as safe as possible.

But, back to your question.....people are routinely checked for HIV, Hepatitis A, B & C, & Syphillis through blood tests. Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are usually screened for with a swab of vaginal secretions. Trichomonas often shows up in a routine urinalysis, but they can also swab for that. I believe those are the "biggies". Gonorrhea and Trichomonas usually have pretty obvious symptoms, so the docs don't usually test for those unless a patient has symptoms (heavy, smelly discharge, a sore or "chancre" with gonorrhea....trich has a green, fishy-smelling discharge).

Thanks for the informative post, windchymes. I always ask for Gonorrhea and Trichomoniasis anyway, just in case, and for HPV, which I believe is check through swabbing.

And you beat me to it with your comment about not using blood donations to screen. That is totally irresponsible, not only as a donor (what if, just what if they don't catch it and you transfer it to someone else???) and as a patient, for reasons you mentioned, about antibodies. You may think you do not have it when really you do.

A simple blood test can test a person for Hep and HIV. Easy peasy and worth the responsible effort.

I am fortunate in my doctor is very kink friendly. She also suggested to me to be vaccinated for Hep A and B because of my involvement in the BDSM community. So I went ahead and had the series of vaccines for Hep A and B.

Double ditto to those who spoke of donating blood as a way to be tested. Nope sorry. Not only is it a false bubble of security you are living in, it is irresponsible. Also, technically after an unprotected sexual encounter or contact with blood it is recommended to be tested and then retested in 6 months in order to be fully "clear." The current tests are a lot better than they used to be so at least there is progress in that regard.

I agree with domahpet in saying that you are high risk and asking for a full panel. They don't need to know anything else. If you aren't comfy telling them stuff, don't. Also Planned Parenthood is a good place to go as well. And many times HIV tests are not covered under insurance plans so it is better to have that test run at a sexual health clinic anyway.

Oops, I forgot about HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) ! Good call!

(I think they can detect that one in the Pap smear.)

HPV is the most common STD out there. One in three people has it. It's relatively harmless (although certain strains increase the risk of cervical cancer), but counts as an STD and inflates STD numbers dramatically.

But if you're sexually active, it's never a bad idea to get tested. Also, if you're into device bondage, be sure to make sure your tetanus boosters are up to date.

There are more kinds of hepatitis besides A, B, and C............I believe it goes to F (but getting D, E, F.........would be VERY rare.

I'd worry more about tetanus from playing outdoors than on a nice clean surface. And even if you're within ten years of your last booster, you still need another one when you get a deep or dirty cut unless you had it just months ago.

Oh I didn't mean to imply I use donating blood as a test. I've always donated blood because they are always calling me and I like feeling useful. I have had blood work done in the past and do not practice unsafe sex. So my blood donor thing is because I want to donate blood, not because I'm thinking of it as a way to be tested.

I think I was just wanting a full list because it seems like there are so many out there. A few years ago I went and got a blood test (hiv, hep) with a friend as a support, only to find out I missed all the other things because they require specific tests. I'm really more concerned about the things that have no symptoms (since I have none) and can lurk around without someone knowing.

this is a wondeful way to open up to those maybe shy and do not know what to do. i had the same doc for years and i been tested for everything. i had breast cancer and anything comes up they test me i hate needle now. i have meant a wondeful man on here who is now my slave we took the time to know one another. 3 years and he was a great date flowers and all ;0s but i want he test before we go althe way in this bdrm thing wre both love . i must say i have not know of the std mention here today so i will go for the tested. i had the hiv one but no the others. i think it will be a wonderful gift to say to each other i am clean. and he truly sweet and this is why i have not been on collarme for some time training is wow .
