Butt plugs are awesome, and while starting out small is a good thing, I think in the way of plugs you want to start with something with enough substance that 1) you know it's there and 2) you're not overly paranoid about it slipping out. I'm personally the paranoid type, always afraid I'm going to lose hold of something in the heat of passion.
I'm going to assume you've at least done some anal play, so you're used to the sensation of maybe a finger or possibly even some sort of household item up your butt.
My absolute favorite butt plug ever is made by Tantus. It's called the Ryder, and is *not* overly expensive.
Silicone is really one of the best things you're going to find, especially for a butt plug. Glass can possibly chip, and isn't very flexible, if you've ever felt glass... One of the consequences of that is that you're not going to have any give to the form of your own body. Silicone is at least somewhat bendy, but not floppy. Just, more gentle. And the ryder is *not* very expensive.

To me, this butt plug is the perfect size for feeling penetrated without feeling overwhelmed. The design and shape make for good long-term wear, if that's what you're in to. I *love* this plug. I see it on Ebay all the time, but honestly I think buying it off of any website that lists it for under $30 is a decent enough deal.
