As previous posts, I have bought hardware, leather collars, etc at various stores over the years without too much attention or embarrasment.  I lived near a local hardware store where the clerks were just so helpful they would not leave you alone for a second.  I wanted to but some rubber O rings to use as, well you know, C rings.  I made up the story that I needed one for a swimming pool pump and did not know the exact size so I would just get several.

Twenty years ago, when I was first curious about bondage and I was still nervous about what it all "meant" -- I hadn't too many sources of support or information.  My girlfriend at the time was quite into it all, so when one day I spotted an army surplus store on my travels, I decided to park up and pop in for my very first pair of handcuffs.

I was in another part of London, so no-one knew me there but I found myself checking out every single item in that place except what I'd gone in for.  The shop assistant was checking me out pretty closely by now - it was obvious I was waiting for other customers to leave.  Finally, I mustered the courage to saunter up to the counter and ask for a pair of cuffs.  The guy just shrugged, handed them over and asked for his money: obviously seen it all before.  The relief was overwhelming.  I was waiting for my change and testing the strength of my new purchase with a big grin on my face when I heard a familiar voice at my elbow "Hi xxxxx! What you up to?" It was a friend from my street, who knew me and my girlfriend pretty well - he thought.

What the hell he was doing there, I never found out.  Neither of us did that great a job of hiding our surprise but to his credit, he was pretty cool about it - he never brought it up... although from time to time his girlfriend gave me a pretty knowing look.

Maybe 20 years ago, long before there was Twisted Monk or Rainbow Rope, I would buy a lot of my rope and rigging supplies at the Home Depot.   One not very busy afternoon, I'm going thru the rope aisle, measuring out lengths (HD used to have a "cut to fit" set up right at the rope spools where you could measure and cut -- they even had a quality hotknife for plastics).   And a cute little Hispanic girl in one of those orange vests comes over to see if "I'm finding everything alright".  She starts talking to me about the rope, how to cut it (she didn't know how to use the hotknife) and then says "wow, you are buying a lot of rope.  What you tying up, a boat or something?"  and without really thinking (I'm concentrating on measuring -- of course without a list -- was that two twenty foot lengths of polypro braided, or nylon??)  and I say "no -- I'm having a party and people will be tying eachother up."  And she is silent....and I look up and she's beet red and just shakes her head and walks away.

Ah, well...

I was recently looking for a climbing swivel for my suspension rig, after a few people at diffrient climbing stores asking me what I needed it for, I finally gave up and said "suspension bondage" paused a moment then turned around and walked away.

[:D]

I got the same question when I wanted my static climbing rope cut into 8 meter pieces. I gave them the same honest answer, but all the girl could say was "that's that stuff with those flesh hooks, is it?"

I buy all my stuff online, so, no uncomfortable situations with regards to buying anything.

I bought a set of handcuffs and leg irons at the local Army Navy surplus store. The very attractive young lady who rang up my purchase must have guessed that I am not the law enforcement or bounty hunter type. She smiled and said "Have a good time" as she handed the bag to me.

i couldn't stop myself from strutting around Ikea this weekend, thwapping away with a perrrfect paddle. long, thin, with silicone overlay and a double row of holes up the length of the "spatula." For $4.99! Their kitchen section is cruel and unusual.

The big plastic spoons with the slots in them are fun too-at least for me. [:D]

Haha! I used a really wide slotted spatula on someone recently from there! Those Swedes think of everything!
edit: now he wants to use it for eggs. i saw it in the pan and just sighed.

Some people are just so mundane. Don't they know when something belongs in the toybag?

midgetmafiosa -> RE: Tell us about some uncomfortable moments when paying for any of your bondage gear (4/20/2008 9:07:36 PM)

like, duh. the new spanker went straight in, and is never to be used for crepes (which i think was its intended purpose.) it's so pretty, too. stainless steel and brushed, with a dark grey silcone overlay. really looks official, you know?
edit: i also saw a hand "juicer" that looked like the most sadistic ass plug i'd ever seen. came in multiple colors, too. i probably shouldn't give people ideas.

I bought handcuffs from the mall with my girlfriend. I came back 20 minutes  later after discovering I only got one key with my cuffs instead of two. So I had her wait in the car and came back to the guy who sold them and was like, "I DIDN'T GET ANY KEYS WITH THE CUFFS. I NEED THEM QUICK!."

XD

When I went into PetSmart to get new chain collar, 18", since thats what he wears... I wasnt really thinking about the answers when the cashier was talking to me. I was holding the chain up, absently in check out, and looped it around my own neck to see if it would be long enough. She didnt seem to skip a beat with that, its a pretty common practice from what I gather. Though while she was ringing me up, she did ask about my pet.I said I didnt think Fido would fit it, but I needed it for something else. She asked if I wanted some help finding one that would fit Fido, and I said no... he's a fish.

this was my post and i think this was the best one so far   ................ he's a fish lol..............

"crafts cover a multitude of sins"

This immediately reminded me of that episode of "American Dad" where Stan tried to help his son "deal with his masturbatory impuses" with craft making. Ha ha ha ha ha!

I haven't bought gear in public like that but I've sold quite a few floggers at coffee shop meetings. There tends to be quite a bit of red faced peeking into shopping bags and trying not to look too suspicious to the bar staff who probably think we're druggies or something.

Ooh, the metal spanker! That sounds great. Shopping in the bakery isle will never be the same. I do have a rolling pin with which I threaten my 16 year old, but generally my moments all centre around saddlery. Like the time a shop guy recommended a "boy whip" for me, before we both turned bright red LOL.

uhh ok this is quite the opposite but i have to share...i was crate training a dog of mine, so when buying the crate at pets mart, my boyfriend at the time calmly without even blinking an eye smiled at the cashier and looked at me with the biggest innocent eyes ever and said "Honey are you SURE you will fit in this?"

I could have died, and the cashier looked like she was going to pass out. My boyfriend just smiled at my for once speechlessness grabbed the crate and hightailed it to the door leaving me blushing like a school girl and paying for it

This is a GREAT thread!  I love this one because it sounds exactly like something my husband would do.  He's always joking and he's so dead pan serious that people can't tell if he's joking or not.  I'm always the one busting out laughing, assuring whoever the victim is that he's only joking.

My sub was puting together a suspension setup for me.  He got all the pieces from Lowes for the bar, but needed someone to weld them all together.  He found someone in a little shop and of course once the pieces were put together, it was kind of obvious what it was.  The guy asked him what it was for.  My sub looked around and saw a little girl within earshot.  He looked the guy straight in the eyes and said "Whatever she wants, she gets" and picked it up and left.

I've also bought handcuffs at a local craft type mall.  The guy had guns, knives, etc.  I saw a pair of black handcuffs under the glass and couldn't help myself.  I find that a calm, determined attitude will sometimes help you pull it off.  I said very little as he handed them to me, explained that it was a double lock, and took the money.  I thought I was good until I got ready to leave and he turned to his friend and said "SOMEONE'S going to have fun tonight!"

All I can say is thank god for online shopping.
