Young people learn to hunt and fish from their fathers and grandfathers. Divorced men don't teach these skills. My ex fished, he never bothered to take my son. My son's been a few times with friends when their fathers let him tag along. He'd go a lot more if he had someone to take him. I can't because I don't know how.

See if there is someone near you who knows how to fish and would enjoy taking you and your son along...Learn a new trick[;)] Heck I take my godson hunting and fishing all the time.

Hunting and especially fishing is real big here in South Carolina. And they were in New Hampshire too.

My grandfather taught his children how to hunt and fish. On one occasion, my mom went squirrel hunting with him and brought the meat back home, cooked up a big pot of squirrel and dumplings. The trouble was, she used the recipe that grandma had for 10 people! So with just a few of them on that trip, they ate those squirrel for the rest of the week. I like going fishing at the local lakes in my brother's boat. Now I want to try deep sea and fly fishing.

So far, so good on the CWD. And it seems the DNR is keeping it a priority - even with the mess they are making of everything else. I know two of the local outfitters personally, and business was booming this last season. Not only deer hunting, but goose season was the best around here in years. The local paper has had a Sunday fishing report the last three weeks and the reports of good sized walleye, northern pike and muskie are all over in the area lakes - with public access, even. (http://www.prairiestateoutdoors.com/) There is a lot of strip mine ground around here. It is selling as "recreational" acreage and going for upwards of $4500/acre. 10 years ago, it was selling for $150/acre. Hunting and fishing is not on the decline in my neck of the woods.

I was with her in the woods not too long ago and witnessed her catching and killing a squirrel. I gave it to my neighbor - They look like rats with fuzzy tails to me!! No cases of the human equivalent are yet blamed on CWD and considering the miniscule numbers who got the disease from mad cow in britain I think the fear is overblown but it's a huge deal in those areas with infected animals. The affected areas are forbidding processing of venison and destroying everything but the trophy head on deer and elk. In some states the state agency responsible for issuing hunting and fishing licenses and managing the annual hunts to maintain a sustainable population of game animals. Every state has very different rules on when and how you can hunt or fish and what species and sex you can take so it is important to get educated on such matters if you intend to hunt or fish beyond drowning worms for crappy. To DesFIP, As many others have told you fathers are not the only ones who can teach one to hunt or fish. My aunt and uncle taught me to hunt and fish and you could certainly learn to hunt or fish alongside your kids.

Liscences and seasons were volentarily brought on ourselves by the hunters and anglers. Seems there was this problem with populations being so low that nobody could ever hope to hunt with success. Whitetail deer numbers were so low that in many states they were in fact non existant. Those liscensing fees served to buy back private land for the public, transfer game from states where they still had numbers to states where the numbers were low. and get the game populations to the point where they are today. where in most any state in the US you can hunt and have a reasonable chance of at least seeing game. decry the success story that is the game management of today all you want it will not change the fact that without those laws being votedinto existance you would lack the ability to hunt to feed your family anyway because there would be no game to hunt.

lofa, are you actually whining because you have tp get a license and only take a sustainable catch? Are you aware that fishing limits are per day and are set high enough that a good dedicated fisherman with a good freezer could feed a wife and a couple of kids just be catching his limit everyday? The NE website with your states limits is down so I'll use AL where I fish the most. These are per day: Black Bass (largemouth, smallthouth and other varieties) 10 Walleye 2 Sauger 10 Striped Bass and hybrids 30 Crappie 30 Bream 50 Rainbow trout 5 Alligator gar 1 Some size limits apply and all fish are limited in range. Also note that no variety of catfish is on the list and catfish harvest does not appear to be limited. I'm pretty sure you and yours would not starve on that legal harvest. With some effort you can also hunt a wide variety of game in most states most of the year. Judicious freezing would allow the real dedicated hunter/fisherman to never buy any protein at all.
