Does anyone have any home remedies, over the counter meds, etc they can reccomend for getting rid of psoriasis?

I know I can make it go away completely but I have several places on my arms that are causing me no end of self esteem issues and making me really uncomfortable and self concious!

Any help you can give me would be most appreciated. Thanks!

On skin, the best way to treat psoriasis I've found is St. Ives Medicated Apricot Scrub. It has about a 2% Salicylic acid content, which is all that doctors will prescribe. I use it in the shower (let it set for a minute), and moisturize with a tar-based moisturizer. I recommend Exorex lotion.

Both Salicylic acid and coal-tar can help reduce or eliminate minor psoriasis issues. Do I have to give the whole "This is not a substitute for medical treatment" talk? :)

Also, www.psoriasis.com is a natural products site for psoriasis that claims diet has a lot to do with managing outbreaks.

Ok, as strange as this is going to sound... Cooking lard. Yes ewww, i know. But, my brother was on medication that caused his entire body to dry up and scale. He had to take it for six months, and the doctor told him to use cooking lard on his skin. Don't use it on your face! It required alot of sheet washing, but it worked. He'd put it on, then wrap himself up in a sheet and watch TV for an hour or so. Then he'd go and take a shower and wash it off with some moisturizing body wash. Follow that with a light baby oil, get dressed and he was good to go. He did this at night cause he was embarrassed about the whole thing. But it worked for him.

If it's your scalp, use real mayonaise. Massage it into your scalp then wrap your head in a plastic grocery bag for 15-20 minutes. Wash it out with a good moisture shampoo (or even medicated like Nizoral). You won't need a conditioner, but you can if you want to. It'll make your hair really soft, and helps your scalp. Once a week was generally enough.

On your face... chap stick. Just don't get it in your eyes, and don't use the medicated kind.

I have read that rubbing banana peel on it works wonders. Probably worth a try.

Ugh.. I tried mayo in my hair once... i think it went bad while it was up there. >.< Blech

My little sister has psoriasis... apparently you can get Ammonium Lactate Cream in a lower dose than the 12% perscription strength., over the counter.

For an over the counter product, Vicks vaporub is helpful. It will sting for a minute or so if you have any open leisions with the scales but it worked well for my mother. For a prescription product, ask your physician about Schragger's compound.

Something to add, that i totally spaced out. It's called butt paste. i know you can get it at Walmart, and some other pharmacies. It was originally made for severe diaper rashes. i first got it for my kiddos when it was only available by perscription. But it's great for other things too. Works on my daughter's exema (i never remember how to spell that!), and my aunt who washes her hands many many times a day and gets skin so dry it cracks. Worth a try. *shrug*

Thank you all for your responses. Now I just have to figure out where to start. . .hopefully I have insurance soon and can see the dermatologist!
