ahem....

didn't I ask you to look away?

Oh all right...anyway...

I put in some different hoops in my...erm...nipple piercings about a month or two ago, and over the last few weeks I've had temporary pain in that area. But the pain feels very deep.

I would like to change these out, and can without pain as HoneyMaster can Lidocaine the area. But...besides that, should I soak them in salt water a few times a day, use alcohol (the high-grade kind) get a prescription for an antibiotic, or what.

I would really appreciate help from people who actually do this for a living, or who have dealt with this type of situation in the past. Thanks in advance!

I've had nothing but tons of BAD experiences....................... sorry to say it............ wanted them for YEARS............ tired them a "FEW" times for years........ and they just will NOT take!!!! =(

Makes me SOOO sad!!! Esp since I have so many other "cool" piercings........... (even some many havent heard of/had before) ;)

BUT.......... I wish you the BEST of luck!!!!!!!! I love nipple piercings!!! and so wish I couldve kept them too!!! But couldnt......... so ........ dont think I can help........ cause I tried EVERYTHING!!!

Good luck................ I hear many pple DONT have trouble.............. so .......... Hope you can enjoy them......... for YEARS to come............ =)

If I were you I'd swap the rings for bars, and make sure it's very high grade stainless steel or titanium, use saltwater (teaspoon or less in a cup of warm water) a few times a day (make sure you use separate cotton or whatever on each side and keep it all nice a clean). I would also probably stuff some loo roll down my bra to make sure it's not rubbing or catching - or go topless for a few days. And try not to fiddle.

This is a bit gross but is there any class of discharge? Any change in colour? And do they smell normal? In my experience a piercing in trouble smells like the crud that forms in your belly button while camping.

I only have one done... went from a bar to a ring and it just wasn't happy til I changed it back.

If there's nowt wrong with the piercing it could be something hormonal... I get that deep boob hurt when pregnant and when I first get my birth control injection, and used to with periods.

switch back to the barbells if you're able and go see your piercer. now.

i did the same thing - switched my barbells for rings - and spent a few months with the rings in and just had to remove them because one had literally migrated almost completely out. it didn't really do any damage but it's not pretty and i'll have to get them repierced and do the two year healing process all over again. if you're having any kind of deep pain, that means you're probably at a lot more risk for any kind of damage.

please go see your piercer (and perhaps also a piercing friendly health professional if your piercer is not also a registered health professional) and in the meantime, saltwater soaks/spray!

I *live* with a friendly health professional! *lol*

No discharge or smells, which is why I haven't been extremely worried. I've had them for two years with absolutely no issues up until now.

My healing process was more like a couple of months, though, rather than years.

Using a non iodized sea salt warm water solution 2x daily should help. Was the new jewelry bigger smaller or a different shape. Most importantly was the new jewelry sterilized or at least in a sealed package? Do you have equal pain on both sides, Are there crusties? yuck sorry but I gotta ask. NOOOOOOO never never use alcohol of any kind and slap the person who says yes. The important thing is if there is any kind of red line coming from the site go to the ER. That would indicate blood poisoning and if it reaches your heart yikes.

I am not a professional piercer yet what I am is a long term apprentice I assist in throwing hooks at suspensions and get to do the fun part "drain the pierced area of air" that hurts more than the hooks. Any way if you are concerned and need help I would go to the place you got it done and ask them. Feel free to email me if you don't want to describe anything in the forum.

Not sure if this will help you or not. Eight months after my nipple piercing i couldn't get one side to stop being sore. It didn't appear infected...just not right. Read on the internet that there can be microscopic flaws in the jewelry on occasion. Had a talk with my piercer and he had no idea why the one side was doing that, but decided to change out the jewelry in that side and see what happened. Within 3 days that nipple felt fine with no soreness at all. I tossed the old jewelry to make sure it would never get used again.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's the jewelry. I think it is a smaller gauge even though it was supposed to be the same size. These particular ones are bars, with like...a little horseshoe shape hanging off of it. (not really horseshoe, but that's how I would describe it.)

Peppermint, when I take these out, should I put a different pair, (which has never given me trouble before) in? Or let them be for a few days?

I will definitely use lidocaine, because this is not the 'fun' pain...

I swear by "H2Ocean". Have to buy it on eBay here in the UK, but i have had little trouble with my piercings (though they are barbells, which seems to be the consensus as the easiest at first). If i have a little discharge after rough play, or any pain at all, i spray on the H2Ocean (sea salt spray) and within a day it's gone. Sure beats laying on my back with my nipples in shot glasses too! :-)

What helped mine alot was lavender oil. Make sure it has pure essential oil in it, and you have no allergies. Its soothing to the skin and has healing and antiseptic properties. A few drops on each side worked back and forth several times a day. I went from barbells to rings, titanium etc and have no problems. I can see how a teeny flaw in the metal would hurt like hell though. Hope this helps. xox

mine were relatively fine for the almost two years i had them up until i switched jewelry, too (just took a bit longer to heal for various reasons unrelated to the piercing specifically).

i hope everything works out. the lavender thing sounds like a good idea, actually :)

I think once I change them back to the original, (which are shorter) and continue with the salt baths a few times a day, and take vitamins, they should heal fairly quickly.
(I did a lot of reading on this tonight!) *lol*

..........ick, I'd stay away from H2Ocean, it's glorified saline solution (just extremely over-priced and highly debated by piercers). Have you ever used Lidocaine before? People can have SEVERE reactions from that stuff, be careful. I think barbells are better than hoops, they don't get messed with as badly, and it's probably the metal that's causing the problem. Symptoms of irritation tend to be simple - a rash around the area mainly, maybe a little bit of puss/soreness. Symptoms of a MINOR localized infection can include the area being very red/warm or hot to the touch, tenderness/pain (like you described), greenish or yellowish puss, possibly fever/chills/swollen lymph nodes.
It's really best to be safe rather than sorry and see a doctor if you're having a deep pain - BUT a lot of doctors don't understand piercing infections, and if it is an infection, permanently taking out the jewelry tends to be a bad idea because it traps the infection in your body leaving an abscess & doesn't allow it to drain out. If it is an infection, REFUSE to take out the jewelry!
What I would suggest is to go to a tat shop & have a piercer switch out the jewelry for you to APP (Association of Proffessional Piercers) jewelry standards - which would be implant-grade 316LVM surgical stainless steel (if you want to look at the site, it's safepiercing.org).
NEVER clean a piercing with alcohol/hydrogen peroxide - they will kill bad bacteria, but also the healthy cells your body needs to heal. You also want to avoid vaseline-textured products like Neosporin - these are for scratches and such - if put on the ends of a piercing, it's going to prevent oxygen from getting to the inside to help heal it.

If you want to try to see if you can get the infection to go away without seeing a doctor (if you wouldn't consider it "severe"), you can try this (I'm referencing a paper from a board member of the APP here):
-ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to relieve swelling, pain, fever
-keep the area clean & wash it twice daily with a fragrance-free soap, rinse well, and dry with clean, disposable paper products
-apply a moist warm to hot (not scalding) compress of distilled or bottled water with a disposable, clean washcloth/paper towel/etc. until it cools off, then re-heat & re-apply. Repeat for 15-30 minutes, 4-6 times daily. This can be beneficial to relieve discomfort and encourage drainage
-*this is the ONLY instance hydrogen peroxide should ever be used on a piercing* topically apply household (3%) hydrogen peroxide twice daily, OR topical over-the-counter antibiotic cream or gel (rather than ointment - which has a vaseline texture) according to package instructions
-if symptoms of infection don't dissipate in a few days, or if they worsen, a visit to a physician is necessary. For topical treatment of localized infection, Bactroban cream or gel (prescription only) has shown to be highly effective - if a doctor isn't sure what to recomment, you can suggest this - or if you get an oral antibiotic, finish the whole prescription even if sypmtoms go away

I had to take my piercings out to get a mammogram. Took them out in morning, didn't put them back in till evening. One went in fine. The other was already starting to close up. It hurt like hell getting the jewelry back in. Next mammogram we put the jewelry back in right away with no problems.

I'm having surgery next Monday. Have bought some plastic bars to put in while i'm in hospital. I do not want to have to be repierced.....damn it.....that stuff hurts!!!

i would like to thank you all for your valuable opinions, information and experiences as i am planning on getting mine done. i have heard some very good and bad things about it. i know that with some of my other piercings when i had an issue, when the issue was an infection, it was often accompanied by discharge or redness and swelling as well as pain, but usually it is surface pain. In cases of infection, best to check with the medical professionals. In any event, i have had issues with hormones and with the jewelry itself. Sometimes it is an unexpected physical reaction to the metals or your homones to it. If there is does not appear to be signs and symptoms of infection, i would suggest trying some of the other solutions.

When I had my nips pierced I explained to the piercer I have had trouble with other piercings and the type of metal, He suggested niobium, that is what I used and I have had not problem whatsoever except when I put in nipple shields, they were silver, really kewl but with in hours my nips were tender and swollen, so back in went the niobium.

I would suggest it is the jewelry rather than the piercing, change back to what you have used that did not cause a problem, treat them as you did when you had them first pierced and they should be fine.

get good quality surgical steel

do simple warm water sea salt soaks
WASH your HANDS when ever you touch the jewelry or the area

ppl often forget to wash the hands...and, absent mindedly touch the piercing.
usually neg. issues are real basic mistakes
