Lawrence111 -> Is this a bug? (Blocked users) (10/6/2005 5:54:35 AM)

Greetings:

As I wanted to understand the newer features of "Busy" "Involved" "Thank You" and "Custom" (which I ultimately didn't get to work - anyone care to share how these features are utilized?), I chose to send a test message to myself with one or several of the above. In the process I came across what I feel may be a larger issue.

Imagine my surprise when I received the message "User has you blocked, message not sent".

I checked my block list and sure enough I had myself blocked.

Now, while I have had my moments of self-anger over stupid actions, I can assure you that I have never intentionally blocked myself.

I also saw a number of other people in my "blocked" list who I never blocked. (I do, however, recall having viewed their profiles. Additionally, I wrote to one person in that list.)

But there they were, in my blocked list, none the less.

My only excuse is ... and I can't believe that this is happening because ... I am using the "beta test" version of FireFox (1.5b) and have been for what seems like forever (back when FF 1.5 was "Alpha"). I can send my "build" if anyone is interested.

So, are there any thoughts on this behavior?

Finally, is there a section of the forums devoted to "bugs" and/or technical questions? If so, I missed it. If not, it would be good to have one (in order to review that forum before posting what could potentially be a repeat of a technical question).

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Sincerely,

Lawrence

OK. Two questions:

- Your profile says to not message you there so, should I re-send the above to a Support-link, or has my question gotten through? I'm happy to do whatever is appropriate, and will wait for an answer.

- A thought: Would not a technical support area where questions and answers could be posted for all to see cut down on the amount of work you volunteers would have to do (answering the same questions over and over, for example) ?

There is a Support link at the bottom of every page on collarme.com. You should contact support directly by using those links. The moderators and support staff are two separate entities.

As can be evidenced by the questions and topics that continue to be regurgitated in the other forums, people still ask the same questions over and over even if they have already been answered. There is work in progress on an updated FAQ that will hopefully address most of the system issues/questions we see most often.

UPDATE:

- I have written support about this.

- I have discovered that when I send a user an e-mail, they are then added to my block list, still non-consentually LOL.

-n I have not nailed down if this "adding" happens when I send the message or when the user reads the message.

Strange....

Because of your question I went to the other side. To my surprise I even have 3 blocked user's. Considering I've never blocked anyone I guess there must be some sort of a glitch going on.

Had to check...I did decline a chat invite the other day. Was curious if he was maybe on my block list now. Although he is not.

Thanks for your comment. I hope the support folks have a chance to work on this, as it sure is a pain the way it is.

Thanks again for posting,

sub4hire, I tried to send you a note but it appears to have been truncated. Do forgive my asking you this in public.

If you are still experiencing the problem, would you please drop a note to "Support" (there's a link at the bottom of every profile) so that they may gather more data?

It seems people are being added to my block list (non-consensually, that is without my approval I might add) by looking at a person's profile or sending a person collarme mail.

Odd ... but they are working on it and I think the more data they have the easier it will be for them to isolate the problem.

Many thanks,

Support is aware of your problem and is in their queue. There is no need to have others report the same problem.

Excuse me, but (1) I am aware that support is doing their best to resolve the problem (they have sent me several e-mails) (2) I was not suggesting that Support be flooded with "me too" responses and (3) as far as I know, the witer's comment was about a similar problem, not the same problem.

What I said above was :

"and I think the more data they have the easier it will be for them to isolate the problem. "

meaning ... a different User might be using a different browser, have different settings, etc., but there might be something that is the same across settings.

When I did tech support in another environment, that would be something we would look for; differences and similarities.

I have no problem with support and understand that they are working on the problem.

Sincerely,

Lawrence

I'm well aware of what you said. If support finds this is a browser problem and they need data from other users, they'll ask for it.

Lawrence remember this is a free site. The mod's work for free. They are incredibly overworked. With the new laws coming out, if they can't "keep up" collarme will be forced to shut down. So, on top of the everyday work, the added work keeps a free person all the more busier.

Anyway, I have not been able to get mail for 8-9 month's now on collarme. I know Mod One has worked on it a few times herself. I know this because I have received her mail to me. Although once she fixes the issue it is back down again.
Some things unfortunately may never be fixed. It isn't like we are paying some high price for this service. We are getting it free, so we have to deal with the bugs as they come. Hopefully recover and if we cannot, then move on from there however that may be.
Eleven know's of your issue so they are trying to work it out. Give them time. Rome wasn't built in a day.

If you can give us steps to duplicate the problem so a member of our technical team can do the exact same thing you do and have the same results every single time please send a note to myself or support with very simple steps on how to duplicate the problem. The format should be something along the lines of
Step one x
step 2 y
step 3 z
and the person appears on your block list. If you can do this and get the same results every single time you go through the same exact motions then let us know so that we can recreate the situation and do what you do and have the same results and we can fix the problem.

We are working on this issue and trying to reprduce it ourselves but assistance is always very helpful and appreciated.

Thanks,

ModOne

Lawrence111 -> RE: Is this a bug? (Blocked users) (11/3/2005 8:23:24 AM)

Responding to ModOne and sub4hire, thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

I have recently tried all of Support's suggestions from their e-mails to me and have replied to them that ... the problem appears to have gone away entirely. My sense is that they located the problem before I had a chance to respond to their requests to try Step A, Step B, Step C etc. ... either that or it was a Ghost In The Machine that decided to leave. :)

Just FYI, I originally asked if anyone had the same situation as I and suggested that they report it as well as me if they did. This didn't seem to me like pressure at all but rather a perfectly reasonable suggestion to assist the site with more data. I made my best effort to communicate this as clearly as possible. That being said, I recognize that different people can read different things into what someone else writes. Thus my motives may not have been clear, for which I apologize.

So to clarify (and then put this issue to bed) I recognize it's free here, I was never in a rush, I was attempting to be a part of the solution, and I was certainly not meaning to pressure anyone.

Thanks again to Support and all,

La

i just wanted to add i have had dealings with Support and with the Mods and have found them to be of an exremely high quality, both in resolving my problem and in turn-around time. i vividly remember my boss having to go to the head IT guy to get someone from the agency's help desk to come down and resolve a problem which prevented me from printing a legal document of extremely high importance on its due date.

Comparing the paid IT support systems i have known and the one here, the one on CM is vastly superior...and when one considers these people are volunteers it is really amazing.

Additionally, i myself have offered to help in some capacity and evidentially enough members volunteer that there has never been any need for me. That speaks very highly of the caliber of member CM attracts as well.
