yes...we broke that rule after a month. It was my idea, not his. I think the doctors tell you 6 week simply to err on the side of caution.
Congrats on the baby, btw!

Edited to add....as far as a joyful experience...moreso than ever!

My stepmother's kids are 10 months apart. They had assumed since she hadn't had her first period she would be safe. Obviously that was a mistake.

KatyLied -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 9:16:36 AM)

Women make the same mistake when they are nursing, thinking they can't get pregnant.
I think the 6 week rule is in place to make sure the cervix is completely closed and no bacteria is introduced into the uterus.  Although I'm not a professional, maybe one will weigh in with the facts.

mzbehavin -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 9:22:24 AM)

I never got to wait 6 weeks, lol. 6 weeks without sex was not a reality in my home at that time. He was gentle, 2 weeks and we were good. If there are alot of stitches, maybe longer. I'd let her make the final call on it actually. She will know her body and whats right for her. Yes, it was enjoyable.
Be prepared to get soaked, her milk will let down... smiles*

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 9:25:43 AM)

never broke the rule - that's why mine are 9yrs apart. both were near-miscarries and premature births.

CalifChick -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 10:08:08 AM)

With my first, I had natural delivery, no stitches, but her father and I had broken up halfway thru the pregnancy. So even if I wanted to, there was no one around to do it with.

With the last, I broke the rule, it was my idea, he didn't want to, was afraid of hurting me.  I got all dommely on him, told him to lay there, shut up, and tip his hips a little (and yeah, he got a milk bath).  I had that one with a c-section.  At that was ermmmmm.... ten days after delivery.

Edited cuz I forgot the "joyful experience" question.  Yes, it was for me.  I was very, very ill throughout my entire 9 months.  After delivery I felt so fantastic. If it had been a vag delivery I would have waited longer, just to give all the parts time to heal up from the drive-by whupping.

With my first, being basically alone, I was horribly exhausted, depressed, dealing with living with my mom after ten years of living on my own.  I doubt sex so soon afterwards would have been good.  So I guess my point is, the situation is so unique to each set of circumstances, even for the same person.  Sex after the first, no way; sex after the last, bring it on!

oh hell no, i had major stitches after both my kids and nobody was touching me until it was completely healed...that makes me hurt just thinking about it.

Lucylastic -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 10:22:51 AM)

had stitches with all three of mine, the last one well that was a nightmare, but still three weeks after, I couldnt wait any longer, if the stitch site hadnt been so sore it would have been sooner.
Just let her guide you to the comfort zone as it were. The first time wasnt joyful, Ithink I (and  he) was too worried to do damage, but the second time(not long after the first) was much better.

zuki -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 10:59:11 AM)

i seem to remember being advised to try before the six week check to make sure there were no problems in that department. but i am in the uk so maybe it is different in the usa.

jenara -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 11:11:57 AM)

i had an ass for an ex, he waited 10 days after the first and only 4 days after the second... (and it's not like he was on a sex diet beforehand either as i was raging horny if somewhat uncomfortable)

Don't ask why i stayed with him, i wonder myself sometimes, but it didn't last much longer after #2 - I remember it being sore but not too sore to stop (i never had stitches with either).

Congrats on your new lil'one

Aileen1968 -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 11:26:57 AM)

I had no desire to be touched for weeks and weeks after.  I had a lot of stitches from really fast labors and pushing the baby out fast....really fast.  No time to stretch so lots of stitches.  I had high risk pregnancies and wasn't allowed any sex at all throughout them so I was in a non sex mode anyway.

MamaDomme1 -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 12:50:08 PM)

With my first, as soon as the bleeding was lightened up quite a bit-- so probably 3-4 weeks........ the second was 5 weeks cause hubby was out of country until then.... the last was twins and an emergency c-section so as soon as I could be half comfortable to climb on top we were at it.  Yeah, I was a pretty horny minx myself-- still am, I think.

DomMeinCT -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 1:37:49 PM)

About 4 weeks with the first two, (but there were also no stitches involved).

When I getting ready to check out of the hospital with my first, the doctor came in to give me the 6-week speech.  The nurse who was there helping me pack said they had to warn everyone to at least wait until they'd left the hospital, as they'd recently interrupted a couple in the hospital bed who'd had a baby just two days before.

windchymes -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 2:55:07 PM)

Well, it's been over 25 years [&:]  but if I remember right, I/we wanted to, and tried it at maybe 4 weeks, and found it to be too ouchy and tender, and thought we'd better wait another week or two.

kiwisub12 -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 3:13:08 PM)

I was so blue after the birth of my  two that sex was off the table for as long as i could put it off. Of course it didn't help to have an ass as a husband. After the birth of my first child my parents came and stayed for 6 weeks. My hubby took them to the airport, came back home and basically said 'what about it?" . I promptly burst into tears and cried hysterically. I wanted my mum and dad, and i didn't want the insensitive boob at the foot of the bed!
I'm thinking if you want to approach a new mum you had better be very careful in how you phrase it.  And good luck to you.

marieToo -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 7:21:36 PM)

I had a C section, so my stitches were across the pubic area, and it kept me from having sex for at least a couple of months afterwards.

Daddysredhead -> RE: The six week rule (4/6/2008 7:29:43 PM)

I had both of mine without stitches, but my ex-husband was so freaked out about me having pushed babies out of "down there," he didn't touch me for months afterwards.  He was more like a plant, kind of asexual.  I'm actually stunned we managed to have two kids.

Best of luck, but be careful and considerate of each other.  Congrats!
