I'm in the process of buying some hemp from twisted monk, but I really want that personal connection with treating the rope myself.  Anybody have any suggestions on what oils I should use on it?  I hear potroleum jelly works well, but I want a little more style.  What about scented oils?  I'm worried about possible irritation.

Some rope guys/gals say use mink oil.  Monk says just to use the oils from your hands, running the rope through your fingers not only adds your personal oils to the rope, but lets you establish a personal connection with your rope.  It also helps the break in process.

I enjoy doing it that way, and I recommend it, it will help you find any burs or jagged fibers that didnt get removed durring the conditioning process.

Ugh. I had this nice long response typed out, and then my computer crashed.

I've heard if you use a camp stove to "burn" the rope, it's a lot easier. No exp with that though. :

As far as the sun sanitizing things, I think it may actually work pretty well. Viruses don't survive too long outside of the human body. HIV is particularly fragile, lasting only a few seconds. Hep lasts anywhere from minutes to maaaaybe 2 days, but that's stretching it I think, thats probably in a moist type of environment. The flu is something like a few seconds to a day or so, depending on the strain. Herpes is like 3 or 4 hours. I had a few more written down, but yeah, stupid computer crashed.

Also, did a little poking around online, it seems a lot of stuff is going on in using UV rays in home and hospital heating and air systems. Basically it kills alot of the crap floating around in the air. Don't see why it wouldn't work for rope.

I'm thinking while hanging your rope out on the clothesline for several hours may not sterilize your rope, you certainly aren't going to catch anything from it. Plus, it'll smell nice. I still think it'd be neat do some kind of culture test, to see if sunning it makes a significant difference or not. (Yay for lenient lab professors!)

As far as too cheap to buy my own rope, I do buy my own rope, but it's only used on me, because I'm a Pro submissive (Flamer about my untrue-submissive-skanky-professionalism go to my inbox, not this guy's thread) Sooo I drag around all my own floggers and ropes and collars and stuff.  So personally, I like the idea of sun cleaned rope, it's not like it gets stained or anything

I don't know about petroleum jelly on rope, but it is very strongly discouraged on plaited whips because it collects bits of dirt that wear out the whip from the inside.  I suspect the same might happen with rope fibers

Don't forget to use different growth mediums, not everything grows in simple agar (for example a gram negative gel like EMB, a gram positive, and a fastitious gel.... you might also try looking for some anaerobic critters) and be sure to use before/after swabs.  I'd also recommend dampening the line as it would probably get wet when touching naughty places (maybe holding it in your mouth for initial infection and then using DDDW for the second sampling).  This would draw infectious organisms from inside the fiber structure as they would be in real world practice.

Oh, and the term you are looking for "certainly aren't going to catch anything from it" is "disinfection," a lot more achievable than "sterilization"

Do NOT use vaseline, Alph...you'll have a nasty sodden mess on your hands that NO ONE wants to be tied up with.   I use natural oil from my hands, and my submissive.   If I need additional oil (a rope got "baked" at a dungeon, or something) I confess...canola oil.  Its cheap, not greasy and absorbs into hemp rope just fine.

Do not use scented oils -- the risk of allergy/irritation is great, and often commercially manufactured scented oils (such as those used in aromatherapy lamps) contain "volitizers" that make the scent jump out, or last longer, but are skin irritants.

Have fun!

Lol, probably not going to go that in depth with it, if I ever even get around to it.   This is for just for my own curiosity... I wonder if I could work this into a school project somehow.   O.o

I'm not attacking your viewpoint on anything, just throwing mine out there.

Like I said, only for my own curiosity.  I also have a pretty good idea of when things are sterile, and when things are clean enough... but then again

Pushing the thread back on topic, OP update us when you finish treating the rope, I want to see how it turns out, I've never had the space to treat my own. ^_^

If you have already given Monk a try this wont be very helpfull.  But here goes for the next time.

http://www.ricksuave.com/essentials.html

This is actual japanese hemp and will last you a long time.  Conditioning hemp is simple, run your hands through the rope everyday which will take off inperfections which will make it less scratchy this also will add your oils to the rope making it very soft over time.  There is no quick way around it.  But in a few weeks you will see a huge difference.

Good luck

My favorites are hemp & jute - and having done up a batch of our own home-treated hemp, I can say with near certainty, it will all be bought pre-treated from now on.  The house stunk from the boiling and the burning (you can do it over the gas flame on your rangetop, if you have a gas stove), and hanging the rope from the 2nd story balcony got a bit old.  Yes, there was a certain satisfaction at having done it all ourselves, but to me it was not worth the time and effort, to be blunt.

You can throw hemp in the wash, just had to do that with a several hanks that a jealous kitty damaged (grr).  It sure doesn't match the rest of the batch now, but it came out pretty decently soft.  I used Orvus paste as the detergent because it is gentler and no dyes/perfumes/brighteners/etc.

Monk's rope (http://www.twistedmonk.com/)  is really good quality, to add my vote for him.  Our next major purchase will probably be some of his Bavarian Blonde.

The jute came from http://www.makikomiropeworks.com/  but I think they are temporarily on hold due to personal matters. I hope they get back soon - want to get some more!

I am in the process of getting some new rope at the moment.

The other day i picked up some nice soft clothes line rope that I am going to dye to match our colour scheme (4 pieces 15 metres each) this rope Master is planning on using mostly for breast/face/hair bondage.

We have ordered some pretty coloured rope in a scheme that i asked them to make up and they liked it so much they have added it to their products pink, lilac and silver) from rainbow rope.

For intricate rope work we love Monks. I just wish they still had the envy green colour.

I love the scratchy feeling of new rope its adds another elements to our scenes but as the rope softens over time its nice too as the rope holds so many memories of intimate and fun times together.

Hemp or jute natural fiber rope all the way.  The rougher the better.  Love the scratchy feeling, love rope burn, love the smell.  I swear I want rope-scented aromatherapy candles for a quick fix when I can't be tied up.  I sleep with it next to me for the smell sometimes.  Not to mention that a lot of shibari techniqes are made possible by the texture of hemp/natural fiber rope.  Synthetics and soft cotton ropes don't cling to themselves the way hemp does.  In hemp you actually hardly have to really tie any knotts, you just tuck things under and they will hold extremely well because of the texture of the rope, especially if you use buttons (tying little knotts on the very ends of the rope so that you can tuck it under a loop and it stays, like a button in a button hole).

I love hemp.. but I also love Naughtycal *smiles* rope.

Damn those sailors! I use white Yale Brait from this company:  http://www.ropeinc.com/cat-premium-nylon-lines.html   The premium nylon above it is also a *very* good buy. It comes in white and black. They have other ropes as well.

When tying I like to use hemp and silk rope depending on what we are doing.  My Sir uses many kinds of rope and I enjoy the different aspects of them all.  I tend to use his rope, but am very involved in the process of selecting it.  On the bottom side there are times I just like scratchy and raw hemp or even  jute or sisal can be a turn on.  I know a few people who share this fetish.  Anyone else like this?
