if by ingestting them you mean taking them into your mouth and then swallowing them, then I would think your stomach acid would kill most of the diseases - the only problem I might see is if you have an open sore in your mouth (or perhaps even bleeding gums) and then the disease might take hold there before hitting your stomach - another thought is if you have ulcers (basically open sores in your stomach) the same problem might apply - and also if you are taking acid inhibiting medication it might cut down on the effectiveness of the stomach acid in killing any potential nasties

remember though, every time you 'deep' or 'french' kiss, you are going to be getting some of the other persons saliva and ingest it

its been a while since my EMT training, but from what I remember, saliva isnt really high on the watch list of 'things to not get on you' - unlike blood and vomitus

Apply usual caveats here

Cat Scratch Fever and PMS. [:D]

You got PMS from kissing someone? That must have been one deep kiss. I don't get PMS. I get UMS.*

Saliva and the oropharynx harbor many potential infectious agents. The mouth is actually a hotbed of potential micro trauma given the high incidence of periodontal disease, aggressive tooth brushing and flossing, and the biting of cheeks, lips and tongues. Also, if your exposure to saliva is through kissing - you're also at risk for respiratory borne infections.

Here's a quick list - by no means exhaustive, of a few diseases that can be transmitted by saliva/kissing.

1. Strep
2. Rhinovirus
3. Coronavirus
4. Tuberculosis
5. Menigococcus
6. Mono
7. The Flu
8. Rabies
9. Measles
10. Mumps
11. Varicella
12. Leprosy
13. Periodontal disease
14. Hep C - unclear- but it has been transmitted by human bites which suggests it can be transmitted by kissing, under the right conditions
15. Mycoplasm
16. RSV
17. Polio
18 HIV (rare - but a few cases have been attributed to deep kissing)

Remember - just because you CAN get one of these diseases, doesn't mean you WILL get one of these diseases. The simple act of living entails a degree of "assumed risk", and I've yet to read the recommendation to avoid kissing because of the small risk of contracting any of these illnesses.
