I have heard (don't quote me on this), that slapping with the fingers to the cheek, as your other hand is holding the other persons head, is safer. That way, you are supporting their head to avoid whiplash, and using your fingers on the cheek controls the impact. Nothings ever absolutely safe, but there are better ways to do things I suppose. I would guess that backhanding someone is a little less controlled, and more likely to hit closer to the eyes. I have also heard, that a person who has received laser eye surgery, is more prone to eye injury from an impact like this. I remember when I was in basic training, our DS saying something about certain types of laser surgery could disqualify you from joining the army, because a heavy impact could cause the lenses of your eyes to burst.... craziness. This could also be our DS's being odd again, but you never know.
