The May 2008 Issue of Readers Digest hit my mailbox today and there is an article in it I would encourage everyone to read either via buying the magazine or at their local library.

The Article is called : The Slave in the Garage  and is the story of a young Egyptian girl smuggled into the US and held as a domestic slave for 2 years before being rescued.

We who choose this alternative life make that choice with some knowledge of what we are doing (hopefully) though to be honest there are more than a few who do not make this choice for themselves. Slavery does exist in this country and around the world. No it is not legal (at least here) but that does not prevent it from happening. There is an interesting blurb attached to the story about the Modern Slave Trade with facts drawn from a book called A Crime So Monstrous, Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery (Free Press).

Thought you all would find this of some interest.

thankyou so much for this...

it's one of those things i never think anyone thinks about because they don't want to.
those of us who volenteer for it know (roughly) what we are getting but so many others are trapped in it.

Thank you. I will be sure to check that out. My mother listens to christian radio station and they have had reports on this kind of thing happening. It is real, sadly.

Forgive me if this sounds picky, but is it merely sad? I would say criminal, monstrous, and avoidable. 'Sad' makes it sound benign and pathetic.
