Wow, they keep saying "Significant Progress" but who is seeing any?

* White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan on October 27, 2003: “In the north and south [of Iraq], we have made significant progress.”

* President Bush on November 13, 2004: “Fighting together, our forces have made significant progress in the last several days.”

* President Bush on June 28, 2005: “In the past year, we have made significant progress.”

* Vice President Cheney on October 19, 2006: “[W]e’ve made significant progress.”

* President Bush on February 23, 2007: ” I think we have made significant progress in Iraq.”

They always forget the 'in' prefix? You are asking[8|]

mnottertail -> RE: INSIGNIFICANT Progress... (4/11/2008 6:27:20 PM)

Why at long last would anything the Bush administration or anyone in it espouses be thought of as significant or realistic?

Curiously,
Ron

whenever i see the word insignificant, especially all in caps, i can't help but think of the scene in boondock saints where the mafia don goes..."you insignifiCUNT little fuck"

ahem. back to your regularly scheduled post topic...i think "significant progress" is one of those vague phrases that anyone can just throw out to avoid really giving any specifics about what we've done. "significant progress" is so vague that you can't really disprove it, but there's nothing there to actually show that it exists, either. in my opinion, the phrase itself is a cop out, unless it's qualified by some serious descriptions of the particular situation. "we've made significant progress in iraq this year" or "since the beginning of the war" is so vague, it's really just meaningless, in my opinion.

TV/movies in general are less the fascinating.     All reduced to a Jerry Springer show.

books-   maybe books are good entertainment.

NorthernGent -> RE: INSIGNIFICANT Progress... (4/12/2008 7:58:55 AM)

Why would they want progress when chaos is a far better platform from which to achieve their ends?

pahunkboy -> RE: INSIGNIFICANT Progress... (4/12/2008 8:15:35 AM)

if you think about it- the war effort can never end.   ever.

too much money is being made off of it.

even if you factor our fiat money, big oil- makes $- commodity prices rise.

that doesnt count haliburton, etc.

here is a way to look at it.   my temp job per the election, being that it is good money; wouldnt I want alot of work?   they cancelled a week, suppose I was capable of fixing it so my services were needed year round?  would I ??  It is hard to know. As a human I know that while it is dull to end this run, that a new project where ever it is will open up.

but now- what if "I" am  ABC widget corporation?   That enitity soley recognizes money.  nothing else.

next thing.   in my case, I am "selling" a Ford when I prefer a Chevy.  the good thing is that i do drive...but did I sell out?   maybe.  does it put extra food on the table, yup.   having an attitude wont put extra food on the table.

I see Iraq becoming like the Phillipines.  We had a pretty long struggle with insurgents there during the early 20th Century.  But we managed to keep it until the 1940's.  Even after that, we kept military bases there until the 90's.  I'm not saying it's right, but that's what is going to happen.  I don't care what party is in office in November, we aren't leaving for a long, long time.

Floggings4You -> RE: INSIGNIFICANT Progress... (4/12/2008 12:07:39 PM)

"Significant progress"...towards what?

First, 'W' claimed that he wanted to enforce the UN sanctions against Iraq, the first time 'W' ever seemed to care about anything to do with the UN.  Then, the US asked the UN weapons inspectors to leave, 'cause they couldn't find any WMDs.  (Of course, Cheney said all along that he knew right where the WMDs were!0  Then, 'W' spent the next month telling the entire world that the US invasion of Iraq was eminent, and that our troops would locate and dismantle the Iraqi WMDs.  (This  gave Saddam plenty of time to disappear, after cashing in on the oil-for-food program.)  Then, when thousands of troops couldn't find any WMDs, either, the White House states it was always about 'Regime Change'.  But, once Saddam was captured, 'W says it was about 'brining democracy to the Iraqis'.  (Never once did anyone question that it took the US Founding Fathers--men who were all equally committed to peacfeully forming a cohesive government--a decade to hammer out our Constitution; how on earth were the Iraqis--who were not all equally commited to any such venture--going to do it during the remainder of W's Presidency?)  Now, God only knows what 'the mission' is, or what 'progress' is supposed to be made in Iraq, let alone how one could possibly figure out if such 'progress' is 'significant'...

popeye1250 -> RE: INSIGNIFICANT Progress... (4/12/2008 12:16:43 PM)

Well, the Bush admin. is going to be asking for "another" $102 B for "Iraq" here pretty soon.
I am going to call, write to, and e-mail my congressman and senator's offices and tell them ,"no more money!"
We need to get everyone to do it!
Please do likewise!
The "contractors" and lobyists are getting filthy rich from no-bid contracts over there!
Of course they want this mess to continue!

mnottertail -> RE: INSIGNIFICANT Progress... (4/12/2008 12:25:54 PM)

Oh, he aint going to get it, save your dime. Congress, while composed of stupid shitbreathers does not contain profound idiots.  Hes lame duck, it is an election year, and it will not be funded beyond what is absolutely necessary, that will be left to the policy of the new president. No majority of congress or senators (aren't they all called congress when collectively speaking of them, making my use of senators rather di minimous?) is going to stick that pole up their ass, one or two 'true believers' will bluster and pose, and go down in flames, but it wont get more than a nod on the normal media, unless Bush is going to auger mccain in even further .

Go rent the movie "Brazil".

Made in 1985 it is like watching the evening news.
(maybe a little less surreal)

I think things are going pretty good, overall, in Iraq.

Do you also think,as most neo-cons do,that the economy of doing great, oil companies aren`t gouging us,Bush is smart guy and blowing a billion a week in Iraq is no biggie?

That would explain your comment.

No, what explains my comment is that I have tried hard in my life to gain an understanding of the social and military issues that surround mankind.

I also try hard to not peg people with BS names, and fit them in neat categories that have little to do with reality, as you constantly do.

Instead of engaging me in a conversation, and getting any information about why I made the comment I did, you simply attack and insult me (or at least used terms and concepts that you think are insulting to me).  This type of behavior tends to occur in people who are narrow-minded and ideologically blind.

They aren`t making any progress is Iraq.

The "surge" hasn`t produced the factional cooperation, it was supposed to.

The only progress that`s been made is getting Bush closer to the end of his term, period.

Iraq has been nothing but a huge deadly mis-adventure.

No amount of spin or ignorance will hide that.

How`s that for engaging conversation?
