I’m not a doctor but I’m about to play one on CM...

What stuck out to me in your post was that it was your left arm that hurt. I don’t want to worry you but my understanding is that this can be a sign of heart troubles (heart attacks are often preceded by pain and/or stiffness in the left arm). If I was you I’d consider going to the doctor sooner rather than later. I certainly hope that it is not heart trouble but I felt like I should mention it.

You might also want to get a linment rub. I have something iced-heat (generic brand, icyhot type stuff) that works wonders on sore joints, tendons and overworked muscles. I have arthritis and it was recommended for mwhen my back gets bad

I agree , totally, with Emperor's advice. I am a massage therapist with many years of experience working with people with a wide spectrum of pain issues.

Traumeel, I've found, can be a very effective topical agent. It may not have, as Emeror says, any so called "active" ingredient, however, that is not how homeopathy works. However it does work,as it does in many, many cases ,and I tend to go with what works, even though I may not understand how it does so.

Finally, someone suggested using heat as well as ice. I would definitely recommend that you do not use heat on  iflamation ! Heat dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to the area of application. This is exactly what you do not want to do in the case of inflamation. The acronym for what to do for inflamation is RICE. Rest, ice, compress ( ace or other such like ), and elevation.

Oh, and by the way...whoever posted some nonsense about prescription NS not having sodium but Aleve does?  More poppycock.  Naproxen sodium always has sodium in it, regardless of source.  And yes, it can spike blood pressure in some instances.

im the nonsense poster-and rx naproxyn is just that-not naproxyn sodium. aleve is naproxyn sodium.  so i call poppycock on your poppycock.  id post a link to my rx bottle and the info on it, but i cant get it thru the holes in the puter.

My error, seeks -- I thought you were equating Naproxyn and Naproxyn sodium.  They are very similar drugs, but you are correct that Naproxyn does not have sodium salt added.  However it is not available over-the-counter, as Naproxyn Sodium is (Aleve) so people are far more likely to take the NS, not just the prescription-only "N".

This is partially true. But Heat can be helpful IF This is not an acute injury. There are 3 classifications for injury and strains . Acute, sub acute and chronic. The acute phase usually lasts around 3 days then becomes sub acute. Signs of swelling, heat and redness accompany this phase. Pain too. Do you have movement and range of motion or have you lost degrees of movement? Now, sometimes it may be difficult to ascertain what phase you are at. Whether acute, sub acute or chronic. I am betting if this has been going on for more than 2 weeks, its not acute. However you may still have some edema.

I have found that if you are concerned about heat causing more inflammation, the best treatment is alternating ice and heat. This of course would not be done during an acute phase of injury or strain but rather in the latter stages.. You have the heat to sooth and give you the blood flow, while the Ice will minimize any danger of  re-inflammation. Alternate heat, ice, heat ice. Make sure to end with ice.\

I do not agree with an earlier statement of not moving the arm. If swelling has gone down and you have motion, you should  move it with gentle stretching. To not do so, and to guard the shoulder creates a condition called Adhesive Capsulitis or Frozen Shoulder. When this happens surgery or painful Physical therapy is needed to regain lost Range of Motion.

I too am a Massage Therapist with years of experience with pain and in working in Chiropractic care, clinical and sports applications. I also teach Massage Therapy at a Vocational college.

This does not make me a doctor, so see yours.

Edited to say: If this is an injury that just occured this past weekend then yes, only ice for the first few days.

Not a correction, just an addition.

soul2share -> RE: Ouch, In pain (4/16/2008 4:46:31 AM)

I have both tennis elbow and carpal tunnel in both arms......when they flare, I take ibuprofin...it seems to work better than aleve does for me.  I tend to eat the stuff like m&m's anyway, as in 1000 mg's a pop, it works for every kind of ache or pain that pops up.  And I must have a cast iron stomach, cuz very rarely do I take it with food....slows down the relief!  But taking the larger dose once lasts me for about 10-12 hours, smaller doses, I tend to get sidetracked and forget to take more until the twinges start.  (I have the attention span God gave a 2 year old, so I get sidetracked very easily!)  Then it has to start working all over again.

Also, wearing a brace while doing the activities that make you go "OW" helps too.  I've also learned how to use my arms and wrists in different ways that make the areas hurt less.  Got that info from physical therapy.....sucked!  The only thing that really helped was cortisone shots, but I was at the point of the doc not giving me any more, and looking at a surgical option instead.  I moved, and haven't gone back to a doc for it since.....it's again getting to the point to where I may have to.  Bummer!

LikaLady -> RE: Ouch, In pain (4/16/2008 9:08:44 AM)

One thing that seems to work well for tedonitis is ice. Try taking a Dixie cup (or other small paper cup) and freeze water in it. Peel off the paper cup and roll the ice over the bothered area--this works especially well for areas like elbows and ankles. Remember to not use ice for more than 15 min at a time-you don't want to frostbite the area!

velvetears -> RE: Ouch, In pain (4/16/2008 9:39:20 AM)

i currently have a severe case of tendonitis in my right elbow and i was prescribed mobic - an anti inflammatory.  i do some self physical therapy my doctor showed me - let me try to explain it to you: take your arm, palm up and extend it in front of you. Raise the elbow up so the palm is facing your chest but, off to the side. Now keep the fingers straight while lowering them down towards the wrist as far as they will go.  Turn the entire forearm so the bent hand is facing now away from you.  Take your other hand and push down on the bent hand till you feel the tension. Slowly (with pressure still on the bend hand) push the arm straight till you feel the pull in your forarm muscle. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat ten times,  and do 3 times a day.  This apparently stretches the tendon/muscle and helps it heal.

i will also be starting PT.  You can circumvent all this by getting a cortisone injection in the elbow.  i did this several times in several places and it immediately went away..... BUT it is VERY painful.

i also tore the cartiledge in my left knee and will more than likely be having surgery soon.

Getting old is a bitch [sm=Groaner.gif]

Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

BTW - you can take tylenol as well as a NASID - vicodin and darvocet have tylenol in them so if you get prescribed a painkiller be aware of this.

MladyHathor -> RE: Ouch, In pain (4/16/2008 1:07:33 PM)

A quick update----I took the ibuprofen, worked a miracle, and I used the suggestion about the frozen water in the cup---and I have a few still in the freezer----and since then, its gone, so My thanks to everyone!  (Still going to the Dr though to make sure what it is---)
