hasn't potato bread been around for decades? i remember the lunchladies in high school (20+ years ago) used to put sweet potato and/or potato flakes in the bread rolls they made.

Everything in moderation, including moderation!

Potatoe bread is good tasting. And you can find it in Walmart and most grocery stores.

About which statement in particular?  That low-carb diets are petering out?  That the science behind them was junky?  That their promoters made irresponsible assertions about fat intake?

Most of the potato bread I am seeing in the stores contains wheat. So I wonder if the OP link was actually talking about that or some other more purely potato flour based bread. I assume the latter because potato starch flour does exist but is not the easiest stuff to find.

All fads have their day in the sun. I still think that low carb and Paleolithic diets have something to teach us.

The science behind most assertions about food are fairly sketchy and now sometimes criticized as "nutritionism." Do I have to innumerate the constantly contradictory information we receive about food? One days eggs are bad, the next they are a perfect food source. Meh...

Fat can be important if one is trying to induce ketosis. IMHO, that can be fine in the shorter term, but not healthy in the longer term. Beyond that I have nothing to add.

Popeye and orfunboi,

Check this out in the article -

"But science is moving fast. Genetically modified potatoes that resist "late blight" are being developed by German chemicals group BASF. The disease led to famine in Ireland during the 19th century and still causes about 20 percent of potato harvest losses in the world, the company says.

Scientists say farmers who use clean, virus-free seeds can boost yields by 30 percent and be cleared for export."

Churro,

Do you have a bread machine at home?

And this one is an Irish recipe, no fancy machine necessary.

All three.

1- low carbing isn't as popular as it was, that's true, but "petering out" to me, means dying out.

2- The science behind it is superb, actually. Of course, you can find studies that show it's bad, also. One has to decide which side of the fence they want to be on, and I've had nothing but benefits from it.

3- Fat, especially in the absence of carbohydrate, isn't bad for you.

As Churro said, paleo nutrition has a lot to offer, and it's how the human race ate for centuries.

From Vendavals link I read two of the things that this thread brought to my mind. That they are a good and inexpensive food that is easy to grow (not to transport tho), and that they are easy to grow because of GE.

"Potatoes are a great source of complex carbohydrates, which release their energy slowly, and -- so long as they are not smothered with butter -- have only five percent of the fat content of wheat.
They also have one-fourth of the calories of bread and, when boiled, have more protein than corn and nearly twice the calcium, according to the Potato Center. They contain vitamin C, iron, potassium and zinc."

"Genetically modified potatoes that resist "late blight" are being developed by German chemicals group BASF. "

A couple of years ago I was excited and hopeful with the fascinating information coming to light on how to use genetic modification for a wonderful food supply and for great advances in health.
I'm still very heavy on the side of testing for medical purposes, for yes.. stretching perhaps what some see as a boundary not to be crossed. I feel like if it can be achieved, that if it is for medical science then it ought to be explored.

Food though? Since I began researching the link between auto-immune diseases and chemical interference I was shocked and dismayed. Eventually frightened over what is going on. The Monsanto thread is where that can be picked up. It is worth reading, it really is. I don't know how to link threads  or I would here lol.

OK Level, we're going to have to agree to disagree, because if you truly believe that, we're never going to see this one the same way.

For one thing, it makes all the difference in the world what KIND of fat you're talking about.

Fair enough, Lam.

For what it's worth, there are a significant number of low carb advocates that agree with you, on the type, or quality, of fat in the diet.

All I did was pull the URL from the address toolbar in my web browser from the main page of the Monsanto thread. Cut and paste the URL text into the fast reply window. I don't even bother with the "link" button on the fast reply interface on CM.

It might help to use a tabbed browser like Firefox, Opera, or Internet Explorer 7. Then you can move from one tab to the next more easily. But it would also work with more than one browser window too.

Hope that helps...

You hunt down your dinner with a bow and arrows or maybe a spear if you are really tough and cook it over a campfire.

Paleolithic diet?

It's how humans ate for most of our existence.

Meat, fish, eggs, nuts, small amounts of fruit and vegetables.
