Suppose You are sessioning some one and some thing goes horribly wrong, Your partner suddenly collapsed and was unresponsive. How would You handle it? Would You know what to do?

DomDevelopment -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/9/2005 4:10:37 PM)

Are you proposing we all have basic CPR and first aid training. I think its a good idea to have CPR and a bit of basic first aid training whether its for play time or just out in the general public.

Will everyone do it? No....but its still a reasonable idea

Lordandmaster -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/9/2005 4:26:29 PM)

I assume you realize that the exact same thing could happen even if you aren't "sessioning."

Suppose you're at a restaurant and your partner starts choking on a cherry tomato. Would you know what to do?

Unconscious and nonresponse ALWAYS call for a 911 call. What follows depends on a number of circumstances like is there a pulse and is the subject breathing. CPR is not always indicated and in some cases it's positively contraindicated.

Hi,

i have to agree with DomDevelopment, it's a good idea for everyone to have basic first aid and CPR knowledge.

Another good idea that was given to me, was that if anyone was being tied up in a scene to always make safecalls and let someone else know that you are playing, even if you are playing with a partner you have known for years. The reason is that if the Dom collapses while the sub is tied up the sub could be stuck and unable to get help. If someone knows that you are playing help will come a lot sooner.

cheers
mira

** edited to add .. oops i just realised this was asked in the "Ask a Master" section, i'm not a Master so my apologies to anyone who is offended :)

Right...call 911! No CPR on someone with a pulse. Anyway, to answer the question: I am trained to know what to do but that doesn't guarantee a good result.

DomDevelopment -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/9/2005 4:38:04 PM)

I was not implying that CPR is the first response. Merely stating that knowing how to do it isnt a bad idea. Calling 911 is of course a first response.

DesertRat -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/9/2005 4:45:33 PM)

I agree. Taking a CPR course is a great idea for everyone.

The American Red Cross offers training courses at a nominal fee

JustaTop -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/9/2005 5:26:14 PM)

Treat for shock, while waiting for emergency services to arrive.. cpr only if there is no evidence of breathing or heartbeat.

RainGod -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/9/2005 5:37:48 PM)

Hey I know... Maybe we could invent and market a new BDSM collar like that LifeAlert on TV... you know.... where the sub collapses and it sends a code to an operator and they ask what's wrong.
"help... I have pushed her limits and she can't get up..."
lol...

swtnsparkling -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/9/2005 6:03:50 PM)

First, hide the gun*...

* = I mean, if there had been one. But there woudln't have been... that wouldn't be right. Besides, she never showed up that night, I don't know where she is.

edited to add disclaimer.

I'm not too worried about this. I'm certified in CPR and first aid, and we've got almost as much medical equipment in our exam room as a standard emergency room! (although most of it is antique)

IronBear -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/10/2005 8:54:59 AM)

I'm still certified as a paramedic and keep my certificates up to date annually. One of the rules in my home is that everyone living there will have or get a current First aid certificate.. and know how to deal with snake and spider bites as well burns and a myriad of home accidents.

Since you've worked in Emergency Response, I have a rather poinant question:

How often did you go on a call where BDSM play had been involved? I can see possibly some instances where Breath play might have gotten out of control, but can you, or someone else give Me a hint as to how a Dom could go too far to the point of His submissive actually needing 911? I am having trouble understadning that. I thought the most important part of "play" was knowing your partner and being able to gauge her abilities and limitations....?

Am I wrong?

krikket -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/10/2005 1:59:08 PM)

One of my early questions after a relationship has moved from the meet to scene stage is "Where will the First Aid kit be?" Now, that won't help if something goes horribly wrong, but I think it makes people aware that the possibility is always there. If it's beyond that, 911 is always best. I doubt there's much the parametics/emt's haven't seen over the years. I also ask about medical conditions if my partner doesn't bring it up first.

just my 2 cents

SimplySubmissive -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/10/2005 2:55:41 PM)

A person can have a heart attack with no piror symptoms, and women especially ignore these symptoms.. there are many ways a person could get into trouble and it wouldn't be the fault of the Dom. That's why safety is so important.. have your scissors, etc, for quick release, have a phone handy, have all that stuff all the time, not just when scening...

but what if.... the sub is tied up.. can't get out... and The Dom collapses? Sudden heart attack, stroke, whatever...

I've always wondered about that. It wouldn't be pleasant. I see lots of time going by before someone would show up to help.. could be days even!

I knew a paramedic, a Domme, who treated a sub with marks after a car accident.. she just whispered to her not to worry, and handeled the situation. the sub was at the point of panic because she was afraid someone would see them and think she was abused..

Lordandmaster -> RE: Would You know what to do (10/10/2005 3:00:29 PM)

This is what I was trying to convey at the beginning of the thread. All this emphasis on "knowing what to do" seems misplaced to me. Not very many people "know what to do" if their partner suddenly collapses and starts spasming. That can happen anywhere.

A lot of times they will do groups for free. It's just how you approach them in the first place. A decent CPR class can only take 8 hours out of your day. You're certified.
Basic first aid should take about 6 weeks but I know there are shorter classes out there.

If going to do that, I'd recommend taking an EMT class. You don't learn much more than a basic first aid class but...it doesn't hurt to know a bit more.
