does the removal of moles hurt? if so, what does it feel like? is it true that getting a deep cut or scratch on a mole is bad for your health? just wondering?

camille65 -> RE: moles (4/15/2008 11:53:58 PM)

I've had moles removed and none of them hurt whatsoever. For me the doctor 'froze' the site then removed it with a sharp implement.
As to scratching one I don't know, sorry. Have you tried looking that up on like the American Dermatological Society? Okay I made that name up but you know what I mean. Hopefully!

James had a mole that his dog accidently ripped off an it grew back rounder more prounounced when it was pretty flat before and it looks scaley white now for lack of better word, so I do know you can injure if you will moles. Don't know if it is bad for your health or not though.

camille65 -> RE: moles (4/16/2008 2:26:30 AM)

Any time a mole changes shape or color you should really go see a dermatologist. It could be a blatent sign of skin cancer being ignored, or it could be nothing. But it isn't worth the risk IMO to just leave it.

camille Daddy doesn't have health insurance so  he can't afford regular dr's he'll have to go into a free walk in clinic if he wants dr care. will they look at the mole?

Why don't you call and ask?
If that particular clinic doesn't have the means, then I'm sure they can recommend another one or a doctor that accepts a sliding scale payment.
It was about fifty dollars when I got mine removed.

windchymes -> RE: moles (4/16/2008 2:24:39 PM)

Since a pre-cancerous mole could be a life-threatening condition, I don't see why a free clinic wouldn't look at it and make recommendations from there.  Not to be morbid but....funerals cost money, too.  Better to get it checked.

There was an article by Jay Wiseman on the potential dangers on impact play and melanoma cells breaking off...but I am unable to find a working link.

Everyone who has moles should get theirs checked out once a year...as a general recommendation.

TwistedLeather -> RE: moles (4/17/2008 3:06:40 PM)

i've had them removed, a few times. Only one was serious and surgically removed because they suspected skin cancer. Left a scar on my upper shoulder that i don't give much notice to anymore, but was very sore for about a week. The others were removed in the doctors office by a sharp razor that was similar to being stung by a bee. Doesn't last long really, if it's done quickly. Then they were cautorized and he placed a bandage of them for a day. No big deal.

As for the one that grew back more pronounced... are you sure it was a mole? Could it have been a wart? my grandfather had that happen on his farm. It was small and not really a problem, then he snagged it on a tractor. It grew back much larger and bothered him until yet again he snagged it doing something else, and that time it was pulled out from the roots. Never grew back. Best to talk to a doctor, but something to consider.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: moles (4/17/2008 3:15:25 PM)

When checking your moles you need to watch out for changes. You remember by watching for ABC.
A- Asymetry. Watch out for changes in asymetry. Have there been changes in the balance in the look of the mole.
B- Border. Watch for changes in the borders ofthe mole and any changes to that
C- Color. Has the color changed recently?

These are the signs of a malignant melanoma. Also a lipoma(fatty cyst) is squishy. A malignancy feels like a hard pebble.

also...
Diameter- larger than the eraser at the end of a pencil.
Evolving

I just wanted this bit to scroll, in hopes that it squicked someone else out. Oooooh the mental image with 'pulled out from the roots'  honest to god made me shudder. I had no idea I was that squeamish. Now the words keep running through my head 'pulled out from the roooooooots' and an image of maybe a carrot? With long tater type roots? But flesh colored.

Malignant tumors are hard and pebble like in feeling. So if you feel a hard pebble like spot, I would have it checked out. But if it is a spongy texture it is merely a fatty cyst or also called a lipoma. Alot  of us get them as we age. They are not a big deal. Some have them removed if they are unsightly or pressing on a nerve pathway but they are very benign.
