LadyEllen -> artists should starve......... (4/16/2008 8:12:15 AM)

Hi All

Got this on an email earlier and thought, what better place to get loads of signatures for the petition than here?
E

In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery, and starved him to death.

For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.

But this is not all... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American  decided that the 'installation' was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008.

PLEASE HELP STOP HIM.

It's free of charge, there is no need to register, and it will only take 1 minute to save the life of an innocent creature.

I got a better one, tie that fucker to a lamp post with barbed wire and let him starve to death, sicko.

If only the government hadnt locked up the ALF, eh?

We could recruit them into MI6 or some such, send 'em over, and hey presto! The dog is saved and the "artist" gets his dues.

How anyone - no matter how effete, could possibly give any credence to this guy or kudos on his "work", I dont know. What I do know, is that if tied a dog to a lamp post in the street and starved it to death, I'd be up on serious abuse charges.

What a precedent to set - "its alright officer, I kicked the guy's head open and stabbed him with this knife as an example of performance art"

Its all in Spanish, but includes (about halfway through and onwards) some pictures of the poor dog from the first round.

Note the wanker "art afficianodoes" with their backs turned to the suffering. I hope they get theirs in due course, alongside this excuse for an artist.

And yes - I see that the whole thing makes a statement on the plight of millions of humans suffering across the planet. But there was no reason to allow the dog to suffer an agonising decline to death, to make this statement. It would have been enough to portray the animal as starving to death, secretly feed the poor creature after hours (and provide it with some affection and a walk) and provide vet treatment and a good home afterwards.

*smooches E*  you big softie, you :)

LadyEllen -> RE: artists should starve......... (4/16/2008 8:50:53 AM)

Me? A softie? Not at all, my heart is blackened with every evil intent known to man, and then some.....

Which is why I'd have no qualms whatever about killing this fucker over a period of several days, by way of the most painful non lethal methods available. I'd start by putting out one eye with a spoon, then proceed to deal with fingers and toes with a bolt cropper and cauterizing gun...... get the picture?

I should probably be locked up somewhere.

It is an urban legend to an extent.  It never occured as reported.  It is a piece of art.
I am surprised people fall for giving their names and email acconts so easily.

I agree with you completely, LadyE - the concept was disgusting, but if it hadn't been 'real', there would have been no point to it (in the 'artist's' mind). In the end, it's abominable - the artist could have chained himself to a post and starved to death in front of the visitors. It would have taken longer, but how meaningful it would have been...

Really?! Well, fuck me sideways with a broomstick, I fell prey to a rumour. I'm glad it was just a rumour, however.

Well, the best art is controversial.[;)]  If it doesn't get you talking, what would point of art be - good and bad.
I am just surprised people still fall for it I guess and probably give their names and email out so easily.(Yes I know it was optional, but I bet plenty of people filled it out).

RCdc -> RE: artists should starve......... (4/16/2008 9:45:04 AM)

Well it was investigated by the humane(sp?) society and animal welfare who were privvy to the whole video footage and interviewed the people involved.  And snopes is hardly a reliable source.

Can you prove it didnt happen? Because a search for this guy's name on Google brings up pages and pages from all over the world in English, Spanish and other languages which all say the same things - its one hell of a hoax if its untrue. Meanwhile, all evidence points towards the event having taken place, as described.

And yes, Snopes isnt the be all and end all, but if they could disprove the claim, dont you think they would? Its what they do.

And where is the "artist" in all this? His reported commentary provides diverse excuses for his behaviour. All he has to do is present the dog, alive and well, to end all of this. That he doesnt means what? He enjoys having half the world want him dead?

The original exhibition took place in a country without animal cruelty laws. So the law was not broken, and no one would have done anything about it, even if there had been any reason to give them access.

RCdc -> RE: artists should starve......... (4/16/2008 10:14:51 AM)

You can contact the Humane(sp?) Society - If I remember correctly, they are the ones who did the biggest investigation and saw the videos, including the ones of it being fed.  The Gallery it was held in uphold it was fed.  And animal welfare said there is no proof and that the facts have always been misreported.

There is no proof it DID happen either - only reports and a video that doesn't show all the footage and is cleverly edited.

And the fact is, that what is happening?  An artist and Museum gain great publicity and people are contributing to it by signing a petition and posting about it on messageboards.  Many of the original 'leaks' came from blogs and from online reporting and it grew.  How many people even know of the exhibition or heard of it before this?

I see brilliant - if controvertial - advertising.

Marc2b -> RE: artists should starve......... (4/16/2008 11:05:01 AM)

Oh dear God. I hope it is not true but if it is...
[sm=anger.gif]

I work in a building with two art galleries and several artist studios and have the privilege of knowing many fine artists (fine not just as artists but as people) and all I can say is that this man is no artist. He’s a sadistic prick masquerading as an artist. Artists create, they do not destroy.

What is really scary is that even if it is not true, it is believable because we live in a sick enough world where you know it could be true.
