I'm having somewhat of a health issue I'd like some advice on, from anyone maybe in the medical field or who have had the issue previously.

I've got an infected molar, stemming from me losing a filling some 8 months ago or so. It's pretty much evolved into a large hole in the tooth which is totally open and exposing nerve, etc. X rays did show an abcess at the tooth root, and the doc quoted me 3 thousand dolalrs to have it extracted, cleaned out, and have an implant into the bone.

What's the issue? I have no insurance. Neither medical, or dental. I'm fully aware of the dangers which come along with a nasty dental infection, and i'm worried at a persistant cough I've had over the past few months and the general lethargy I'm feeling. Trouble is - having to take care of an ailing mom allows only a part time job (for now.) WHat I need to know is this...is there anything, anything at all I can do for the pain, for the infection and possible (probable) complications until I am financially able to take care of this thing? I'm honestly tempted to buy some augmentin online at this point.

You didn't mention if your dentist gave you a scrip for antibiotics. You need them immediately! I had the same problem- my issue was that my partner died 2 days before my appointment, and I was left with $200 and a child. You can buy dental repair putty at any Walgreens to fill that hole AFTER you clean it out well with some listerine. Antibiotics can be obtained at most pet stores for use in aquariums- pennicillin, tetracycline, amoxicillin, etc. Just don't say that they're for your own use. Get that infection under control, then have the tooth pulled. Get the implant when you can afford it. You can't afford to possibly die from letting it go untreated! Good luck- been there- I feel for you!

patwi -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/16/2008 8:56:50 PM)

He did give me a script. Problem there is, the meds ran out, and the infection came back, heh. This was about 3 months ago, anyhow.

I Didn't know you could get antibiotics OTC and pet shops? technically speaking, i think that's illegal. Maybe I'll exploit that just this once until I have 3000 saved up.

Infected teeth can be fatal.  Do not fuck around with this patwi.  GO TO A FREE DENTAL CLINIC TOMORROW.   Here is a link for some in Penn (I don't know where you are located, so I couldn't be more specific.  http://www.padental.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Find_Free_Reduced_fee_Dental_Clinics1

If this doesn't work, most dental schools have a free clinic.  You can die from this.  Do not do it yourself.  Do not play games.

And in the upcoming primary vote for one of the two Democrats for God's sake so you never, ever have to post a tragedy like this again.

E.

Wow...I had no idea there were free dental clinics. Thank you so much for th elink, there's one nearby I'll have to call. I do know how serious the issue can be, I've seen it in the veterinary field. I'm going to have to break down and go to a free clinic, as bad as I feel about doing that.

Slave2Bob -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/16/2008 9:03:28 PM)

For the pain, an ER physician told me to take up tp 900 mg of aspirin. I know, I was shocked at the dosage myself, but it helped.  Letting an aspirin dissolve on it helps too. Don't use the delayed release kind- they have something in them kinda like paper. Clove oil helps, and so does soaking it in your favorite booze. Don't drink it, hold it in your cheek.I rarely drink, so that part was kinda unpleasant. You're going to be on my mind tonight. I hope it doesn't keep you awake. I feel for you!

patwi -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/16/2008 9:06:44 PM)

It's kept me awake many nights Jen. *grins* I can't chew on that side of my mouth anymoer, an donce in a whilte I forget and am rewarded with a pain like someone punched me in the jaw. I just may try that alcohol trick - and drink some of it while I'm at it. *laugh*

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/16/2008 9:13:55 PM)

Antibiotics can be obtained in pet stores for aquarium use? Do these aquarium antibiotics by chance say how many milligrams they are? Taking too low of a dose can make bacteria antibiotic resistant and then you have an even bigger problem. An overdose could cause serious problems I'm sure, maybe even death.

Stephann -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/16/2008 9:49:03 PM)

Living in Chile, I had zero access to affordable health care of any kind (I was an illegal alien.)

For tooth infections, pennicillin, tetracycline, amoxicillin all work great.  Make sure you're not allegeric to any of it though.

I see that the dentist told you it would be $3,000, but that price was also to have an implant put in. If you just have the tooth removed and get treated for the infection it shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred....if that. Get the infection treated and the tooth removed immediately and save up for the implant later.

GreedyTop -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/16/2008 10:40:25 PM)

Patwi:  Dental College

ThundersCry -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/17/2008 4:58:18 AM)

I  agree with GT....go to a local Dental College...or... the nearest mental health center.

sirsholly -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/17/2008 5:05:33 AM)

the main thing is that you get an rx for antibiotics and, probably, get it pulled. Worry about the implant when you can afford it.

BE CAREFULL WITH THE ASPIRIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i had this same situation and tryed it, and i overdosed on the aspirin.
trust me, you dont ever want to know how THAT feels.

mistoferin -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/17/2008 7:18:38 AM)

2 extra strength anacin have 1,000mg of aspirin. 900mg is not an unusually high dosage.

TwistedLeather -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/17/2008 2:54:00 PM)

Peroxide and water 50/50 mix. Swish it three times a day. Tastes aweful, will hurt, might even make you gag... but it'll help with the infection. You need anti-biotics, but this will help clean it out. And you should regularly wash your mouth out after EVERY meal until you get it medically taken care of. It's annoying, but even swishing water around your mouth after you eat aids in rinsing off your teeth. You don't want stuff to get back into it and get re-infected, again. This will prevent the infection from returning until the problem is solved.

Don't tell anyone, but I "borrowed" a dental scaler from my last place of employment and use it daily. Thanks all for the advice! And you know what? It hadn't even occured to me to just go for the extraction and forget the implant and those pesky wisdom teeth for the time being. It's a bit loose now, I can likely finish the job off myself if I can get my hands on a nice pair of extractors.

I'm kidding.

ThinkingKitten -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/17/2008 5:53:52 PM)

As other's have said: get thee to a dentish forthwith, free or otherwise. Pull the tooth asap - they'll probably pack the cavity with antibiotic wadding, and x-ray your jaw for signs of osteomyelitis. If the infection has settled in the bone then you are potentially in for a protracted fight - oral surgery with debridement of the jaw bone, and extended courses of some serious antibiotics - none of which you're gonna find in the fish care section of the pet store (one of the craziest ideas I've heard in a while, I must say.....).

There was a guy up here in Ontario who died last year from similar circumstances. He had neglected to go to a dentist because he didn't have any dental coverage. It's led to a push to add basic dental care/emergency dental care into the province's healthcare plan - although nothing has yet come from that. He left behind a wife and a couple of young UMs.

Emperor, anyway to tell me how you found free dentists for PA I live in TN and I need to find a free dentist searched the best way I knew how...care to give me a tip or two?

Owned1 -> RE: Chomp Chomp.. (4/22/2008 10:58:41 PM)

IT cannot be said enough,  Do NOT treat this yourself.  Infections from teeth can travel to your heart and leave you with permanent heart damage.  I have seen it in someone young who almost died!

You do not know the type or dose of antibiotic you need, this needs to be prescribed by a MD.  Wisdom teeth are pulled and not replace.  So are many other teeth. You do not need the implant right away.  However you do need to resolve the infection THEN have the tooth pulled.  If it is pulled with infection still there you will be in huge trouble

You have been given great advise to find a free clinic, use it.  Your life is not worth fooling around
