There is no such thing as "IDIOT PROOF"! [sm=microwave.gif]

Drunks, teen-agers, elderly drivers, angry, hungry, lonely, tired, distracted, every variety of asshole we see (or are) on the road, will be using whatever technologies successfully emerge.

Horses work well in rural or semi-rural environments. You still have to stable them, breed, raise and train them. They eat a whole lotta grains and have a by product of tons of manure, which attracts flies. And of course, the manure would have to be moved if it was near large areas of human habitation. At least the manure could be transported to a methane processing plant as another source of fuel.

That's true, Ven, and if there were, the idiots would just get even more careless. The cars will need to be highly idiot resistant. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a bad accident between a hybrid or electric car, and one with a tank of hydrogen or CNG.

Hi TheHeretic Maybe this was already pointed out but I saw a nova presentation on PBS that discussed those very points. They said that both electric and hydrogen technologies were safer to emergency responders than gas or diesel powered vehicles.
Hydrogen fuel cells will not explode but burn from its source upward. Gas on the other hand will flow along the ground and may encompass the passenger compartments.
Simple devices will drain electric charges during collision and fire.
