I have a staph infection in the form of folliculitis...and I'm taking Cephalexin 500 mg, three times a day for a week...I'm having a mild reaction to the antibiotics...low grade fever...itching all over...nausea...headaches...dizziness...basically I feel like shit. Will it go away soon or just get worse? I've just finished my 2nd day on the antibiotics.

Also, do you guys know anyways to help prevent this from getting bad again to the point that I need antibiotics? My doctor told me to go without a bra as much as possible. (I mostly get them on my chest...) and she gave me a script for phisohex cleanser to use once every three weeks. I've been getting these skin infections for years...and they have never completely gone away.

I am not a medical professional, however, I have my own experience with the medical allergies (plus I'm Dr. Mom)...

Let your dr. know of your possible reaction ASAP!!!! You are possibly allergic to the antibiotic. Bad juju.

I would also suggest doing a search on WebMD on folliculitis, to see what home remedies are available for a mild case of the folliculitis, how it is diagnosed, etc. I did a brief search but didn't delve too far, my good buddy Bud Lite would rather play some more.

What I glanced at brought to light that your doctor may want to check you out further to determine if your are diabetic, or have any other issues that would impact your body's ability to fight infection. Embrace WebMD, it is your friend.

I hope this was helpful for you, goshdarn those folliculitises sound like they HURT. Dr. Mom over and out.

I agree with Dr. Mom. Please call your doctor ASAP. Those reactions are not "norm". Also, I would suggest seeing a specialist. Dermatologist. Staph can be resistant, and, perhaps you need to be on antibiotics longer to rid your system of staph. Be very careful. There is also a new strain of Staph that is extremely difficult to cure, called MRSA. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks guys. My doctor did do another test to check if I have diabetes and I don't...she called last night. So thats good...

MRSA is not new, it's been around for over 45 years...

did you take the entire course of anti biotics in the past? i would suggest you call your doc this time because it sounds like you are allergic to them...but i remember you talking about not liking anti biotics, so if you are not taking the entire course, till the bottle/package is empty you aren't getting rid of it...and if you are taking the whole thing and it still comes back, it is most likely MRSA...and as much as it sucks, it will keep coming back until your doctors decide to put you in the hospital - and you allow them to - so you can be on IV anti biotics, because that is the only thing i have ever heard of that has gotten rid of them, it is the only thing that got rid of mine and my younger brothers, and numerous other people i have talked to...

so, call you doc, the meds should not make you more sick, it is antibiotics, not chemo-therapy, and follow their instructions, they did go to school for an awful lot longer than the people on these boards and they have access to your medical records...though they may be guessing, it's an educated guess, get your moneys worth and freaking listen to what they say...

or do what you want and suffer, no skin off my back either way...

Cephalexin 500 mg- this stuff is crap for folliculitis..., only works maybe for the first 2 or 3 rounds before the infection caused by the malformation is resistant to it.

after you detox from it try doxycycline hyclate, comes in 100mg tabs and youll see improvment within 3-4 days.
cotton bras with no underwire, going braless will only trap sweat and dirt, which will make it much much worse.

antibiotic soap, air, and sunlight. keep it dry and clean. scarring can be pretty bad.

folliculitis... chronic ingrown hairs caused by malformed hair follicles, usually the malformation is genetic and runs in families. the staph is just an extra bonus to people who dont get the proper info on how to treat it.

the weird thing is...I don't even have hairs where I get them...LOL or well I guess they're so small and stuff I don't see them or something hehe

I don't get them under my breasts much anymore...which is weird...but I've been getting them mostly on top and on the sides. Also under my arms...and on my thighs, not just the inner thighs...even on the fronts and sides of them...it's so annoying! I also get them on my back >.<

I feel better right now :) and I always finish antibiotics completely...I have been getting these boils and stuff for probably 10 years now....sometimes they get pretty bad (like 30+ at one time...) then I have to take antibiotics.

I can't help you with the reaction you are having to your medication. But for me, I have to be careful of the types of fabrics that I wear. Anything that is 100% polyester will produce the type of skin condition you have described on me. I wear cotton knits and rayons for the most part. As a person of size, my body tends to perspire on my legs, back and other places when it gets warm outside. If I wear something that doesn't allow my skin to breathe, the pores and hair follicles in those areas get blocked, become irritated and sometimes get quite painful. I am also super, super obsessive about using a loofah or nylon body buffer at least once a day in the shower to keep my pores open. If a hair should be ingrown, I will tweeze it and use an astringent such as Seabreeze or rubbing alcohol on the affected area. Also, if you tend to get many outbreaks under your breasts, where usually there is no hair, a medicated body powder may be helpful. I have found that Bond's works best for me during hot and humid weather.

thanks, hun! I'm gonna try to get more cotton clothing...generally I'm home most of the time so I just wear pjs all the time LOL I'm gonna start showering twice a day again...I do in the summer b/c I get sweaty and all. In the winter I don't really sweat much.

MRSA...Is a bitch,two Summer's ago I was placed in the hospital in isolation for 15 days..,The only meds that affected this particular strain was an old antibiotic that used to be used on TB patients ..oh not to mention surgery to remove it from my toe as it was very deep and near the bone...I was lucky that I saved my toe,A friend of our Trigger the human horse had it all over his back and took many months to get it cured..The pain in the old butt is that it can return at any time...bounty

Any time you are taking a medication and you experience rash or itching, you should immediately call your doctor to report a possible allergic reaction. Even a medication you have taken successfully in the past can give you an allergic reaction.

30 at once is wayyyyyyy to many, 10 years is wayyyyyyy too long!
its definetly time to switch antibiotics!
and definetly take purepleasure advice, only natural fibers on you skin,
even tho you cant see them, there are hairs everywhere.

YOU SHOULD GET TESTED FOR MRSA, CHANGE DRUGS, AND TRY SOME ACNE TOPICAL TREATMENTS. THEY COULD HELP ONCE YOU HAVE BEEN ON ONE MEDICATION FOR A WHILE. THE BACTERIA WILL GET RESISTANT TO THE MEDICATIONS.
AND NEXT TIME TRY AN INJECTION. THEY WORK BETTER AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE SOME THING EVERY DAY. CHECK IF IT MAY BE A COMBINATION OF STAPH AND HIVES.

if you truly do have staph, you are not on the proper medication long enough. i had staph in my right foot twice last year, as a result i lost three toes and spent the better part of 12 weeks with a picc line in my left arm that went to my heart to make sure my daily antibiotic treatments went where they needed to go without waiting around in my gut for the next bus to the infection. staph does not leave, it just goes dormant. i am on more antibiotics right now for a small infection in that same foot and hoping it will remain small and not spread to the bone like it did before, next step is loss of the foot.

get a specialist in infectious diseases. staph is nothing to play with.

this antibiotic seems to be helping...the redness around them is reducing and they are "popping" gross word....I know...but oh well.

I think 30 wasn't a very accurate number...I just counted on my left breast and there are about 20 just on there...20 really red and infected ones...there are dozens more that are just like white bumps and all...
