Prowls onto the open plain, padding softly through the long grass.
Watching the pride as it lopes easily behind its prey, biting a hind leg here, tugging at a bleeding flank there. In the stark orange sunset others, drawn by the smell of fresh blood, join the circling pride of hungry lions and the pack of snarling hyenas.
The meerkats, too small to hunt with the pack, stand erect, their sentinel heads flicking from side to side, alert; watching for XI or for Cali.
Savage teeth nip more strongly and the hunters know that before sunset one of their number will go for the throat.
The wild savannah is a pitiless place, populated by the quiet big cats, deceptively peaceful throughout the long day but merciless killers of any innocent who strays into their domain showing any sign of weakness. No place this for weak-minded animals to stray alone.
One after another, more big cats rise lazily from their rest and join the chase which has but one ruthless outcome. As the suns sinks toward the horizon there is a chill in the air.
