This is Darcy

I came across this story on the BBC news site today and it made me smile, and wish that I'd thought of this. [:D]

My paternal GF passed away 12 yrs ago. I think it would of been cool to have his coffin decorated with family pictures and pictures from his time in WW2. and of his plane, Desperate Journeys. (he was the ball turret gunner.)

Thanks Darcy - it's something I'd not seen before and simply wouldn't have thought of.

Nice idea, and the kid's rainbow one was particularly beautiful.

It seems like such a waste of space....It seems that we should all be incinerated.

I can understand that.  I definitely plan to be creamated when my time comes.  Some people are uncomfortable with that or their religion forbids it, and so if one insists on being planted in the ground when they die, why not make it a statement about who they were and what was important to them?  I think it's a really neat idea.

I have given much thought to cremation - I might still do it, but its not a very eco way to go.
I like the concept of the coffin and I can see how it works for people.

I have been thinking about this since Darcy showed it - months ago he took me to a beautiful burial ground not far from him.  Its completely beautiful and eerie.  The whole place is simply like a huge field.  If it wasn't for the odd trees with names etched into the bark and broken wooden crosses, you would never realise you were walking on graves.  People are placed their in wooden or 'cardboard' caskets and simply - rot.  Back into the earth and soil.  To me, that was far more fitting an end than any other funeral I have ever seen or attended.

But I would love to combine it with this idea.  Get all my friends to stick something on my coffin to rot, or draw and write their love on my casket to rot with my body.  I'm not into people mourning and crying when I die.  I want them to have a beer for me.

this bit is so beautiful!!!!  james and fallcon were both cremated.  i still have james' ashes, fallcon's mother laid his to rest beside his father's.  funny, they hated one another when they were living.

but i love this idea, to be buried literally in the love of your friends.

They buried a shirt-tail uncle of mine in one of these, lavishly decorated with images of the LAPD.  The damn thing even had little red/blue rotating lights at the ends.  His step-son and I had a good laugh knowing that if he'd seen a car with a paint job like that, he'd have pulled it over and busted out a tail-light before he ever started hassling the occupants.  If there is any justice, there was a cop just like him along the road to wherever he was going.
