Not sure if i worded the title correctly , at any rate i acquired some  pieces and would love to know what they are, meanings ,definitions etc . Example one piece is a circle with a maltease cross  and Celtic knotting  inside .It almost looks like a shield  with a cross upon it and knotting inside the cross ,yet all four  sides are equal. If anyone knows of a site or book  explaining such symbols please let me know . I have tried to research OL with little luck and now off to the  book store and library THANKS .

well unfortunately most libraries will not have much good references on Celtic or Viking symbols. what you might want ot do is look up celtic/viking symbols on the web.the circel with malteese cross sounds very similar to the celtic cross. i have a variation of the celtic cross as a tattoo. also what you might want to do is look up pagan/wiccan/celtic/viking symbols also another good sourse to look into is if there is a "new age" bookstore near you. barnes and noble is never really a good place for any decent pagan symbology books.

Go to the history department at your local university and ask someone if they could help you.  If it's a state university even better.  I have done that lots of times with things.  I found a black widow spider at a friend's house once, and we put in a jar and took it to the entomologist over at the university here.  He was more than thrilled and talked with us at length about the remarkable little creature.  It's what they get paid to do and you may have found something that sparks their interest.

well after 3 book stores and one trip to the library and alotta time spent online  i have yet to get the answer .The  university line is a good one thanks , the search goes on .My problem is i always keep asking WHY? and it just gets me into things like this  lol .

Maybe the problem is you are looking at it as one symbol rather than as multiple symbols

for example 4 equals sides --often refers to the elements earth, fire, air and water

         Don't you just hate it when that happens?  And you weren't even looking for wank fodder.

      Here is a simplistic, highly generalized, possible interpretation of the one you describe in the most detail.

       The cross represents the divine.  Could be the earth-air-water-fire metaphor, or the Christian version, or one of the quietly heretical artful combinations of the two that developed and lingered in Northern Europe from the time of the Christian expansion.


       Cut away the obscurities and arcanities, and knots represent bindings, plain and simple.  It could represent the binds of blood relation, marriage, practically anything a human is connected to, it could be a magical prison for whatever is tied up in the center of the knot.

       A shield is going to symbolize warfare or warriors.

       Reaching into the grab bag of choices for a specific interpretation, the knotted cross on the shield represents....  Drum roll please....  the divine immunity of the wearer from evils he commits in battle.  Of course, there are about eleventy-nine other equally possible interpretations left in the bag.

      What does it mean to you, is the only question that means anything with this stuff.

Knots can also represent crossing paths. The Maltese Cross was the Cross of the Knights of St John. The center point represents Jerusalem, with each side being a gospel, spread to the four corners of the earth. Each of the eight points on the cross also has a meaning. What you are looking it could be a Freemason symbol, or even just artistic license.
